Princessjv's Rush Thread

Hey everyone!

School and formal recruitment starts in less than a month, so I figured I’d start my rush story now! I’m from Canada, so formal recruitment and greek life in general is pretty different from the stories I’ve been reading on here, especially the SEC recruitment stories! Last year I took classes at the university (wasn’t a fulltime student though…this year I am!) and I had friends who are part of the greek system, so I kind of know a little bit about the chapters here.

There are four panhellenic sororities on my campus, and for obvious reasons, I’m going to give them all nicknames. I’ve decided to go with Disney princesses to go with my username!

Ariel- One of my best friends is in this house, my cousin is also an alumnae of Ariel (from a different campus.) The girls that I have met are very nice and seem like a lot of fun

Belle- I have a couple friends in this house and the girls I have met are all very nice.

Cinderella- I’ve met a lot of these girls at parties and events from last year, they are very sweet and down to earth.

Sleeping Beauty- Sleeping beauty is a smaller chapter, but I've met a few girls, and they are very nice.

I've gotten a lot of great advice from reading around on this site and I'm so excited for recruitment to begin, I'm going to try going in with an open mind, but after being around for a year already it might be kind of hard.

I'll probably update more when school starts, events start happening and formal recruitment begins!

I'm looking forward to reading a Canadian rush story!

It's almost about that time! School starts this week, with recruitment just around the corner! Tomorrow I'm heading off to the clubs fair to sign up!

When does your recruitment begin?

princessjv 09-07-2007 06:19 PM

It starts next week :) I'm so excited and nervous at the same time.

MangoJuice 09-07-2007 06:21 PM

Good-luck to you! We can be nervous together!

Benzgirl 09-07-2007 06:54 PM

Good Luck. Can't wait to hear the details!

princessjv 09-10-2007 11:40 PM

So I've been the first open round!! it was SO much fun! :)
All the houses looked great and i loved the chants/singing. Here's my thoughts on the houses (not on the order I went to them.)

Ariel-I LOVED this house! the theme was super cute and totally my thing. All the girls were friendly and bubbly and you could tell they all got a long very well.

Belle- I also really LOVED this house. Their theme was the best by far and done so well! The conversations started out awkward but got a lot better and were really good

Cinderella- This house wasn't my favourite but it was still really fun. They had a theme but i'm not quite sure what it was...The conversations were a littler awkward but hopefully they are better tomorrow. I'm on the fence about this one.

Sleeping Beauty- Their theme was cute but not as well executed as was Belle and Ariel's. I had some really good conversations but I'm not sure if I can see myself there, we'll see tomorrow for the open philanthropy round.

So we don't actually start ranking until tomorrow, but here's my unnoffical ranking.

Belle
Ariel
Cinderella
Sleeping Beauty

I'll update tomorrow.

It is fun to read a Recruitment story from the other side of the border! Good luck with your Recruitment! *waves a Tinkerbelle wand* http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j7...s/d683ee63.gif

That's great! I'm glad you're enjoying Recruitment. Keep us posted.

Cute Tinkerbell, Honey. Where'd you find that?

Cute Tinkerbell, Honey. Where'd you find that?

I found that on a chapter website a long time ago, and set it aside for a rainy day! I had a better one, where Tinkerbelle actually flew over a sentence and sprinkled pixie dust, but that one doesn't work any longer. :(

princessjv 09-12-2007 12:51 AM

today was open round number two, the philanthropy party day!

SO many more potiential new members came out to this day of recruitment rather than yesterday, it was insane, my group like doubled in size!

Anddd onto what I thought of each house!

Ariel- LOVED this house. I just felt so comfortable and had awesome conversations. the way they presented their philanthropy was the best out of all the other chapters. I left the house feeling like that was it.

Belle-This house blew me away again! I had an amazing time and had really fun conversations with the girls, not just about the sorority and what i'm doing in class and it was overall a really good time. Their philanthropy idea was really cute. I definitly liked this one as much as Ariel.

Cinderella- I'm still feeling very so-so about Cinderella, I had good and bad conversations but I think if I get to talk to more members I could really click with a couple of the actives! Their theme was cute but their philanthropy wasn't executed very well.

Sleeping Beauty- I had fun visiting sleeping beauty, but it didn't completely wow me. The philanthropy idea was better than Cinderella's but still wasn't all that spectacular.

So that being said, I adore Ariel and Belle and I'd be perfectly happy in either house. I haven't completely written Cinderella off, hopefully I get to visit there tomorrow and have more conversations!
Tomorrow we go to the office and see where we got invited back and either get dropped, or drop a house!

RedFox 09-12-2007 12:29 PM

best of luck!

princessjv 09-12-2007 04:23 PM

so i got my invites back and I unfortunately got dropped by Belle.

I was really upset about it first but i'm trying too look on the positive side and hopefully my parties at Ariel, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty go well tonight! :)

Hopeful_Bubbles 09-12-2007 04:32 PM

Have a great time! :)

violetpretty 09-12-2007 06:35 PM

The bright side is that you don't dislike any of the chapters. Rejection stings, but you still have one that you love, plus two more that you're so-so about and the next round could change your mind about them! Good luck!

AOII Angel 09-12-2007 10:12 PM

Princessjv,

I am so glad you were cut by Belle early. Now, before you get mad, and think I'm wishing evil on your rush experience, listen to why! In the past, before release figures, Belle would have had the option of keeping you around all week even if they had no intention of offering you a bid. This new system forces chapters to release people they aren't really interested in pledging and allows those women sufficient time to see what the other chapters have to offer rather than spending a whole week dreaming about groups that they won't get bids from. The other groups on your campus are likely just as wonderful, and now you get the chance to focus on them without Belle getting in the way. Enjoy the rest of your week and best of luck!:D

Benzgirl 09-12-2007 10:23 PM

I'm sure you will be in love with at least 2 other houses after this round. Can't wait for the recap. Good luck!

honeychile 09-12-2007 11:00 PM

Your gracious attitude indicates one lovely princessjv to me - it only takes one, and that one will be quite the lucky sorority!

princessjv 09-13-2007 12:39 AM

Aww thanks ladies for all of your support! :)

Tonight was a lot of fun, it was theme parties! Everyone had really original, very cute themes with awesome decorations and such. My opinions about each house changed a bit, but not completely!

So the recap:

Ariel- I'm still loving this house, they had the best theme by far and their house was just amazing (I'd love to go into more detail but I can't..maybe once recruitment is over!). I had awesome conversations and it seemed like every girl new my name and girls that I had talked to the past two nights came back to talk to me again and it was sweet! (I still have yet to talk to my best friend ahah but I figure thats okay because she already knows me, its better that I meet a bunch of the other girls!) I left feeling very good about the house and the girls and the night in general.

I really, really, really hope that I get invited to this house tomorrow, I think I'll be devastated if I don't get invited back.

Cinderella- I definitly like this house a lot more than I did the first two days. Their theme was also really cute and very fitting for the chapter. I left this housing feeling good about the chapter and that I definitly like it a lot more, but at the same time it's nothing compared to how I think of Ariel.

Sleeping Beauty- I had fun at this house but at times it was a little awkward. They have alumnae helping out with rush (like I said, they are a smaller chapter) and I have great conversations with the alumnae but its hard to distinguish which members are alumnae or active and I don't know if I've spoken to a lot of active members...so I don't think I can base my decision off of the alumnae that I'm meeting. I'm still very unsure.

My unofficial ranking of the houses:
Ariel
Cinderella
Sleeping Beauty

So tomorrow morning I go to pick up my invites! If I get invited to all three sororities I have to drop one, or I could get dropped by a house and be invited to two only.

I'll update tomorrow when I find out!!

ETA: AOII Angel, I'm not sure if our school uses release figures..does everyone? Actually I have no idea at all how they do things. I was told all the chapters make a list of girls that they want to invite back and give it to the panhellenic council and they figure everything out, same for bid matching.
Not too sure though, it's very confusing.

A lot, but not all campuses are using release figures. The chapters do give their lists to Panhellenic, but they just write out the invites. The chapters may have their own projected release numbers, may use the old system or use the new release figures which are calculated to make the chapters with the highest return rates (i.e. most popular with PNMs) release more women each round.

Sounds like things are going really well. Your friend may be staying away from you at parties as to not make you feel pressured. Good luck with your invites today!

Most chapters have alumnae help out during recruitment, not just small ones. There's a lot of behind the scenes work to do including getting drinks, cleaning up food, cleaning up and setting up philanthropy activities, the list goes on. When alumnae do these mundane (but very important) tasks, it frees up actives to talk to PNMs. I highly doubt you had a conversation with an alumna. Is there something in the Green Book about alumnae recruiting PNMs?

She obviously just stated that she did have conversations with alumnae. That means she did. Let's not rain on her recruitment thread with the Green Book right now.

The only reference I can find in the GB is that initiated collegiate members, new members, and national representatives are to assist chapters with recruitment activities. There is not any statement (that I can find) that says alumnae may or may not assist chapters in the background (though we know they all do - I've been informed this is at the discretion of the college Panhellenic), not nothing is blanketly stated that alumnae may not converse.

I know that some campus Panhellenics (including my own) have a campus rule agreed upon by the chapters that if a chapter has lower numbers on the floor, they can allow collegiate members from another chapter to be on the floor recruiting. The chapter can often only have as many non-chapter members present to equal the next smallest house. Those members from another chapter must be identified as such, however, and I do not know if they participate in member selection. I would assume that alumnae would need to be identified in a similar manner.

Back the regularly scheduled thread... good luck!

I definitly don't undermine alumane for helping out, I thought it was fantastic that they were still actively involved with their chapters! However, the majority of the women I had talked to and had great conversations with had pointed out that they were alumnae now.

In any case, I got my invites back! I was invited back to all three! So I had to choose a house to drop and I ended up dropping Sleeping Beauty. I just can't see myself there like I can with Ariel and Cinderella.

I can't wait for tonight, I'm so excited but yet so nervous!!

Also, I totally forgot to add my friends to this thread cos I have a few going through with me..so I'll post what houses they are going to tonight!

M- M is attending pref parties at Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Cinderella has been her favourite since the start of the week!

N- Throughout recruitment N has been invited back to all the parties! Tonight she is going to Ariel and Belle, her two favourites.

Anndd I haven't heard from anyone else yet so when I post tonight I'll add the other girls! :)

Thanks for all the luck and support ladies!

Good luck to night to you and your friends. I am pulling for Ariel for no reason other than WAY BACK IN THE DAY my GLO did a whole Under the Sea skit thing. Totally cheesey but FANTASTIC in its cheesiness! LOL

I hope you find your castle... no matter what "princess" you choose for your sisterhood!

I interpreted her first comment to mean that she wasn't sure if the women she met were actives or alumnae. She clarified in a later post to say that she did meet alumnae.

Good luck tonight; I'm sure you will love prefs, its by far my favorite round of recruitment!

honeychile 09-13-2007 08:56 PM

You got both of your favorites!! Relax, breathe deep, and knock 'em dead at Prefs!!

Oh, and be sure to have some tissues!

AOII Angel 09-13-2007 09:03 PM

Happy birthday, honeychile! Did you get some good stuff?:)

Benzgirl 09-13-2007 09:19 PM

Best of luck to you and your friends. I can't wait to hear about it

princessjv 09-14-2007 12:18 AM

Alright! So tonight was so freakin' amazing and fun! It definitly made everything very clear :)

I started my night off with Cinderella, their house was decorated so BEAUTIFULLY! like the most amazing thing I have ever seen. However I just was not feeling it, the girls are very nice and I have the utmost respect for them and their chapter but I left feeling like I would fit better somewhere else.

Then it was off to Ariel!! Their house was really pretty and it was just FANTASTIC. I had such a great night there, my best friend got to rush me most of the night! I knew it was the place for me when I walked in and all of the girls said hello and new my name. Everyone looked so gorgeous in their pref dresses! It was really cute because they had cupcakes with everyones names written on them. Their pref ceremony was very sweet and I almost teared up a little bit. Before I left one of my favourite girls came up and gave me a hug, and so did my best friend. Also the president came up and I talked to her for a bit and she was really glad that I had come back tonight and it was just an overall amazing night. I walked out of the house knowing that this was it!

So then all of us girls headed back to fill out our pref cards. Even though I knew who I wanted to rank number one for sure I wasn't sure if I should put anyone else. There were four spots so we could rank houses even if we were cut from them. I knew it'd be wrong to put Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty because if I got a bid from them I would not accept it. As well, even though Belle had cut me I still really liked their house, so I put them down as well even though I know it would be very unlikely for me to recieve a bid.

My preference (in order of course):
Ariel
Belle

Tomorrow I go back to the Panhellenic office and to see if I got a bid..11 more hours of nerve-wracking torture left!

I'll probably update tomorrow or the next day depending on when I can get computer access! :)

petals 09-14-2007 12:51 AM

GOOD LUCK!

mystikchick 09-14-2007 02:54 AM

Ack! Good luck! Fingers crossed for you, but don't leave us hanging too long!

I am delighted you had such a good time at Pref. But, I'm confused about adding Belle. It's been a while, but I don't recall that its an option to be on the bid list from someone you had not attended at Pref.

princessjv 09-14-2007 09:21 AM

Yeah I was confused to, but they said we could rank all four of the houses, even if we were cut by them, and not to put down any houses that we would not accept a bid from. So....that was those two! ahaha

i'm heading to the office in about two hours....I'm incredibly nervous and so scared I didn't get a bid.

SWTXBelle 09-14-2007 09:23 AM

Surely they would call you if you didn't get a bid . . .??? . . . so here's hoping you have a wonderful bid just waiting for you!

I've noticed a lot of schools with smaller Greek communities do this.

Good luck princess!

princessjv 09-14-2007 11:35 AM

Well, I can say that this story has a happy ending! :)

However, I can't reveal anything until after tonight...soo you'll all have to wait! ;)
