What the???

http://www.freewebs.com/tarversgreek/index.htm

It's like a fake Greek Life site - except they're using real fraternities and sororities along w/ their basic info. They assigned each a brother/sister fraternity, which of course is not real, and I know that the chapter name they assigned to ASA doesn't exist.

AlwaysSAI 08-13-2007 03:02 PM

where did you find that??

I find it a little offensive.....the stereotypes and such being displayed there.

33girl 08-13-2007 03:03 PM

I was googling Alpha Sigma Alpha and it came up.

VandalSquirrel 08-13-2007 03:04 PM

I like that Sarah Michelle Gellar's picture is president of ZTA, and Ryan Phillippe's picture is president of PiKA. The descriptions of the chapters kill me.

I wonder if this is some demented fanfic or someone trying to copy the rushing of houses like ABC Greek did.

AlwaysSAI 08-13-2007 03:06 PM

I'm half tempted to email the guy. If you go to the questionaire it has all types of superficial questions and lists some guys AOL address as the Director of Greek Life.

Hahaha...buffy and that girl from the OC are on 'exec' for ZTA. hahaha. I'll admit it's funny. But, still it bugs me.

DSTRen13 08-13-2007 03:43 PM

That's so random - why would you take the time?

AlphaFrog 08-13-2007 03:49 PM

While I am pretty appalled about the site itself, I do have to say that the description of ASA is pretty dead-on accurate.

Whoever put it together must be two things: 1)weird, and 2) anxious to get sued for Trademark infringement.

OldAOPi 08-13-2007 04:25 PM

That Phi Delt house looks like the one at UNL?

TSteven 08-13-2007 04:31 PM

What the deuce?

For Sigma Chi, the Alpha Lambda chapter is Wisconsin -Madison. However, the chapter house shown is Georgia Tech's.

Also, both Phi Delta Theta and Sigma Phi Epsilon use a combination of both state and Greek letter - i.e. The Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter at UK is "Kentucky Alpha", the Phi Delta Theta chapter at UK is "Kentucky Epsilon". Thus Phi Delta Theta does not have a "Delta Beta" chapter nor does Sigma Phi Epsilon have a "Gamma Gamma" chapter.

Yes, the Phi Delta Theta house shown is the chapter house at Nebraska.

LPIDelta 08-13-2007 05:22 PM

Written about ASA: "[ Bottom line: if you don't fit into any of the other groups, you'll fit in here. ]"

Ok...that is pretty rude. What kind of loser put this site together??

twinkle555 08-13-2007 06:29 PM

The "Chi Omega's" chapter designation is the same designation as our Chi-O chapter here at USF.

This site is pretty creepy...

Obviously I'm no legal expert, but could you guys get the page taken down by claiming that his page violates their Terms of Service?

This guy reminds me of those Rating Communities on LiveJournal, specifically the one started by those tricks sporting the "Tri Delta" name (yay guccic0ndomz!).

Kevin 08-13-2007 07:33 PM

Someone's HQ needs to send a DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) takedown notice to Freewebs. That would probably be enough to get the plug pulled.

Ilaria Ame 08-13-2007 08:56 PM

i might be an idiot but i just don't GET it. what's the point? it's just a bunch of different greek orgs with (mostly accurate though vastly generalized) descriptions. you can't do anything with it like fake rush or rate the houses or whatever.

edit: oh wait, i just realized what the questionare was for. ok, now i'm irritated.

I actually don't find it rude, because that's seriously what many of our chapters are like...very atypical "sorority girls". We have only a few chapters that fit the mold of a sorority stereotype.

I still say that the site is pretty weird, though.

ETA: Does anyone know what campus has all of the listed GLOs?? That could be a clue as to where it came from.

DMCBlondie 08-14-2007 08:52 AM

it looks like someone may have had an assignment in school to create a webpage. they may have used the chapters and stereotypes from their school.

The only one I can think of is Penn State, which has those GLOs plus about 3487638473248723987 more. I can't think of any other campus we share with Kappa. I think they just randomly picked groups.

Oh and as for the ASA description, you can take it either way - personally, I would be much more offended if I was a KD or ZTA with the way they described those two.

I think the chapter descriptions are just kind of stupid - it's the questionnaire that's really the rude part ...

axidgl 08-14-2007 11:30 AM

Have you all ever heard of role playing games online (not video games)? This is what that site looks like to me. My old roommate in college did this (it's REALLY weird). Because there are "Open" positions, and the filled ones have pictures that are of celebrities, that makes me think it's an RPG even more.

They take characters from television shows (she did some anime show) or scenarios (like greek life), select a part to play, get enough people to make it "interesting," then use a blog to "act out" scenes... Like..."The ABCs and the XYZs had a mixer last night. There was so much drama" and then the rest of the "actors" would leave comments in "reaction" to the original, and play off each other in words. An RPG seems to be like a fanfic with different authors...sort of.

It's really weird, but mostly a creative outlet in a roundabout way; I think this may be what is going on over there.

Even if it is a RPG (which I am kind of familiar with) whom ever created it could have had enough tact and respect to use fake organizations and not actual fraternities/sororities with established chapters. I mean, really.

AlphaFrog 08-14-2007 11:39 AM

The site refers to Tarvers University - I suppose maybe the person who created it has the last name of Tarver?

Then it wouldn't be as much fun. I don't think tact or respect is the goal. My guess is the players will be folx wanting to bash the real fraternities and sororities.

33girl 08-14-2007 12:33 PM

I do have to say, though, that I totally love the "ASA" house!

Tom Earp 08-14-2007 02:24 PM

This is to funny!

The LXA house shown is from the University of Kansas and before that was the Alpha Gamma Delta house.

A 3.0 GPA, non drinking, wow where does this person get his info?:D

At least I did not see slum housing for us as Greeks.

Oh well, it gives us something to talk about, right Alphafrog?;)

SigKapCoug 08-14-2007 03:58 PM

Guys, I think it's a webpage for a college-themed roleplaying game. Nothing to get too concerned about!

Uh, when someone's providing false information and is using symbols without permission...that's definitely something to be concerned about.

Just because you don't think anything of it, I doubt HQs would feel the same way. Non-members falsely representing themselves as XYZ is a serious matter.

If someone is talking about a chapter of ASA that doesn't exist and has never existed, implying that our brother fraternity is Phi Delts (not that we don't love you guys - big smooch), saying what our "standard GPA" is, linking it to a questionnaire containing racial slurs and stereotypes, and putting all this on a site that comes up very easily when googling my sorority's name - yes, I think it IS something to be concerned about.

If this was a closed site no one could find, we wouldn't be discussing this to begin with.

yangstar 08-14-2007 04:12 PM

Apparently Chi O is our sorority. Do we own them or something? This site is kinda funny haha.

It's also trademark infringement.

Sister Havana 08-14-2007 05:59 PM

The Kappa house pictured is the IU chapter house.

It seems like the houses pictured are real chapter houses for the GLOs. Would you happen to know if the Alpha Sigma Alpha house pictured is an ASA chapter house? It is quite nice.

It's the Alpha Gam house at Illinois

On one hand it's not a big deal because it's stupid. On the other it's just plain wrong and people should know better and I say let HQs know about it and shut them down.

sarasmile 08-14-2007 11:26 PM

I'm about 99% sure that the photo used to depict AKA house is actually the Theta house at Michigan State.

AGDee 08-15-2007 05:51 AM

If my group was one of those listed, I'd be emailing the site to my International officers and Headquarters... They should be aware, if nothing else. Especially during this time of recruitment when more PNMs are doing searches.

AlphaFrog 10-05-2007 08:11 AM

I don't know what made me think of this site last night, but it's gone. Actually, it says it's frozen, so maybe the right person complained to the domain host.:)

SthrnZeta 10-05-2007 10:45 AM

That sucks - I wanted to see it and I just now found this thread!

EE-BO 10-05-2007 06:47 PM

Did any of these cyber-chapters offer AI?

But on a more serious note- I agree this is very creepy and also worthy of action. If they want to have fun, let them make up their own Greek House names like just about every TV show, movie or Greek parody out there.
