university of tennessee recruitment

Anyone have a daughter going through rush this week at Tennessee?
I do, and I am so excited for my daughter. She is having a ball, but mom here is a nervous wreck!

TNPhiMu 08-20-2007 06:08 PM

I don't have a daughter going through, but I have a good family friend going through that I wrote a rec. for. So far, she's had nothing but great things to say and she's having a blast! (but of course is still a little nervous).

She's a legacy to one chapter, but she seems to have an open mind about everything and is focused on finding HER home (and not her friends' homes), so I'm excited for her!

Good luck to your daughter tennesseemom! Can't wait to find out how everything works out for her!

tennesseemom 08-20-2007 06:13 PM

thanks TN Phi Mu

sounds like your friends daughter has the right attitude! My daughter doesn't have any friends from her high school at UT, so I am praying she will find her "own home" also! do you know if parents usually attend Bid Day at UT? I am an Auburn sorority alum, and bid day is well attended by parents there. thanks for your help

TNPhiMu 08-20-2007 06:16 PM

I don't think that parents usually attend bid day at UT. At least not that I've heard of. There are probably some UT alums around here that may know better than I do (but I'll also do some investigative work with some friends I have that are still there for you).

Silverblue 08-20-2007 07:02 PM

UT recruitment

I'm a Pi Phi alumna from UT. Parents don't normally attend Bid Day at UT. I graduated in 1989, but that hasn't changed. If a daughter is a legacy to a chapter, sometimes her mother will attend that group's celebration off-campus, helping the other alumnae with the set-up.

You can't go wrong with any of the chapters there. I would have been happy in any of them.

DZHBrown 08-20-2007 09:14 PM

I have a cousin going through there and several of her friends. My pledge sister also has a cousin through and I have a neighbor, as well!

I do not have a daughter going through rush at UT, but many that I know and love almost as much. So far most are having a great time and haven't suffered too many blows at this stage. I am praying for a great outcome for all, something like a half a dozen or more and I'm sure I can find an extra prayer for yours as well! Good luck to all!

formerlurker 08-20-2007 10:31 PM

I have several rec girls ( abaout a dozen)going through there and the ones I have heard from so far are all having a great time so far. They all had great resumes and so did not take many cuts this round. The first big cuts will come on Wednesda(and they will be heavy), so keep all of the TN. girls in your prayers this week.
Bid day is not heavily attended by parents, but some alums with legacy daughters do attend the off campus parties. In the current Panhellenic building, there is just not space for lots of parents (there really isn't space for the girls- it is very crowded). If your daughter is a legacy and she prefs your sorority, you might contact the chapter and ask if you can surprise her by being at bid day or at their party, and get directions from them. I am sure they will be thrilled for you to be there.

Silverblue 08-20-2007 10:36 PM

Pray for cooler weather, too! It's miserable here this week.

stargrl272 08-21-2007 11:08 AM

I am a current sorority member at UT, and I know my chapter doesn't have parents at bid day unless they are alums. I just wanted to add my good luck wishes to all the girls going through recruitment at Tennessee, and yes, cooler weather would be fantastic.

No, I won't be there, but I'll be by the phone to see if a friend's granddaughter is among the Chi Omega pledge class!

TNmomof5 08-23-2007 06:02 PM

Hey Tennesseemom,

I have a daughter going through recruitment at UTK this week and she is having a blast! Well that is until she started class yesterday and was assigned tons of homework...lol. I went to UT Austin in Texas but her dad went to UT and played ball there and so therefore she just really wanted to attend UTK. I am so nervous for her as well. She hardly knows anyone there as there are so few people coming from our city to Knoxville for school. I wish your daughter all the luck in the world. My daughter said she has met some great girls and is so excited about starting her college life. I will keep my fingers crossed that your daughter gets the sorority she wants!

Quick question: I know they just went through there major cuts on Wednesday. Do they still do it the same way where they mostly know by skit round who they want? I remember we barely even got to talk to the members during the skit round so they had to already know who they wanted. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!

Silverblue 08-23-2007 06:07 PM

That's what makes formal recruitment so difficult and, frankly, superficial. You have hardly any time to talk, on either side, and really get to know each other.

By the way, it hit 101 degrees here today. I wouldn't be surprised if someone passes out. I remember how sweltering that Panhellenic Building was in late August.

Silverblue 08-23-2007 06:35 PM

Yikes! It went up another degree.

stores in knoxville that sell sorority stuff

Does anyone know of any stores in knoxville that sell "cute" sorority stuff? If you're familiar with the Auburn area, i am looking for a store like Heartstrings in Auburn, selling monogramed huggies, towels, picture frames... If you have a name and address that would be great!

carnation 08-23-2007 09:39 PM

I love Heartstrings! Is it still there?

I want to go to the Plains....:(

stargrl272 08-23-2007 10:39 PM

There's not anything in Knoxville that sells sorority stuff. The closest place is Campus Cargo in Dandridge. However, the people from the store usually set up in the bottom of the Panhellenic building on Mondays (when all the sororities meet) starting the day after Bid Day and going on for several weeks. I can give you the info for Campus Cargo if you want though.

Thank you so much- I would love the information, do they have a website?

lila331 08-23-2007 11:22 PM

Here is Campus Cargo's website: www.therealcampuscargo.com
The owner's name is Jean Riggs, she's been in business for years, and is incredibly helpful. She can probably get anything you want.

If anyone is looking for other store recs., My sister (Pi Phi) and I (Theta) are in the process of launching our own Greek Lic. bath/cosmetics line -- we're not in stores yet-- but we've visted and/or talked too, what seems like, every Greek store/online boutique in the county! We'd be happy to share our info.

Hope this helps.

And Heartstrings is still amazingly cute.

AU_ZTA86 08-24-2007 07:14 AM

Heartstrings is probably the best greek store (place you can walk into) that I've ever been too - great variety in addition to all of their other cute stuff! For online shopping, greekgiftsetc.com is owned by an Auburn ZTA alumnae and has a cute variety.

tennesseemom 08-24-2007 08:58 AM

Love it, and look at all those Fans! Now add blowdryers and straighteners and humidity and you are in for a fine hair day girls!:)

For anyone that is interested I handpaint pillows with the sorority colors, or whatever color your daughter would want matching dorm room etc. I paint girls with beaded necklaces, bracelets etc. I than paint the sorority name on them. I have sold these to many Georgia and Ole Miss girls. If anyone is interested they are 125.00 and you can email me for pictures. I don't mean to advertise here, that is not my intention, but they are one of a kind.

Silverblue 08-24-2007 08:37 PM

Really, unless you've been there, you can't imagine how sweltering those packed suites in the Panhellenic are during recruitment. I remember as an active I had to take a break from one party because I was queasy. Following the rules, one of the recruitment counselors accompanied me to the ladies' room, and after about a minute of observing my pale, sweating self pressing cold, wet paper towels all over my face and neck, she said she knew I really was sick and wasn't trying to dirty rush anyone, so she left me in peace and went back to her other monitoring duties. At that moment, I couldn't have dirty-rushed anyone even if I had wanted to. I wasn't exactly a walking advertisement for cool, collected Southern womanhood just then!

What a great store! You have to walk in and look to truly appreciate this place. Had to be in Auburn yesterday and wouldn't have missed it even though it was very "picked over" after bid day. They have really unique and "no one has it" type merchandise. I just wish they had a catalog for those that will never actually get to shop there in person.

tennesseemom 08-24-2007 09:17 PM

you're making me jealous that you got to go to Heartstrings!

I completely agree. So many of our girls have had to take breaks during the parties because of the heat. Also, the air conditioning in our suite was broken for the first 2 parties of round 1... when the maintenance men came in to fix it it was over 80 degrees in there!

Jean is AWESOME!! Her store is not to far off interstate 40, just a little off the beaten path. I used to go right by there on my way home from college, so I would always try to "take a rest break" ;);) at that exit! I think Jean is a DZ, and her husband is a Pi Kappa Phi. They were both always soooo friendly!!!

Bid Day

Yeah!! We have a baby Hootie! We are so proud of our daughter, and so glad it is over! She is on cloud 9, smiling from ear to eat! If I eat one more piece of chocolate Willy wonka is going to get me! the Chi O pledge class at UT is ADORABLE, as are all the others!! Does anyone know what quota was? and was it the same for every sorority at UT?

Does anyone know if UT posted a bid list anywhere? Just curious as to where a few girls went!

DZHBrown 08-27-2007 10:47 AM

I've heard that they do not post bid lists. There are a couple of other girls from here that i'd like to know where they went, too!!
