Favorite Alums
Ok, who do you think is the coolest cat to ever grace the halls of your fraternity or sorority? For me, I would have to say Col. Sanders (KFC) and Jeremy Pivens (entourage).
|
Georgia O'Keefe, definitely. :)

Yes. :) Google her, she did a lot of flowers. (Let's not even get into the sexual implications of that, though.)
|
Kristen Chenoweth - Tony-award winning actress -"Wicked" is probably her most famous musical.
Laurel Clark - Challenger shuttle astronaut Cloris Leachman - she's so good at comedy or drama. |
the wife of the MGM founder was a Phi Mu...that's why MGM's mascot is a lion....rando...
|
Benny Boom, the music video director, is an Alpha.
I think he is the best example of the "coolest cat" to be an Alpha. :D |
Lisa Frank, for sure. It's funny to imagin that as an elementary school student all my school supplies were covered in those horses puppies and unicorns and now I know just why there were so many unicorns on her designs.
|
I love Julia Louis-Dreyfus! I used to think Seinfeld was just something to watch when nothing else was on (I think it was because I was too young when there were still new episodes coming out and I never *got* the humor) but now I absolutely love it, and I know that's at least partially due to the fact that my DG sister is so friggin' funny! The same can be said for Everybody Loves Raymond and Patricia Heaton, who plays Debra (Ray's wife).
|
I'll go with somebody who is not famous, but makes me really proud to be a Gamma Phi Beta: Betty Quick, the current NPC President. I've met her on several occasions and she is just the most delightful, poised, intelligent and thoughtful person and has a sense of humor too. I can't think of anyone better to represent all NPC women!
|
Old School: Harrison Ford.
New School: Paul Rudd. Ultimate Pimp: James Dean. |
Steven Speilberg
DJ Skribble Matt Woodruf hahaha Rob Courdry, from the Daily Show |

Didn't James Dean NOT get initiated, or blackballed or drop out during pledgeship? Not sure why, but it just stands out to me.
Anyway, for me, it's Sam Walton. You all know him... Quote:

Covering both viewpoints, I'll say Judy Woodruff (Omicron chapter) and Nancy Grace (Delta Theta chapter) are possibly the most well known, although Jean Smart (Alpha Theta chapter) is probably my favorite!
|
My favorite would have to be Kimberly Williams Paisley (from Father of the Bride fame...and also married to Brad Paisley).
My mom likes the fact that Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine from Star Trek) is an Alpha Phi! And of course from my high school days---Maile Misajon! I loved her in Eden's Crush :D |

Since most are choosing show biz folks, how about these Delts...

Are you for real? I didn't know that! No wonder MGM is my favorite casino! :D I can't remember her name, but she was in Sister Act 1 &2 and played Aunt March in Little Women. I can't remember her name and can't find anything on our "new and easy to use" website. I can't even find the list of famous alums. Yay. But she's my favorite. |
For APO, I'll go with Bill Clinton, Bob Love, and Carson Kressley. :D
|
My favorite Chi Omega alumnae are Harper Lee (author of To Kill a Mockingbird) and Pat Summit (women's basketball coach at the University of Tennessee).

My father. University of Texas, SAE Alum 1976.
End Thread. |
Lets see...
Neil Armstrong: First man on the moon William Bankhead: because the picture of him in our manual rocks (oh, and he was Speaker of the House) Benjamin Harrison: former President of the US, and my chapter Fred M. Vinson: former congressman, Sec. of the Treasury, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Frank Lloyd Wright: architect |
Favorite DZ Alum
My favorite DZ alum was a woman by the name of Vee Toner. She was a member of my chapter at Pitt and graduated in 1927. She was famous in the athletic world as a Swimming and Diving official at the Olympics and the Pan Am games back in the 1950's and 60's and as one of the first female judges at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
She is listed on the DZ website as one of our famous alumnae, however she is special to me because I got to meet her and spend time with her when I was a collegiate. Ms. Toner would show up at our sorority suite on home football Saturdays outfitted from head to toe in Pitt blue & gold regalia. It also remember her carrying a handbag made out of an NCAA football! She was a very vivacious, funny, and entertaining woman and we enjoyed having her in our company, even though she was probably nearly 70 at the time. She died in 1995 and has gifted much of her estate to the Pitt athletic and band departments. She was a very dear character to remember. |
Kappa Delta
Claudie Kennedy: US Army's first female three star general. Very interesting woman, from an amazing KD Chapter (Alpha Delta at Rhodes College) and excellent leader. Kim Ryan: VP of Collegians. I worked for her at the headquarters. She is so down-to-earth, friendly, and focused. Patricia Polito Miller: One of the Vera Bradley founders. I wish I would have come up with it! Besides the fact her patterns are beautiful, Miller is an admirable businesswoman and founded the Vera Bradley Breast Cancer Foundation. |

Her name is Mary Wickes (R.I.P.) and she was a phenomenal actress who played the "crotchety fiesty (and in her later years, old) woman " in many Hollywood classic! Her career spanned several decades and I remember TCM doing a special tribute to her that I watched simply because I knew that she was sister of Phi Mu. She received a degree in political science from Washington University in St. Louis and was encouraged to act by a prof. She was featured in "I Love Lucy" and understudied for the role of the Wicked Witch in "Wizard of Oz". She payed Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act I & II. She never married and died at age 85 prior to the release of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in which she was the voice of a gargoyle. |
......follow up.........I'd actually have to say Boone Pickens is one of my favorites. Awesome guy. Good business partner and friend of dad. Awesome bird hunting on his ranch.
|
Ellen Janeway Brothers - President of American Girl and Executive Vice President of Mattel
Margaret Moffat Toy - Founder of “Meals on Wheels” program Millie McWilliams Jeffrey Political activist and president of Michigan Women’s Foundation; founder and chairman of the Women’s Political Caucus; Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, 2000; Alpha Gamma Delta Distinguished Citizen, 1995 |
Actually, I have a follow up, too.
We have all listed famous people becasue that's what a thread like this expects I suppose. The truth is that I have two other favorite alums. One is Chauncy "Spike" Frisbee, a graduate of our former University of Colorado chapter in the late 1940's. I have yet to meet anyone who is more dedicated to the Fraternity. Another is Larry Swanson, who graduated from Washington State University probably sometime in the late 1950's. He was (probably still is) our chapter advisor at the University of Northern Colorado. He took that position after our chapter at Wyoming folded. He has won the Venable Award as outstanding chapter advisor in our Western Plains Division. Both men are members of our Distinguished Service Chapter. There are also a couple of deceased brothers that I greatly admired -- men who gave freely of their "time, talent and treasure" as they say and who, to me, embody the spirit of our brotherhood. |
Don Knotts and Cheech Marin.
|
For us, I would have to say:
Andy Griffith and Mr. Rogers (Yes, I thought Mr. Rogers was corny was when I was a collegiate, but as I got older he just got cooler and cooler to me.) Quote:

Leo the Lion predates MGM -- it was the logo of Goldwyn Studios before the merger with Metro and Mayer that led to MGM. Leo was first used by Goldwyn in 1916. The records say that Leo was designed by Howard Dietz, who was director of advertising and publicity for Goldwyn (as well as a lyricist and librettist). He was a journalism graduate of Columbia University, which has a lion as a mascot, and it has long been speculated that the Columbia lion served as his inspiration for the MGM lion. |
My favorite alumnae of my organization is my big Melissa and my pledge sister Ana. They are amazing. I also have some truly amazing runner ups as well. I also admire the women who keep the alumnae chapter running and active. (How do you like them apples!)
P.S. -I guarantee you one of them will be famous soon! (LOL) |

My Fave ZTA Alum
My Favorite ZTA Alumna is Betty Buckley (Gamma Psi). She won a tony for her role, Grizabela, in Cats. She was also on 8 is enough.

2 of my favorite were from my chapter:
Lou Holtz, Kent State '58 - Coach of Notre Dame Football 1986-1996. Won the College Football National Championship in 1988. Thurman Munson, Kent State '69 - First captain of the Yankees since Lou Gehrig, Rookie of the Year in 1970, a seven time All-Star and he was voted the American League MVP in 1976. He is the only Yankee ever to win both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards |
