Pregnancy
Any other pregnant GC Ladies? ...or first time mommies?
I am 8 1/2 weeks along and having an absolutely miserable time! I am vomiting 3-6 times per day, all day long, and I have to see my OB every week because I am losing too much weight. I have tried soda crakers, ginger ale, peppermints, gatorade...nothing helps. Any advice would be appreciated (but if you tell me your pregnancy was/is wonderful and you were/are never sick, I might have to hunt you down and vomit on you!) |
3 months of VOMITING LIKE MAD ALL DAY LONG with the first one.
Morning sickness is a misnomer...it was ALL DAAAAY. Second pregnancy, every night before I went to bed, I took a unisom (NOT the gel kind, the regular pill kind, it doesn't hurt the baby) and a vitamin B6 and B12, and a B6 and B12 in the morning first thing, and I wasn't sick. It takes a few days to start working. It also helps you sleep at night and have engery all day. Congrats.:) Welcome to your dream come true and your worst nightmare all rolled into one.;) Something here might help too... |
I am! I am 36 weeks along with #3 (all boys)
As for morning sickness-mine was pretty bad as well. Have you tried vitamin b6 suppliments? Those helped me some. Also, try cola syrup- basically it's the same stuff they use for coke/pepsi but it is a syrup (not carbonated) and without the caffine. I would put that over ice and sip on it. Finally, I found that carbs/sugar made my morning sickness much worse, so I tried to snack on proteins- cheese sticks, grilled chicken strips, etc. Unfortunately, there is no cure for morning sickness- only time! You should feel better by week 16:rolleyes: Congrats! |
My sister had a lot of luck with ginger. She bought crystallized ginger to chew on, and kept ginger tea on hand. It helps to settle the stomach but can be a bit intense on the taste buds for some people. Mint tea can also be soothing, and is caffeine free.
I know other people who swore by tums and the BRAT diet. Bananas Rice Applesauce Toast. Also instead of Gatorade, or stuff of that variety, try something like Pedialyte that is made for kids. It has less sugar and no funky dyes in it. |
I am not pregnant nor do I have children, but this thread is scary:(!
I hope you all feel beter. Where is a good feel better cat pic when I need it? |
Not EXACTLY what you're looking for...
|
Eat a couple of calcium chews at bedtime. In the AM, eat a soda cracker or two before you sit up. Sleep on your right side until your third trimester, then switch to your left.
|
congrats!
i am 27 weeks preggers with my second girl...:o
the first time around was A BREEZE. i actually said that if pregnancy was truly that easy, i could have 4 or 5. this time around? what the hell...no vomiting, just incessant nausea 24/7. turned out to be my prenatal vitamin making me sick. after that passed it was all good, until about week 15, when i found out i have a disorder that caused my pelvis to soften and spread way too much. Dr put me on tylenol with codeine to help me sleep, nothing works. i am in constant pain all day and especially at night. probably an 8 1/2 on a 1-10 scale.:( i am seriously considering gettin my tubes tied...but im only 26 and dont want to do it so young!! the only thing that helped my nausea was a bottle of the childrens anti-nausea syrup and lots of eggs. fried, scrambled, didnt matter. something about the protein i think helped me out. |
LeslieAGD,
First, congratulations! Second, you should know that it's dangerous to ask for advice concerning pregnancy and parenting! You'll get more than you need without soliciting it! But, since you asked, here's my two cents. When I was pregnant with my first child, I was extremely sick... all damn day long!!! I lost so much weight that I was admitted to the hospital and put on an IV. I was then given a glorious pill called Zofran. Ask your doctor about it; it's seriously a miracle pill. It is a drug that was developed to help cancer patients deal with the nausea associated with chemotherapy. Because of this (it's cancer-related use), it is extremely expensive (like $50/pill - no joke). If your insurance company will pay for it (or part of the cost), ask your doctor to prescribe you a 30-day supply (which would probably be 90 pills). If your insurance company won't pay for it, ask your doctor to prescribe you enough to last a couple days - long enough to get to where you're feeling human again, and to get some nutrients in you. If you and your doctor decide Zofran is too strong for you (which it might be - I've never known anyone else to take it for pregnancy-related sickness), ask about Fenergan (I probably spelled that wrong). It doesn't work nearly as well as Zofran, but it does work. I took this when I was pregnant with my second child because I was still sick, but not hospitalized. You could also look into switching prenatal vitamins. Some brands are more difficult to keep down than others. If that's the culprit, then you're in luck! I hope you feel better soon! Keep us posted. |
What worked miracles for me was Ginger Altoids. I would have one in my mouth whenever I needed to get out of bed or fall asleep even. It was awful for my teeth probably, but they got me through life. Of course, I wasn't working at the time, so I was able to stay in bed most of the time.

My pregnancy with my son was very easy - no morning sickness, no insomnia, no back problems, etc... BUT I had had two consecutive miscarriages in the seven months prior to becoming pregnant, so I was constantly worried that something was going to happen again (especially because I had little to no symptoms) even up until about 30 weeks, and then I switched to worrying about pre-term labor.
Things were a little, er, slow going in the back end and I ended up taking colace every day with my prenatal from about 16 weeks until after I had my son. My son is 17 months and I've recently been feeling the urge to have another. |
Another thing you can try for nausea/vomiting are the Sea Bands that are sold for motion sickness. It is basically a bracelet that keeps a ball on the accupressure point that stops your nausea. You should be able to find them at Walgreens or CVS or somewhere like that.
Good luck to you and happy pregnancy! |
Congratulations, Leslie!
I'm at 21 weeks with my first child. I had horrible morning sickness, or, more accurately, morning, noon, and night sickness, until about 16 weeks. I lived on Diet 7up and Wheat Thins. Since the 16 week mark, I've been sick about once a week, so it has gotten better. I can finally walk into the kitchen without feeling the need to vomit. I've progressed to back pain, and today had a very sad realization that I no longer have ankles. I called my mom in hysterics, and not only did she laugh, she told everyone in her office, too. Oh, well. I may have over-reacted a bit. My advice is to enjoy your pregnancy as much as you can. I can't believe we're half-way there. Oh, and if you feel the need to read every book on the market, take things with a grain of salt. When my husband realized I had memorized the "What Could Go Wrong" chapter in What to Expect When You're Expecting, he took the book away from me. |
I'm not and have not been pregnant, but I get nauseous pretty much all the time. One thing that has worked for me is this stuff called Emetrol. It's sold near the tums type stuff in the drug store, it has a rainbow on it with a white box. Idk how it works, but it does.
hope that helps? congratulations and good luck with everything :) |
Is it true that you fart A LOT when pregnant? That's got to be worse than morning sickness...socially, lol.

Sadly, it is for me. I usually blame it on a) the dog, b) my husband, or c) some other innocent bystander. Whoever smelt it, dealt it, and all that.:) |
This thread is all the birth control I'll ever need. Thank you :)
|
Congrats Leslie! I'll be hoping for a ZA AGD legacy! I'm sorry you're having such a rough time but it should pass soon. I had a friend who ended up hospitalized and on IVs with both of her pregnancies and she just had to wait it out. I don't have advice to give, but I hope you're feeling better before the school year starts. The second trimester is usually the easiest, physically.
|
I had horrible morning sickness with my two girls - none with my boys (!). I ate a lot of chocolate Malt O Meal. I could usually keep it down, and at least when I couldn't it was easy to throw up - sad, isn't it, when you pick your foods not for what they taste like, but how easy they are to throw up. . . .but remember, it is worth it. Miserable, I know, but worth it!
|
I wonder if that is common, because I had morning sickness (and yes, did pick out food based on how it would be to throw up!) with my girl, but not my boy as well... I've thought it had to do with the unisom and B vitamins, but it may just as easily be the gender difference. I've also heard that it could have been harder on me with my husband being 100% Zapoteca Mexican...I read that mulatto babies are harder on the mother.
|
I'm on boy #3 and have had horrible morning/noon/night sickness with all of them- so I cannot imagine how bad it would be if I had a girl!
The sickness for the most part went away around week 16, however I still have certain foods (like Chinese Buffet) that I can't even look at without getting sick. I guess too many memories of what it tasted like the second time around. Oh, and I still gag when I brush my teeth in the morning. Anyone else have this problem? My 2 year old now fake gags when I brush his teeth. I think he thinks that is part of the teeth brushing process. |

One of my doctors said she thinks that women whose first pregnancy is with a girl get sicker than those whose first pregnancy is with a boy. Something about the influx of female hormones, which are the ones essentially responsible for the morning sickness. Oh, and Leslie, you should prepare yourself for some major heartburn. It seems like the women who suffer from morning sickness subsequently suffer from heartburn in the last trimester. I popped Tums like candy! (Hopefully, however, you'll avoid this pregnancy side-effect!) |

one word of advice for anyone pregnant or planning on ever being pregnant...if you are hurting/uncomfortable, tell someone and dont let up. i was in a car accident two years ago, and thought that my back pain now was just flaring up a bit from it. as i mentioned earlier in the thread, the car accident was the cause for another condition i have...i'm on codeine for pain at night (doesnt help though :() and had i not bugged the living hell out of my Dr. he would have assumed like i did that it was "normal" pregnancy back pain. turns out, i may end up out of work and in a wheelchair the last month or so if it doesnt get any better... i think that is why kids are so precious and such a blessing when they get here...if not, we'd have one and look at it like "huh, all that for this??" lol! |
I am a Tums popper as well, but I figure that at least I am getting some extra calcium.
Oh, and the best baby gift I recieved was a prenatal massage. I am a stomach sleeper, so being stuck on my sides while preganant is killing me. But when you have a prenatal massage, the table has a belly-hole in it, and you get to lie on your stomach. that alone was wonderful! |

I haven't been in the family way in a long time (youngest is 13). The D caused morning sickness and all-day queasiness. I think I got sick only once during the 9 months with the boy.
Related to the hole-in-the-massage-table-story-- Swimming (or just being in the water) was a great way to reduce back pain. My oldest was born in the fall. I was a SAH Army wife so consequently spent a lot of time at the O Club pool that summer with the other LT wives. Older moms said I was going to "boil" the baby in utero but since my OB discounted that, I continued to go to the pool. Anyway, since I had a big tummy and couldn't lay on my front, I was only 1/2 tan. When LT Alum finally got some time off that summer, we headed down to Hilton Head where I promptly dug a hole in the sand each morning to accomodate the big mound so I could get my back-half tan... |
