Alabama Bid Day

I've heard that the Mom's go down for Bid Day at Tuscaloosa and meet their daughters at the sorority houses.

How do you know which house she joins to be there ahead of time? I'm going to try to surprise her and can't figure out where I should go. Any suggestions?

WarEagle07 08-16-2007 09:20 AM

I have heard that bid day at Bama is a huge event where family is encouraged and welcome to attend. Bids will be distributed at a central location which should be posted on the internet site for the Bama PC. After they open their envelopes they go their chapter houses for a reception and pictures. There is no way to know ahead of time where your daughter will receive a bid. My advice to you would be to let her know that you are coming. Bid day was crazy at Auburn, there were so many people present that there was no way I could have located my daughter amidst the frenzy. Plus, she may want to have you there just in case she needs some support if things don't go the way she is hoping. I was able to spend the early part of the day with my daughter, taking her out to lunch and doing a little shopping to help the time pass until bids were distributed. Afterwards, she was busy with pictures and celebrating with her sisters. We had about an hour and a half afterwards to spend together, but she really wanted to shower before pledge night so I dropped her off early. What I am trying to say, is if you want to spend any time with your daughter, plan to do it before bids and not after. It is really fun to be able to share this moment with your daughter and we are very lucky at Auburn and Bama to be able to do so! Good Luck!

strange but what we were told....

I went two years ago as the supportive cousin. This is going to sound wild but many families are told to hang out in front of the house their PNM preffed as number one. Our PNM's mom couldn't believe it and was a wreck but thanks to some good alumni friends we knew in the house, they came and confirmed she was on the list for us. It was weird to me but that year they received their bids in Bryant Denny and ran from there......

Yeah, you might want to get someone to confirm that. If she gets her second choice that could not be so good when you are standing on #1's lawn to congratulate her.

BSCAXO 08-16-2007 01:44 PM

Yeah, it was a real odd feeling but we heard it from multiple people. There are plenty of places you can "hang out" and see the girls run and not have to be parked on the front lawn. We kind of hovered on the very, very edge of the lawn to be safe!!!

MVisKD 08-16-2007 03:03 PM

I went to Alabama, and my mom and dad (and all of my friends' families, too) were waiting for me on the lawn of the house I preffed first..That is typically how it works - I don't think it has changed since I graduated 4 years ago. Usually girls have their cell phones to call their moms if it doesn't turn out that they get their first choice.

When I was there, girls opened their bids at the stadium and then ran to sorority row.

good luck to your daughter!

DeltaMom 08-16-2007 07:18 PM

Bid Day is huge at Bama - quite an experience seeing all the girls running and screaming toward their new houses - and all the fraternity boys gawking! Go if you have the opportunity.
Stand near the traffic light on sorority row outside of the stadium entrance, and have your daughter call you on her cell phone and tell you where to meet her.

Zillini 08-19-2007 05:09 PM

Guess I'm a little late chiming in considering Bid Day starts in about an hour. Why not have her call you on your cell phone? She doesn't even have to know you're in town.

My daughter pledged two years ago. I went and stood in the street between the three houses she went to on pref night. There are so many parents and frat boys milling around. She texted me after she opened her bid so I knew where to go.

Awww.. Txborn... your daughter pledged at the same time as Mdmom's daughter :D

Wipledale 08-13-2009 10:21 AM

My daughter pledged last year. I went to Bryant Denny early enough to see her walk in (and where she could see me) and then was there when she came out. The place was a MAD House...the street by Bryant Denny and Old row was completely filled with people (mostly frat boys). I had heard how crazy it was but had NO idea until I witnessed it first hand. SO glad I was there...She did not get in the house she thought she would and she did txt me from inside the stadium as to which house she was in. I then proceeded to "wade" through the boys, parents and all the girls running to there house...Shew! Crazy...but it is VERY important to attend in my opinion..especially if things don't go quite the way your daughter planned. Be sure and locate the house(s) that she does have left so in case you miss following her over you know exactly where to go. Trust me, if you have not been before it can be quite overwhelming. I was warned way ahead of time and still cannot believe how big a deal it really is...

FSUZeta 08-13-2009 11:32 AM

wipledale, is your daughter content with her chapter now? i know that initially, when you think you are getting a bid from one house, only to find a bid from a different house in the envelope, it can be somewhat of a shock, but if the pnm gives it a chance, they usually find a good group of friends within their house and by the time they are on the other side of rush, they are very happy.

NancyT6061 08-14-2009 08:18 PM

What time is Alabama's bid day this year?

Nancy

AuburnMom08 08-14-2009 08:38 PM

Its at noon, Nancy.

Gung-Ho-Chi-O 08-14-2009 09:18 PM

Hi Ladies!

When will we recieve the bid lists from Alabama and Auburn? I have a cousin going through at Auburn & wrote a few recs for girls attending Alabama.

PinkPalmTree 08-14-2009 11:08 PM

my friend went through rush at alabama last year (went AOII and loved it) and I saw her pictures. Oh my gosh. It looks absolutely INSANE. There were cops and barriers set up holding back all the moms!

Wipledale 08-14-2009 11:26 PM

FSUZeta,
She loves it now! they always say you end where you should be. on the sunday of bid day she was not so sure...but she had a wonderful older sister(who ended up being her big sis) and by the time Sunday night was over she was in love! All her friends are her sisters and she is living with her best friend (sister as well) off campus this year!!

FSUZeta 08-15-2009 08:06 AM

hooray!! i love to hear stories like this!!

Dress code for moms?

My daughter is rushing at Alabama this year. What is the dress code for moms at bid day? It's going to be awfully hot, so I heard comfortable was the dress of the day, then I heard "business casual".

Bear 08-15-2009 06:05 PM

Dress

We went last year. I recommend a Sundress for moms and Polo's and slacks\dress shorts for dads. You will be invited too have Lunch at the house so you will want to look nice. Also, you can stop by the Trunk, next to Tutwiller, and get a cute sorority gift. There is nothing like seeing your daughter come out of Bryant-Denny with her pledge sisters:). You will have a wonderfull time.

jamalter 08-15-2009 06:13 PM

Thanks. I meant to call the Trunk earlier today. They post their Sunday hours as 1-5. Do you know if they will be open early tomorrow? Also, an indulgent question: my daughter is going to 3 pref parties today, and she likes all 3. From what I hear she got very lucky. She said her counselor told her she is guaranteed a bid. How can that be - can't any or all 3 still cut her at this point? She said she doesn't know how it works, that's just what she was told by the counselor. Thanks!

Bear 08-15-2009 06:19 PM

I do not think she has anything to worry about. I have never heard of a girl getting cut from all 3. More than likely she will get her first choice. From what I understand about 90% of the girls get there first choice. I know our daughter did. I am not sure about the hours for the trunk.

There are no "cuts" after preference. Every PNM who attended a preference party is supposed to be somewhere on the preference list of every sorority where the PNM attended preference. "Cuts" (also known as cross cut) come when the PNM is at the bottom or low on each of the three lists and all make quota before PNM gets onto the first bid list, shutting the PNM out. In that case, with quota additions, the PNM will probably still get a bid from one of her three preferences, provided that she listed all chapters that she pref'ed on her bid card.

So if you attend 3 pref parties and put all three on your bid card the chances that you'll get a bid from one of the three is very high.

Titchou 08-15-2009 07:16 PM

With the new RFM, they aren't really quota additions as that had a limitation of 5% of quota. If you make it to pref, and you attend as may parties as you are able and you list them all on your bid card, you will get a bid. The only women left out after pref with RFM are those who don't maximize their options.

Zillini 08-16-2009 10:42 AM

There will be some changes to Bid Day this year. First, in years past Panhellenic would release the new members from the Stadium in alphabetic order by Chapter to go running to their new houses. This year they are supposed to be released in order of physical location on sorority row. The houses the furthest away will go first, then the next one, and so on up Magnolia Drive. Hopefully this will keep those who are still waiting for their girls out of the street and leave a path for the new members to run through.

Second, only immediate family members of the new members and actives will be allowed in the houses. All others are welcome to come hang out on the lawns and street, but cannot enter. There have been problems with boyfriends, just guy friends, fraternity guys, and other non-family members coming for a free meal. Too many of the girls were more interested in spending time with their boyfriends because they hadn't seen them in so long than with the new members.

There were problems with the guys getting to the front of the buffet line while the new members and families were still waiting. Plus, the sheer cost of food has become astronomical. According to my House Director we served well over 700 last year.

Last but by no means least, too many guys showed up intoxicated. Some even tried to sneak alcohol into the sorority houses. UA police will be patrolling to deal with this.

Bid Day is a celebration of the new members and everyone's focus should be on welcoming them to their new homes. While everyone loves the tradition of the festival-like atmosphere of Bama's Bid Day and nobody wants to take that away, it still needs to be controlled.

As I understand from a few parents of current pnms this year, the girls receive their bid at noon.

Best wishes to all on their new homes and pledge classes!

ThetaPrincess24 08-16-2009 12:25 PM

Delta Omicron Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta has 87 new members at Bama.

Alabama' Bid Day List

Please post where we can find the bid day list when it comes up. I have checked several sources and I haven't found it. I was there yesterday, but I'd like to find out about all the PNMs from my area and where they ended up.
