Big 12 Recruitments

My daughter and my niece both begin recruitment today- They are on different sides of the process at different campuses. Best of luck to all the sororities and pnms at Iowa State and Mizzou-- (I can hear a burst of excitement and an indrawn breath of awe as the doors are opened from the houses for the first parties!!!)

Hopeful_Bubbles 08-13-2007 09:30 AM

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but AXO at ISU had a fire upstairs last night. According to the news, another greek house hosted them for the evening and recruitment should go on as scheduled. Thankfully no one was hurt!

oldrusheenowmom 08-13-2007 09:40 AM

Oh- how scary; so glad everyone is fine! Great place to post- do you know which house is hosting them? A special prayer for the AXOs at ISU!

Katmandu 08-13-2007 09:41 AM

Yippee for Big XII Recruitment! (i'm such a fossil that it was the Big 8 when I was going to football games...and it's still hard for me to name the additional 4)

Bid Day for OSU was August 11th, and OU is tomorrow. Any Sooner Recruitment stories out there?

Best of luck to all involved at Mizzou and Iowa State--let us know how your family members are faring oldrusheenowmom (love your name). Wow, sorry to hear about the AXO house, but thankfully no one hurt.

Any word on Kansas, Nebraska, KState? Do they have fall recruitment?

oldrusheenowmom 08-13-2007 09:45 AM

Nebraska is later in August-- my daughter has some high school friends who are Pi Phis there-- Katmandu, I am so bad that I don't consider those other 4 TRUE members:D

OldAOPi 08-13-2007 09:55 AM

Nebraska's starts in a week - the girls move back in this weekend. My dd said that last she knew, there were more girls going through this year than last - when I asked it was maybe 700 plus??? Maybe there was 500 some last year? I think. (She is a RG this time and glad she doesn't have to sing. Which is a good thing - she can't sing! :D) Someone correct me if I am wrong. They have a housing crunch at UNL again - good to get more freshman but then they have to house them somewhere until people start dropping out!

I have one more rec here on my desk to send in and in our little county I think there are 4 going through - which is good for a rural county where most of the kids go to smaller schools or community colleges.

Katmandu 08-13-2007 10:18 AM

I'm with you, Oldrusheenowmom. :p

OldAOPi, those are some great numbers for UNL... When I was halfway through college, my parents were transfered to Omaha, so I spent summers and breaks in Cornhusker country. There are some seriously dedicated fans there! I learned the fight song out of self defense at my summer job, then taught it to our chapter so that when we hosted the Nebraska chapter on a football road trip, we could serenade our northern sisters with, "There is no place like Nebraska...." They loved it!

Hope all the girls from your home town find their homes at that great school.

And Mizzou... Columbia is such a great place to go to school. I think some of the most beautiful campuses in the country are in Big 8 land. (Kansas for instance), and I hope you all keep us updated on how everything goes in the next few weeks!

NUBlue&Blue 08-13-2007 10:33 AM

I took my daughter on a college visit to Nebraska in February and we have a picture of her in front of the Kappa house! Sadly, she decided not to go there since she got in to her first choice....so we're working on our boys! We're taking them to Wake Forest to see the Huskers and we're going back for Homecoming, too!

I'm pretty sure I've stayed in every Kappa house in the Big 8...fun times!

I've lived in the South for over 20 years, but sometimes I really miss the midwest. And then, when it's 60 in December....I don't! ;)

azureblue 08-13-2007 10:49 AM

The University of Kansas began yesterday, and Bid Day is on the 18th. Kansas State began on the 11th, and Bid Day is on the 16th. I will keep you posted!

Oh no! Isn't this the house that had tornado damage a year or so ago, too?

T & P's to the chapter!

srmom 08-13-2007 11:15 AM

My son has 3 good friends who are rushing this week at OU. I won't hear all the details, but will let ya'll know what they pledged at the end of the week.

They are all cute girls, so hopefully, they are having a good rush:)

BLUE - one of the recs I am writing is for a girl who is a mom / gma leg to Kappa. My dd has a lot of friends in that house! She should be here now, it is PLENTY hot and humid. Don't have all those pretty flowers that the Macon Magnolia thread was all about though - more like marigolds, pansies and zinnias.

And KAT - it's almost football season here, so it's all about Big Red. Front page of the sports daily from here on out. Had to laugh - was at the Iowa State Fair yesterday and picked up the Des Moines Sunday paper - nothing about college football in their sports section. We are an obsessed bunch!

Football Fan 08-13-2007 11:41 AM

Katmandu,
On another thread there was a report from Oklahoma State. All NPC sororities there made quota! Congratulations to the chapters and to Panhellenic there.

NUBlue&Blue 08-13-2007 11:53 AM

Nebraska doesn't use a quota system. And they don't plan to (I asked that question when we went on our Red Letter Day visit). Pledge class size is tied to total, I believe. It's worked for 125 years, so why mess with it! (absolutely a midwestern mentality! :) )

They still have summer fraternity rush and pledges can move into the houses on the first day of school if there's room.

Since I really didn't pay much attention to greek affairs until my daughter went to college two years ago, I had no idea that there was any other way!

That was the AXO house at the University of Iowa in Iowa City (Big 10)--

RockChalk2010 08-13-2007 12:53 PM

I'm at KU, and we are in the middle of Day 2 (the second day of open house). The girls went to 7 houses yesterday (Sunday). Today they went to 3 before lunch, right now we have lunch until 1:00, and then they will go to their remaining 3 houses this afternoon!

1st invites (Philanthropy) is tomorrow, the girls will go to max 8 houses. 2nd invites (entertainment/house tours) is on Wednesday, and the girls will go to a max of 5 houses. Thursday: school starts, and there is no recruitment. Friday evening is Pref night. The girls will go to max 3 houses, and then Saturday afternoon is Bid Day!

azureblue 08-13-2007 01:10 PM

Welcome RockChalk2010! I graduated from KU in 2002. Best of luck this week, and try to stay cool!

The Des Moines Register says that Kappa Alpha Theta hosted them. Alpha Chi Omega will continue recruitment using the Beta Sigma Psi fraternity house. Best wishes, of course.

Just wondering: did Theta host them because of "DePauw Duo" feelings and traditions? No matter what the reason, good to see greeks helping other greeks at a difficult time.

RockChalk2010, the online version of the Kansan said about 780 women are going through recruitment at KU this year. Is that number fairly accurate?

We had 770 late on Saturday evening. I think there were about 8 girls added between Saturday evening at like midnight and Sunday morning. (the cut off for registration was Saturday afternoon I believe, but I heard there was a problem with some online registrations.)

The list I just printed off for drop outs was around 60 or so (I think). That includes girls who didn't show up, dropped out, etc.

oldrusheenowmom 08-14-2007 09:40 AM

Two Words

Heat and Humidity for Iowa State and Mizzou; d said some really nice/great girls are going through, but she hasn't found a "rush crush" yet; n is exhausted but has had a great time-

More likely because Theta is less than a half-block away. :) I'm glad no one was hurt and hope the members will be able to go back soon. I don't know if Alpha Chi had a sprinkler system or not...

oldrushee did your daughter say how many women were going through at Iowa State? I'd be curious to see how those numbers compare to last year.

oldrusheenowmom 08-14-2007 12:50 PM

was actually hoping that you were there helping out and had the numbers:)

RockChalk2010 08-14-2007 02:43 PM

Just an update from KU:

We have 13 sororities here. We are in the middle of 1st invites right now. 8 rounds today of philanthropy. Open house (which was on Sunday and Monday) started out with about 780 girls. About 60 dropped, which leaves us with around 710-720. (I'm not sure on the actual number).

For open house round, my chapter had a 99.4% return rate, with only TWO girls who did not place us in their top 8! Panhellenic made us cut our invite list down a lot because of this, but we are very excited to have such an astounding return rate for open house!!

oldrusheenowmom 08-14-2007 02:48 PM

You and your sisters must be doing a super job!!!!

What wonderful news, RockChalk, and what a GREAT start to your week! You must be masters at hospitality and making people feel truly welcomed and valued.

PS> I love KU--what a beautiful campus... Thanks so much for the update. Love to hear about recruitment in the Big VIII (XII)

KU will always hold a special place in my heart, too as that is where I fell in love with my husband...even though we went to Nebraska, we "got together" on a philanthropy football run from Lincoln to Lawrence. Yes, two days in a van going one mile at a time....lots of time for bonding! It's a gorgeous campus (with lovely sorority houses!)

irishpipes 08-14-2007 03:30 PM

Bids went out at Oklahoma 29 minutes ago!

Katmandu 08-14-2007 04:27 PM

Any Boomer Sooner families out there waiting out a bid? We haven't heard a thing about OU yet...many of my friends went greek there during the Pleisocene era. Love to hear an update!

banditone 08-14-2007 04:39 PM

What is the OU quota? I heard some rediculous number from someone there.... Want to see if it's true..

oldrusheenowmom 08-14-2007 07:04 PM

Iowa State Numbers

My d thought about 360 started out at ISU; she isn't sure about numbers that may have dropped-- wish the greek system could get a little boost there!! Does anyone know the numbers at Mizzou?

ETA: Based on ISU Kappa's note below- then GOOD- hope they keep the boost going!!

Wow, that's impressive! Last year I think there were only about 300 signed up to go through recruitment. According to the Iowa State Greek Statistics page only 225 joined through Formal Recruitment last year (that doesn't say how many started the process, though...)

Football Fan 08-14-2007 07:41 PM

Hello,
Since you are in Kansas do you have any news about results at Wichita State? There are not many GLOs there, but today was bid day. If you have any numbers could you post them, please?
Thanks.

Srmom1 08-14-2007 08:19 PM

Just heard that one of my son's good friends at OU just pledged Tri Delta today!!!

rusheemom 08-14-2007 08:23 PM

Last I heard there were 1150 going through at Mizzou (this was as of last Friday).

Srmom1 08-14-2007 08:48 PM

Two more reports from OU, another sweet Tri Delt and one cutie Chi Omega:)

Katmandu 08-14-2007 09:17 PM

Srmom1, do you know what quota was and how many went through at OU? Inquiring minds want to know.....Thanks, and congrats on your son's friends!

Aphigal 08-14-2007 10:11 PM

I heard that quota was 69 at OU. Not sure who matched what. I know Alpha Phi - in their first formal recruitment since returning to OU- matched quota ++ (but since I am not 100% sure of the quota addition number I won't post)

YEAH!

Katmandu 08-15-2007 07:24 AM

Aphigal, I am not surprised Alpha Phi did well--their chapter website did a great job of talking about the benefits of participating in a recolonization effort, they really presented Alpha Phi in a wonderful way, and that house!! Wow.

irishpipes 08-15-2007 11:16 AM

AOII took 77 at OU.
