A Very Southern Recruitment=A Very Carnation Recruitment!

A Very Southern Recruitment

Sweet Tea is now at Philanthropy parties!!! After going to five parties yesterday, the PNMs chose four sororities to return to and she chose Azaleas, Crapemyrtles, Hydrangeas, and Magnolias. Today the girls are wearing T-shirts and shorts. Tonight after parties, they'll rank the groups and she'll let me know what order she put them and tomorrow, they'll get their invitations to Skit Parties.

There are a few other girls from this area also at this university, but I'm not sure if I'll get regular updates or not. If I do, I'll throw them in along the way! I did get an email from one girl a few hours before everything began. She was supposed to get a phone call from her rush advisor about meeting with her, or something, but she never got a call. So she went with her friends when they met with their rush advisor. She said she can't believe all the beautiful girls, and that she was beginning to worry about getting a bid. I told her to remember the Golden Rules of Rush..."Keep an open mind!" and "Maximize your options!"

As soon as I hear from Sweet Tea, I'll post! Keep your fingers crossed!

hope sweet tea has a sweet time today!

carnation 08-09-2007 07:02 PM

I can't pick a favorite Southern plant!;) I hope she gets her favorite choices tomorrow!

alum 08-09-2007 07:51 PM

Great aliases. I am truly amazed at the creativity that our GCers use for the fake names.

Hopeful_Bubbles 08-09-2007 07:52 PM

Good luck to Seet Tea!

violetpretty 08-09-2007 08:30 PM

I like azaleas because they come in so many colors, crapemyrtles because they are stunning when they grow to be huge (they just won't grow in MD:(), hydrangeas because you can change the color depending on the acidity or basicity of the soil, and magnolias just smell so good! If the sororities are all just as fabulous as the codes, then Miss Sweet Tea really can't go wrong. Good luck to her!

howtheSunrose 08-09-2007 10:10 PM

Yay SweetTea! I'm going to have to go for azaleas :)

trojangal 08-09-2007 10:13 PM

And what is the name of the fifth group? Can't wait to hear how Sweet Tea does!

honeychile 08-09-2007 10:35 PM

I just love the names!!! Sweet Tea is precious, but those lovely Southern flower bushes!! I love them all, but oh, how I would love to have a Crapemyrtle!!

Violetpretty, there are two types of crapemyrtles which will grow in the northern part of the South (which weather includes my part of the country), but I just can't think of the name. They are the dark pink variety, that I remember.

ETA: Both the Baton Rouge and Sacramento types of crape myrtle will grow in PA. They're both a deep red/fuschia shade.

Love the code names and all their blooms! Just got back from Maine today, and I saw what I thought were some white hydrangeas there (is that possible?!?). They were very unusual. Of course, as a Mississippi girl, I'm partial to magnolias! Can't beat azaleas and crapemyrtles either. Good luck to Sweet Tea--hope she has an easier time deciding her favorite than I do!!!

AGDLynn 08-10-2007 06:54 AM

Re: White Hydrangea's..I have 2 bushes outside of my garage. When we first moved here, I think they were a little blue/purpleish....it depends on the soil and evidentl, my soil didn't get a "let's get a little bit of dramatic color" gene.

My hometown is the "Crepe Myrtle" town for some strange reason, lol.

oak leaf hydrangeas have white blooms.

agdlynn - the amount of iron and aluminum in the soil, along with the soil ph, dictates how deep the shades of purple/blue blooms are on your hydrangeas, but it can't change the actual color (that they should be). it sounds like maybe your soil makeup has changed over the years. check the ph of the soil and do a quick google search with a few of these buzz words and you will find out what you should add to your soil. you will have beautiful blooms again in no time!!!

Here in Tally you'll see crape myrtles in red, fuschia, purple, pink, and white. We have none in our yard right now, but have a couple of Southern Magnolias, an Oriental Magnolia, at least one dogwood and a couple of of redbuds in addition to a miniature gardenia, miniature hydrangeas and a number of tea olives that are getting removed this fall and replaced with azaleas.

ISUKappa 08-10-2007 09:34 AM

This Midwesterner has four hydrangeas growing along one side of her house: two white and two pink. I'm sure they're not the same hybrid as what grows in the South, but they are very pretty. If we had a different soil pH, the pink could be blue, but I don't really feel like messing with it. As it is, they didn't bloom this year because we didn't cut them back. :( The white are growing like gangbusters, though.

alum 08-10-2007 10:14 AM

Crape myrtles grow in the DC area. Both my next-door neighbor and the people across the street have the hot pink variety.

sueali 08-10-2007 10:55 AM

My dad has a crepemyrtle in his yard in Maryland, so I know there is a variety that grows there.

I guess I have seen some grow in MD but the one in my yard is pathetic looking.

BBelleADPi 08-10-2007 09:04 PM

This is my third try trying to post updates, so this time it will be short and sweet.

Trojangal: fifth group shall be called Gardenia.
Sweet Tea is having a very good rush. She was invited back to all the parties at the first round of invites; she cut Gardenia. At the next round of cuts, she was invited back to all except Hydrangia. Today she attended skit parties of Azalea, Magnolia, and Crapemyrtle, and feels very lucky because there were some massive cuts made last night. If she gets back all 3 groups for prefs tomorrow, it could be a hard choice. Today was Skits Day and she loved the skits she saw. Tomorrow morning, she'll receive pref invitations and the parties are later in the day. Say a prayer!

BBelleADPi 08-10-2007 09:11 PM

And updates on a few other girls from the area:

"Lil' Lady" is also having a very good rush. She has been invited to the allotted number of parties each round. At first cuts, she cut CrapeMyrtle, and her second cut was Gardenia. She attended skit parties at Azalea, Magnolia, and Hydrangea. Tomorrow is pref!

Lil' Lady's friends: PNMFriend1 was cut from Azalea at first cuts; I don't know about other cuts nor other invites, but I do know she went to Magnolia's skit party today. PNMFriend1 and PNMFriend1 were cut from Azalea and Magnolia at first cuts. Again, I don't know about other cuts nor invites, but I do know they went to Hydrangea's skit party today.

More tomorrow!!

honeychile 08-10-2007 10:31 PM

Saying a prayer for Sweet Tea, Lil Lady, and their friends!

If they get the bid they want, then that's what counts! Unless, of course, one's a sorority with colors you & I would both love! ;)

trojangal 08-11-2007 09:15 AM

So, looking forward to updates...hope all the girls are doing well!

BBelleADPi 08-11-2007 10:13 AM

Update time!!!!!

Sweet Tea will be returning to Crapemyrtles and Magnolias for prefs!:) She went shopping last night for new heels to go with her pref dress. Parties will start around noon and go for an hour each and then the girls will rank their preferences. Bid Day tomorrow!

I have no updates as of yet on the other girls, but will post when I get them!

AnatraAmore 08-11-2007 10:51 AM

Hooray!!! That is exciting!!! Good luck Sweet Tea!!!

trojangal 08-11-2007 12:05 PM

Good luck with prefs!

Ocalagirl 08-11-2007 02:31 PM

I hope she has a wonderful prefs and good luck with ranking her choices tonight!

BBelleADPi 08-11-2007 10:56 PM

More updates on pref round:

Lil Lady preffed at Azalea and Magnolia.

I haven't heard about the other girls.

More tomorrow!

mystikchick 08-12-2007 01:56 AM

Oooh! Good luck to all of them! How exciting, hopefully tomorrow we'll have the first results of who's ending up where this fall :D

LOVEinZTA 08-12-2007 02:51 AM

What's that in the air? I think I'm smelling magnolias!

BBelleADPi 08-12-2007 10:40 AM

Update, but no definite results yet!

I have not yet heard from Sweet Tea, but I will post as soon as I do.

Got an email form Lil' Lady this morning. She was out the door to pick up her bids. Said she has known all along where her heart lies, but after the two prefs she became very emotional, cried, and got a huge headache. She said one of the girls at one of the prefs had written her a long letter, and she was so touched. She talked to her Gamma Chi, sorted out her feelings, and made her decision. She said she'll let me know later on today what was in her envelope, but I'm not holding my breath waiting on her! She'll be out with her new sisters! I'll call her mother after church.

Other:

PNMFriend1 was invited to Magnolias and Hydrangeas. She is a legacy to Magnolias.
PNMFriends 2 and 3 only received pref invites to Hydrangeas. They both want Hydrangeas.

I've missed Sunday School. Off to church...

Cane94G8r97 08-12-2007 10:49 AM

Strange Emotional Investment

I can't even tell you how funny I find it that I see myself running ot my computer at all hours to check on the fates of all of these PNMs. Perhaps it is because I have no legacy in my life that I get pulled into these stories. I am an advisor to my collegiate chapter and will be involved in recruitment in a couple of weeks. My role is very much in the background, so I tend to see the PNMs names much more than the PNMs themselves. Best of all to all the ladies going through recruitment at every school this year! Keep the updates coming!!!
