"Pet" Peeves

Do your pets have any pet peeves? The pet ramp thread got me thinking about this... LOL...

My dog can't stand it when you move furniture or large objects around. She throws an absolute temper tantrum-- barking, howling, jumping, growling. It's actually pretty funny.

The first time this happened was we lived in Texas-- I kept my balance ball on a chair on the far right side of the living room. One night, after I used it, I put it on the far left of the living room.

Hours later, I'm in bed and frightened out of a deep sleep to hear Riley barking at the top of her lungs. I'd never heard her make that kind of sound before and I was convinced someone had broken in and I was a goner.

Not so much. The little princess decided that the ball was in the wrong place and I needed to move it... RIGHT NOW. It was 4 AM.

I was reminded of this incident this morning when we were doing some heavy duty house-cleaning and furniture moving and she started in again.

So my dog has OCD or a major pet peeve-- she likes everything in its place and Lord help you if you decide to mix it up.

Does anyone else have a pet like mine?

AlphaFrog 08-03-2007 11:30 AM

My cat (and my toddler) cannot STAND for me to go to the bathroom without being in there with me. Besides work, I have forgotten what it's like to pee without an audience.:o

ForeverRoses 08-03-2007 11:35 AM

Don't talk on the phone with my oldest male cat in the room. He will start head-butting you to get your attention the second you pick up the phone. And if the phone rings, he will actually race you to the phone. I have tripped over him many times.

Come to think of it- don't talk on the phone with my kids in the room either. They will suddenly decide to have indepth conversations with me the minute I pick up the phone.

Senusret I 08-03-2007 11:50 AM

My cats will not eat any food out of their bowl more than an hour after it has been served.

AlethiaSi 08-03-2007 12:48 PM

Idk if this is a pet peeve of Brody but he howls whenever the fire truck goes by with the sirens and stuff on, we've taken to howling when we see the lights or anything, to try to get him to do it, but he'll do it at all hours of the night, wake us up and everything, even then though it's still pretty funny.

Another thing of his, is his blankets. we have 4 Berkshire blankets and we think he was taken away from his mom too soon because he always drags those damn blankets around everywhere, and sucks on them, chews on them, the works... we can't even wash them, he freaks out but we're slowly trying to cut them down so they are quite so gross lol .

BuckeyeTriDelta 08-03-2007 12:53 PM

My cat runs around like a crazed maniac at night and it drives me nuts.

_Lisa_ 08-03-2007 01:04 PM

One of my dogs absolutely cannot stand hair dryers, fans, blowing in his face, etc. Anything more than a slight breeze outside & he hops around like he is being attacked.

sueali 08-03-2007 01:19 PM

One of my dogs barks and freaks out if I am giving attention to my other dog. He is also afraid of trash bags, he hates the noise they make when you are trying to open them. They both have to be in the bathroom with me when I take a shower.

TrueBlueKappa 08-03-2007 01:20 PM

My dogs (2 chihuahuas) hate loud noises! They chase the vacuum cleaner around, barking and biting it.

The older dog sits at the window all day long and barks when anyone walks down "her" street.

SWTXBelle 08-03-2007 02:40 PM

I had a horse who was afraid of white butterflies. But only white ones.

DaemonSeid 08-03-2007 03:06 PM

My dog:

- barks like a maniac when we come home and alarms our car

- likewise does it when someone is at the door, hence he is a canine doorbell

- is afraid of a large grey exercise ball

- will not drink out of other water bowls...he HAS to have his own

My cat:

- hates being picked up

- will find the most innopportune time to want to be rubbed however.

- 'plays' with her food

- will not eat moist food.

both are afriad of vacuums

both have a fave spot at the top of the stairs to sleep ( I swear I think they are plotting my downfall when I see them together)

both will practically run you down to go lay out on the deck

both follow me around the house.

mine too! Of course this happens after i've gotten good and comfy in bed. he runs like something is chasing him, and that freaks me out because, well, arent animals more in tune with the spirit world? LOL. i'm always thinking there IS something chasing him that i just cant see!

i have taught my cat the phrase "special private time." When i walk into the bathroom he follows me until i say those words, then he turns around and waits for me on the other side of the door. If i don't say the phrase, he will meow and scratch at the door until i come out!

Also, my cat will not eat unless you play with his food. you have to shake the bowl around and convince him that everything's safe and yummy.

adpiucf 08-03-2007 03:44 PM

I thought of another one: my dog likes to drink out of the bathtub faucet. She will lick the bottom of the faucet until you turn it on. If you try to ignore it, she starts getting more forceful -- you can hear the shower tab at the top of the faucet rattling up and down. It's so annoying, but there is one plus-- she loves water and loves bath time.

Just make sure you kick her out of the bathroom before you take a bubble bath, or you will have company. It's happened before.

icelandelf 08-03-2007 04:05 PM

Our cats (we have two)

hate being picked up (unless it's to carry them to bed.)

both like to sleep on our heads

only eat dry food

they think the squirrel on the porch is in league with satan and tell him so every chance they get through the window :D.

My dog HATES people hugging. She jumps on you, barks, howls, everything until you stop.

She also doesn't like when people singing in high-pitched voices.. we discovered this during The Sound of Music.

She apparently hates when people run too, she follows you and tries to sweep your leg and nip at your ankles.

OMG my dog is like that too, except it extends to even touching...or THINKING of touching.

If I extend my arm out to touch my mom or dad, martini (my dog) will go CRAZY, trying to attack me. We think he's just asking for attention b/c once you acknowledge him, he stops.

My dog also HATES the leash. He cringes, cries and screams bloody murder if you try to take him outside on a leash. He used to be fine, but now that I came back from school he's gone crazy.

texas*princess 08-03-2007 07:13 PM

After I'm done using them, I always MUST put the vaccume or the broom away. If I don't, my dog will growl and bark at them.

She also doesn't find it acceptable when I'm on the phone and not paying attention to her. She will throw a hissy fit until all of the attention is back on her.

justabeachbrat 08-03-2007 10:29 PM

My rescued from the pound, fat, happy tabby cat thinks she lives at a 5-star restaurant. She will only eat Fancy Feast, ground, not flaked, broiled, and only certain ones, Salmon and Shrimp, Liver, Chicken. Cheap brands no way, she'll sit and stare me down with that one green eye. I have to drive across town to get it at a good price. Someone said to leave the cheaper stuff out, that she would eat it. No, she went for turkey in my sandwich, instead. And it's no to milk, but likes cream cheese.

Does she have one green eye and one other-colored eye, or does she have only one eye to begin with?

honeychile 08-05-2007 04:12 PM

My dog won't eat in the kitchen! You can give him a piece of the finest steak, and he will take it out into either the living room or dining room to eat it - the kitchen is obviously beneath his standards! He will also only drive out of a drinking glass, not a bowl, but I think he just doesn't like to get his ears wet.

Does anyone else's dog absolutely despise the mailman or any other deliveryman?

ETA: Forgot to add that he will not step one dainty paw out of the house without a lease and a bodyguard! Can't put him on a leash in the front yard, unless you plan to stay with him. It's as if he knows he's small enough to be easily dognapped - which sadly happened to a friend of mine recently. :(

My cat has to eat her wet food between 4 and 5 a.m. every morning. My cat is almost two years old and this new routine started about a month ago. She has a very freaky way of waking me up: I always sleep on one side of my bed. My cat will stand on her two back legs and reach out one of her paws and tap my face or my arm until I wake up. It scared the crap out of me when it happened at first, but now I expect it. I don't know how she figured that out. I just wake up every morning to the feeling of a paw repeatedly tapping my face. Actually, it is really cute.

I would snap her out of this routine, but I am so tired at 4 a.m. I just give her the food so she will leave me alone.

Scandia 08-05-2007 05:42 PM

My dearly departed Doxchi hated motorcycles and would cry when people were packing because he feared we would leave him behind.

My family's Chihuahua does not like being outdoors when it rains and starts crying to be let inside.

cheerfulgreek 08-06-2007 02:16 AM

Whenever I place my finger on my dog's nose, she tries to move it away and then she finally puts her paws over her nose. lol, it's so cute.:p

My dog does the SAME thing, but it's only when it's me, or my two roommates but not the third roommate... I think he's trying to protect us, and we spend the most time with him.

My dog is under 10 lbs and I swear, I think he thinks that he's a rotty or some other big attack dog, b/c he just goes CRAZY when the mailman comes or any delivery man, and they get soooo scared, i feel so bad but it IS kind of funny:o

I was told that was the proper way to correct a small dog's behavior. We just have to say, "You'll get nosed!" and said small dog quits whatever he was doing!

33girl 08-07-2007 12:01 PM

My cat hates plastic grocery bags when someone else is holding them. If he's playing in the bagfull of them, though (I keep them on hand to line small garbage cans), that's OK.

macallan25 08-07-2007 01:12 PM

My chocolate lab hates riding in the backseat. He loves his hunting dox box in the bed of our ranch trucks, but he hates the backseat in my tahoe. If he is in my car with me he has to ride in the passenger seat. This makes many people mad.

My Brittany Spaniel hates it when Sage (the lab) is on my bed. She's a jealous one...even though there is plenty of room for both. They will fight. It's hilarious.

The next time someone gets mad about the dog getting the front seat, just tell them that the dog has been around longer than they have and can't be as easily replaced (of course, don't say that to your parents or anything).

I told my now-husband that when we first started dating and he told me he didn't like cats (and wanted me to get rid of mine). We now have 3 cats.

THIS IS my daughter. She won't say more than three sentences to me, then when I pick up the phone, all of a sudden, its "mommy, I need...."

My dearly departed Schnoodle would NOT go outside in cold weather without her sweater. She also did not like the rain: she'd turn in a circle to be let out, go outside, do her thing (no sniffing nor looking for a specific area) and come right back in.

AlwaysSAI 08-07-2007 02:16 PM

I <3 this thread.

Unlike most of you, I don't have a dog or a cat. I HAVE TWO CHINCHILLAS!

They are really fury squirmy animals and when I get them out for free time sometimes they get away from me. As soon at I'm out of sight, Bronco goes into the kithchen and squeezes himself under the dishwasher. I've grown so tired of taking it apart to get him out. Bronco also has a favorite spot in the bathroom (aka: Chin play room). Under my sink, apparently there is a gap that they can jump into which leads to the space under the cabinet. Basically, one second Bronco is there beside me on the floor and in a split second he's gone. As soon as I figured it out, I just covered the hole with wrapping paper.

I used to leave my rug in the bathroom during playtime until I figured out what they were doing. The little buggers used it as their toilet. They would go to the far corner of the rug, stick out their little butts and pee. Now I just take the rug out with everything else.

And, Thunder, oh Thunder. He is more adventurous of the two. He has a routine. He jumps onto the toilet seat. Then, he uses his front paws to unroll some toilet paper. AND THEN! He jumps onto my counter top and runs around until everything is on the floor.

I love them. They actually had to go to the vet today. It looks like they are allergic to the new dust I was using...poor boys. :(

I think it makes many people angry because its not the safest place for your pet if you got into a wreck. But then again, neither is the back seat, and thats where my dogs sit. :)

sorry, i've been moving and unpacking. well, moving and now, looking at boxes needing unpacking...

kitty....she has one eye. she was injured somehow, before i got her at the pound. the shelter said she may have been abused, which is stunning, because she is a loving cat. She also lost a tooth up front, and sticks her tougue out,

kitty has been cross country twice, been to new orleans, texas, wyoming, montana, and oregon.

ZTAngel 08-08-2007 09:20 AM

My dog hates the vacuum cleaner. He'll chase it around but as soon as I get close to him with it he'll run and hide under the bed.

Also, he hates when my husband and me don't pay attention to him. If we're cuddling on the couch, he'll snuggle right in between us. When we give each other a kiss, he'll jump up and try to get in the middle of us. He will also whimper if I'm not petting him while having a phone conversation. He's kinda annoying actually. :)

This is going to be your ultimate test for finding the woman of your dreams. Marry the one who thinks this is awesome rather than annoying. Trust me. :)

Hey, S, are you volunteering?;)

LOL

LPIDelta 08-09-2007 08:53 PM

Ok...I just spent the last half hour watching my dog walk fastly in circles around the yard--looking up in the air like he is chasing something but there's nothing there. He gets in a trance...and sometimes will keep going until you break it.

He's been doing this for months...and I can't figure it out. Its funny mostly, but now I am starting to wonder if he is hearing voices or seeing things. Anyone see anything like this in your pets?

Incidentally, I LMAO reading some of these peeves...there are some crazy pets out there.

Educatingblue 08-09-2007 09:46 PM

My dog hates anyone at the front door, ringing the door bell, or in front of the house. She really hates the garbage man and goes out on the porch and barks at him until he is out of sight.

MayFlowerSister 08-11-2007 12:58 AM

My cat hates it when she can see the botem of BOTH her food bowls (two cats) The odd thing? When I fill one of the bowls up she eats out of the half empty one.
