Question for DGs

My cousin is a new DG! I was wondering if you ladies have anything that non-initiated women are not allowed to have (crest, stitch letters, etc.). I wanted to send her a little package, but don't want to send her anything she can't use yet!

CutiePie2000 08-26-2007 08:44 PM

The only thing that not-yet initiated women are not permitted to wear is:
a) the badge (i.e. sorority pin) and
b) anything with the DG crest on it

The DG Greek letters and also "Delta Gamma" written out in full is fine.

P.S. My information came to me from a National President.

DZHBrown 08-26-2007 08:54 PM

Thanks!! I appreciate it :)

AritheDG 08-27-2007 09:39 PM

As far as I know, New Members are not allowed to wear the greek letters until they are initiated.

That could be a sentiment expressed by a chapter (or chapters) and so to avoid rocking the boat, I say this:

DZHBrown, my advice would be, perhaps err on the side of caution and stick with stuff that says "Delta Gamma" in full, and stuff with anchors on it, the Hannah doll (Raggedy Ann)....etc. Once she gets initiated, you can get your cousin lots of other DG stuff, including the Greek letters!

DZHBrown 08-28-2007 02:10 AM

Thanks everyone! I'm going to the Greek store in Nashville this week. I'm excited to shop for her and I'm sending her some cream colored roses tomorrow. That is the correct flower...right? :)

VandyDG 08-28-2007 10:35 AM

Yes, cream roses!

I assume you were referring to You Greek, Me Greek on West End? Since you would be so close, I would also suggest going to The Hanger. (The shop recently relocated to Park Place Shopping Center a block or so up from You Greek, Me Greek, by Boutique Bella.) The owner makes a lot of the sorority items herself and always has really cute things!

That is not correct. New Members can - and usually do - wear the letters. Quite a few get letter jerseys for Bid Day gifts. They are given at several chapters I work with.

Latest from UGA

As a UGA alum I am totally pumped to hear the chapter pledged 42 girls - the pics are awesome - such beautiful new members! So I was just checking in to see how it was going and what the latest numbers were? Is there was anything we could do - a little something special for the girls - Aunt Hannah kind of stuff? Who could we direct our interest towards - is Blitch Ann Bird still with the chapter as an advisor?

DZHBrown 08-29-2007 10:25 AM

VandyDG - Thanks for the suggestion on The Hanger! I'm excited to check it out!! :) She got her beautiful cream roses this morning! She was definitely surprised!

TennesseeDeltaG 09-04-2007 09:47 AM

DZHBrown,

I am a Delta Gamma at the University of Tennessee and non-initiated members ARE allowed to wear our letters. As a matter of fact, on Bid Day we gave them bags with our block letters on them. I'm sure anything you get her will be fine. The only suggestion I have is to maybe wait until after she gets her big sister to start getting her things. She will get TONS of cute DG stuff!

This is kinda off topic, but since this thread is called, "Questions for DGs" I decided this would fit. So anyways, I have a friend who is a DG at UCSB and on some of her facebook pictures, it says ISVT. Recently, we had a retreat at the UCLA DG house, and I saw written on a volleyball, "ISVT CHAMPS". My questions is, what does ISVT mean? We don't use that abbreviation in our chapter, so I am kinda lost. Any help?

DZHBrown 09-05-2007 11:48 PM

I'm just going to take a wild guess (clearly I don't know for sure)...Intramural Sports Volleyball Team?

Well, Googling it brought up Inter-Sorority Volleyball Tournament, supposedly the world's largest amateur volleyball tournament.

I've heard this from a number of collegiate chapters, but it is something that EO/int'l leadership is trying to eradicate.

atomicflowers 12-06-2007 07:53 PM

Well, new member are not allowed to wear the anchor badge until they are initiated. They also aren't allowed to wear anything with the crest on it.

As for wearing letters, it depends on your chapter. I'm from the Eta chapter (University of Akron) and we were allowed to wear letters after our Big/Lil night. We we were told not to buy anything with letters on it because they wanted our "first set of letters" to come from our big. It's more special that way. =) Other chapters (I'll use the Gamma Epsilon chapter [Kent State University] because that's ~20 minutes away from Akron) aren't allowed to wear their letters until after initiation.

If you wanted to send her Delta Gamma related stuff, you could also try finding things with anchors on them or maybe send her a Hannah doll (kind of looks like a Raggedy Ann doll)

I know this is a repeat, but it is an important message:

AS DICTATED BY EO, new members can wear any DG symbols except the crest and badge.

Anything else could be considered hazing.

HAZING????????????????? Surely you jest? What on this planet of the gods could possibly be hazing about such rules?

I absolutely don't understand how a rule that says you can't wear, say, chapter letters, or even DG letters, until you're initiated could possibly be hazing.

Note, I don't say I agree with such rules. I simply don't see how they could possibly be considered hazing, even under today's overly restrictive definitions.

And I have never understood why our pledges don't take just as great pride in Pi Alpha as they do in Delta Gamma.

Tess,

I understand your perspective, and maybe I have misunderstood EO's policies, but if it is only the crest (and badge) that are restricted to initiated members, then preventing any group of chapter members from using greek letters (for example) would be hazing. Perhaps our definition of hazing sometimes eliminates harmless fun, but I think it is worth it to protect our integrity as an organization.

Angie

Actually Kent State does wear letters before initiation. Their bid day shirt has block letters on the front of it every year.

As for the letter wearing discussion. It is usually the crest that cannot be worn before initiation. I have heard also that EO is working to get everyone on the same page since it could be considered some sort of hazing.

I don't know. I just remember that one of the girls I was talking to from my chapter was talking to one of the girls from Gamma Epsilon at Fred's in Kent and the girl from Kent said that new member aren't allowed to wear letters until after initiation. But maybe she didn't really know lol.
