Pageant Winners
According to our national website, ADPi has two pageant winners who will compete for Miss America!
Miss Florida Kylie Williams Iota, Florida State University http://www.missflorida.org/Miss%20Florida.htm Miss North Carolina Jessica Jacobs Beta Upsilon, University of North Carolina at Chapel-Hill http://www.missnc.org/about.html Violets to Kylie and Jessica! |
MAJOR Violets indeed!! We're all going to have to turn in, and cheer them on! Hmmmmm.... Maybe we should talk about this on V V!!
And if you don't know what I mean, talk to ASUADPi!!!! |
Did anyone else watch Miss Teen America on Friday night? Miss South Carolina was a finalist, and I thought she was a shoo-in until she choked on the Question part. I felt so bad for her, not knowing that...
She is an ADPi at Clemson! Her name is Lindsey Sporrer, and I'll let you judge the rest: Congratulations to Lindsey, for being a Finalist!! |

ETA: Mystery solved: Lindsey Sporrer was in the top 15 of the 2004 Miss Teen pagent! |
Mystik - you just beat me to it!
Lindsey is the 2004 Miss Teen South Carolina. She is a member of our Zeta Nu chapter at the Clemson. It doesn't look like Lauren Caitlin Upton is a member :). |
Thank heavens! I truly felt sorry for Lauren Caitlin Upton - you just know that she'll be kicking herself for the rest of her life!

I can totally see anti-pageant folks use her answer as an example of that "girls should be focused on thier studies and not pageants". It reminded me of watching Miss Universe. Watching that pageant, during the Q&A is just a train wreck waiting to happen. The only ones who usually "understand" the questions are the contestants who speak fluent English. I don't know what happens mid-translation but I just love how the contestants give an answer that has absolutely nothing to do with the question (hence Lauren). But hey if she ever makes it to Miss Universe (as Miss USA), she should remember to just give a stupid answer that has nothing to do with the question and she'll win (since the last couple of Miss Universes haven't answered their questions "correctly" and end up winning). |

Yahoo News has a follow up story...here's the link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070828/...south_carolina
And while she's currently not a sister, she *could* still wind up as a sister of ours! :) |
Let's cute her some slack...
She's not stupid. She's young. The poor thing got nervous!
I know these women are trained, but so many people who speak everyday make mistakes. I give lectures every day and I still make mistakes. Anyone who has ever watched the news or, especially lately, the political debates, knows how even a professional can blow things. |

So she's basically saying, "I don't know anyone who doesn't know where the U.S. is on a map, but if that is true that some people don't know where it is, there should be more emphasis on geography"?? I kind of feel like that's still an empty answer. She could have easily turned that into an education platform. I know at least in the state of Texas there is so much emphasis on the state-administered exams, that courses not tested are often left ignored because schools concentrate heavily on prepping for those exams. The whole state-exam movement started when I was in elementary school where we were grilled every single day though junior high almost and based on things I've heard from friends and family who are in the Texas education system, it's only gotten worse. Subjects like science, geography and physical education are often put in the planning books but the lessons are hardly executed because the schools are putting pressure on the teachers to go over the exam material over and over and over again for the sake of their school's scores. But whatever... I guess this is the only state where that's an issue. And I find it hard to believe that she only heard a couple of words of the question. There were like 10 words and she pretty much covered the entire question with "U.S. Americans don't have maps" :p |
She totally could have turned it into a platform by answering something along the lines that she believed that statistic was true because most states now have state standardized tests that are heavily focused on reading, writing and math and that science, social studies and geography are secondary subjects and rarely get classroom time and that that needed to be changed.
(This coming from the teacher :D) |
How old is she, again? Fifteen? Sixteen? I'm still apt to cut her some slack and place the blame on her "handlers", who should have prepared her for such a basic question.
Of course, I am Carmen SanDiego, so it seemed basic to me! ;) |

On Myspace there is a spoof of the Miss Teen South Carolina answer..... it's pretty funny and involves an iPhone and the "revised" answer given by Miss T.SC.
I won't post a link to it because the guy (that's right!) is wearing a sash that is kinda mean... but it's easy to search for if you want a giggle. Do a search for "Miss Teen USA Spoof by: William Sledd" in the Myspace Video section |
All I can say about the whole Miss Teen USA thing is...Miss COLORADO WON! Woo Hoo! :)

Mr F&F listens to me braggin' on my girls over the years.... Tiffany rode with us to a RMH event (she called me super-early in the AM bc her car broke down and she wanted a ride, rather than just bail). When I told him about this news he was all excited to see an ADPi wearing the Miss NJ crown! :D |
I just went to the website www.missnewjerseyusa.com and found a picture of Tiffany. OMG she is so adorable!!!!!!
|
We have another winner! According to the ADPi website:
Congratulations to Brittany Pjetraj, Beta Epsilon, from University of South Carolina who was recently crowned Miss South Carolina Teen USA 2008. Violets to Brittany! |

|
As sorry as I am to hear that Tiffany did not win, I must say congrats to Miss Texas(!) on becoming Miss America. It turns out that Crystle (Miss Texas/Miss America) is a very good friend of a friend.
We had formal tonight so I missed the telecast, but it seems to me that Tiffany represented New Jersey and ADPi very well! |
I know this is an old thread but....
Caitlin Upton, the SC contestant who made the now infamous flub, was on a show last night called "King of the Crown" on TLC.
She competed in her first pageant since the incident. And according to this several websites, she is a member of KD: http://www.mahalo.com/lauren-caitlin-upton And yes, she won the pageant. |
