A tavern in your town.

I'm not asking how wasted you get, but near your school or neighborhood is there a place ala Cheers where everybody knows your name, or where you feel you can just kick back?

Both of my favorities have been torn down.

Just thought it would a nice timeout from recruitment talk.

I used to work at a bar while I was in college. I quit about 3 years ago, but I still frequent the place after work, whether it be to have dinner or have a few beers before I head home. I'm totally fine going there by myself because I know I'll run into one of my friends. I trained all the bartenders and waitresses at some point, so if my drinks/food aren't free, they're heavily discounted.

Magoo's Pizza's on University (back in the 80s, once owned by the family of one of my Georgia Alpha Gam sisters who used to post here on GC) had 100+ beers on tap and was a sorority favorite enjoyed by many from my chapter. They recently closed, but will reopen later on this month with the same staff, just with a different name. Over the years we've dated bouncers and bartenders and after a while there's no such thing as waiting in line to get in and having to show your ID. You can't go wrong with 75 cent drafts. :)

ETA: To the OP, thank you for reminding us that there IS life outside Fall Recruitment.

No, but I suspect they'll be building one shortly.

Back in undergrad, there was a Bennigan's across the street from campus. They were great about not checking ID's.

They're out of business now.

DeltAlum 08-12-2007 11:05 PM

There is none now, because I don't drink much outside of home, but there used to be...

Probably my favorite was O'Halloran's Tipperary Pub in Detroit. It was a place where a lot of TV folks and a lot of cops hung out.

Strange mix of people.

Tommy O'Halloran used to lock the doors at closing time -- but would often go on serving his friends.

You couldn't get into the place on St. Pats day. Literally.

At UGA, Boar's Head Lounge was that place for me. That is the only bar I ever really looked forward to going to- and we knew everybody there.

The usual game plan was to drink beer and 7&7s while eating stale popcorn- and then at closing time go to someone's apartment, order a pizza and then drink beer and play poker until sometime Sunday morning.

DeltAlum 08-12-2007 11:11 PM

Actually, I didn't think about college, but I had a place in Columbus and a couple of places in Athens (Ohio, not Georgia).

Columbus was the Bier Stube and either The Union or The Tavern in Athens.

Engelwood 08-13-2007 03:12 AM

At the University of Oregon we've got Rennie's Landing. It's a mainstay on campus. I cringe when I think how much money I've poured into that place over the years...

mu_agd 08-13-2007 04:47 AM

Yep.. although don't get there as much now that I don't live two buildings down from it.

minDyG 08-14-2007 05:43 AM

There is a place in Augusta called Helga's Lounge where my sister's best friend bartends...and it's becoming that bar for me.

In Athens, it was Copper Creek.

The Tavern, Austin, TX

...white wings = messy greatness.

Tom Earp 08-15-2007 02:33 PM

Used to go to Hoops after I left the liquor store!

Boy talk about everybody knowing each other!:)

One New Years Eve, Margret had a late date, she closed the place and five us and she just drank free!:D

Still there, but drive by, time and the people who go there have changed!:(

Senusret I 08-15-2007 02:53 PM

The Tombs

The Tombs in Georgetown. I have other places where I like to go, but that's the place where they're always glad I came.

irishpipes 08-15-2007 02:54 PM

At Oklahoma State it's Eskimo Joe's
At University of Illinois it's Kam's

ForeverRoses 08-15-2007 03:18 PM

In college (Ohio University) it was The Pub. When I was home from school (Columbus) it was the Blue Danube. In Evansville, it was Sportsman's. Now I'm in Indy with kids, so it is usually my neighbor's house, around the pool! (no fear of drinking and driving)

I was in Columbia, SC last week and we went out to Yesterday's Tavern and Restaurant in Five Points. It made me think of this thread. I was definitely impressed! :)

Also, if you're ever in Augusta, you should stop by Helga's Pub and Grille on Central Avenue and let me pour you a beer! We have the widest selection of draft beer in the CSRA and the best bar food in town, by far. :) (Not spam--I'm just representing here. Ha.)

icelandelf 03-19-2008 04:34 PM

Yes, it's called Oak Hill's Tavern. It's a tiny juke joint not too far from where I work. I adore it because I walk in and one of the staff is already pouring me a Guinness.

It's either there, the Flying Saucer or Sherlocks. But mostly OHT.

You work at Helgas? I've never been there - I'm a Surrey Tavern girl myself. I once knew a guy who's girlfriend (now wife) worked there but I forgot her name... short and blonde is all I remember :P I'll have to check your place out so you can hook me up ;)

You are correct, sir!
Way before your time, but The Orange Bull was upstairs (rickety) over the laundromat. It's gone now, replaced by the Burger King on Guadalupe.:(

bejazd 03-19-2008 04:57 PM

ooh yum I had to look up white wings on recipezaar.com...I think I have a plan for something that will go nicely with late Easter afternoon margaritas!!!

In Long Beach, beachbrat...Joe Jost's and O'Connell's.

ISUKappa 03-19-2008 05:20 PM

We don't really go out much anymore, but the closest thing would probably be Al's Red Frog. Every Wednesday during the husband's softball season, at least half the team is there for 1/2 price pizza and beer. The beer isn't anything spectacular (just your average domestics) but the pizza is awesome. We almost always have the same server who knows exactly how many pitchers of what kind of beer to bring to the table before everyone gets there.

The husband also goes to the local microbrew at least once a week for lunch - they all know him there.

Joe Jost's:)an old haunt before I headed up north (well, central, as in valley) several years ago, along with second street.
The other one: new to me. O'Connell's?
Now, headed back to LA.:D
Hardly party hardy now, but I enjoy a place where I can just kick back with friends.

SWTXBelle 03-19-2008 10:20 PM

Then and Now

The Green Parrot in San Marcos - 25 years later, it's still there! Wonder if my daughter will enjoy it as much as I did?

Xylochick216 03-20-2008 12:48 PM

The Lighthouse was where we always went. It was recently bought by the school, sadly.

We also had an on-campus bar where we could buy beer and wine with our meal plan. All my friends thanked my parents for our wine habit.

Yeah, I love it. I've never been to Surrey Tavern--haha. Our owners have recently (like, I would say definitely within the past couple of years but I don't know precisely) bought the place (Helga's), but they used to own Limelite. So, if you've ever been there, I've been told that the atmosphere is very similar.

AlethiaSi 03-24-2008 10:53 AM

oooo my fave bars were the Dark Horse Tavern, Murphy's and Balducci's (which are both out of business :( ) but now there is the Red Jug Pub, which was started by the bouncers and bartenders from Murphy's/Ducci's (it had the same owner...) and my other fave bar was American Pie (my ex was the manager which was a nice perk) but that closed, He opened a new place which is nice and I've been to, but it's not my town anymore lol :o:(
