who's your fave?

Does anyone else find themselves at work (or at school) needing there to be a juicy topic on here that they can contribute to? As a GC-aholic, I definately do!

So here's what I wanna know. There's all this talk in the greeklife forum about which stars of movies, tv and sports are Greek. So, along that line, but ignoring the greek part, who is your favorite star, (musician(s), actors etc) and, similarly, who do you think has no business being so popular(i.e. has no real talent and yet is loved by millions)?
No fighting tho! People with no talent are popular for a reason. Some people actually like them! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

Ben Afflec is my favorite because I read some where we have the same birthday. I don't know if he is Greek or not.

prospectiverushee 02-16-2001 02:21 PM

My favorite musician at the moment is Dave Matthews and I'm thrilled that he is playing a Jazz Fest this year. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif It will be my first time seeing him live! God I love that man, if he ever breaks up with Ashley(his wife) I will be there to comfort him(he,he)

The person that has no business being so popular(and I'm going to get flamed) is Britney Spears. Is she an alto or a sorpano? And if she thinks the only way for her to gain fans is to rip off her clothes at a drop of a hat, then something is seriously wrong

I totally forgot to answer that question myself.
I too am in love with Dave Matthews. No dates in Toronto for his tour yet tho
http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif . I'm still hoping.

As for the person who has no talent....please, no one yell. He's not hard on the eyes but I just can't take Keanu Reeves seriously. Boy just can't act.

Thought I'd add my two cents seeing as how I started the thread!

I won't flame you girl - 110% total agreement!

I will always love Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Meg Ryan for the same reason -- no matter what role they play, they make you really feel the character. How many women can watch Pretty Woman and not really feel like a princess even from our living room? Mel Gibson is just a great character always - Ransom - he made you feel the desperation. Tom Hanks - you name it!! Meg Ryan - especially in Addicted to Love -- you just feel all their roles!

My main beef with most greek celebs is that they could be doing so much for our philanthropies, but no one seems to want their name attached to greek letters. They could really expose some of the stereotypes if they would promote our org's and what our philanthropies are. There are people who are watching and hanging on every word!!

Has no business being so popular(i.e. has no real talent and yet is loved by millions)?

In the spirit of Jeopardy:
Who is Marshall Mathers (alias "Eminem")?

My opinion is that he's a nincompoop , but hey, to each their own.
He's in minute #14 of his alloted 15, I figure.

After pondering this question long and hard, this is what I came up with!

Muscian: Although I don't own many of her CD's I'd have to say Madonna. WHY? Because she's always reinventing herself and it appeals to the masses at one point or another. Just awesome!

Actor: Hubba Hubba Nicholas Cage! WoW! He's just scrumptious and a really good actor! I don't think he's got a lot of depth to many of his characters, but given the right movie he does well the majority of the time!

Actress: Julia Roberts! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gifCan we just say that women has CLASS!?!?! Everything about her is fantabulous (IMHO). Beautiful red hair, a great laugh, wonderful poise...just AWESOME (plus she has REAL talent).

No business being popular: Even though I sorta like him, I'm gonna have to say Tom Green http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif. He's SO stupid and that's why he's funny. But in my opinion almost ANYBODY could get away with doing dumb crap on the streets. It's just that somebody pays him to do it on national tv.
Oh...and I just thought of one more. This person I belive should be flipping burgers. HOWARD STERN! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif What a GEEK! I hate him SO much. No one makes me MORE angry than him! He's sexist and arrogant! He thinks he should be laid by every beautiful woman that walks into his studio! Personally I wouldn't touch him with a 10,000 foot poll!

I think that Russell Crowe is too sexy to be alive. Not only that - he's a really wonderful actor. As for females, there just aren't any really strong female leads right now. Francis McDormand from Fargo and Wonder Boys is really great, but she doesn't get a lot of credit. I think Angelina Jolie is extremely talented - she's just a little weird.

Those with no talent - I could go on for days. Every teeny-bopper type sugur coated sweetie on the freaking radio needs to realize that they are horrible examples for young girls. "I'm popular becuase I'm beautiful and can take off my clothes!" As for all the boy bands - can anyone say New Kids on the Block??? Movie people that have no talent in films are Leonardo Dicaprio, Wynona Ryder, Jennifer Lopez, and (I agree) Tom Greene. Oh - and all the Friends. Yak!

I kind of disagree with the Keanu thing. He is really talented at standing there and looking serene (or stoned). Whoa.

I can't decide if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me!!! But refer to the Sweet November thread. I'm not suprised. Charlese Theron is a great actress. The story line must be good because it is a remake. That leaves only one person to ruin the movie...Mr. Reeves.
I thought of someone else that has no business being famous...Brenden Fraser. That guy is either pigeon holed into lame movies or he keeps getting those scripts because that's all he's good at. Hard to know I suppose. Didn't he do a movie with Pauly Shore? That would explain so much vis-a-vis being pigeon holed. Once you've been in a Pauly Shore movie, there's no turning back. So, I guess we can add him to my list also http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif .

LOL
I was the first one at the store this morning. Was the first one there to get my hands on the CD. Got in as much listening as I could before I had to go to work. I just closed my eyes and sat back and enjoyed every note. I think it's his best disc yet http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif . Man, I love him! Any other DMB fanatics out there???

Leslie,
I can relate!
I actually got my hands on the CD a few weeks ago... I know I know, but I've worked in the industry for YEARS to get those connections! ha ha

I love the CD too. Esp. Angel and Space Between.

Check out Napster if you haven't TONS of early 90's bootleg DMB shows there from when they used to play in and around Charlottesville VA.

I was the one of the first one's at midnight last night to get my hands on the CD. (a record store close to campus was nice enough to have a midnight sale just for me) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I kind of undecided about what I think about the new album. So far my fav song is Fool To Think. By the end of the week, I will practically have that song memorized(he,he)

Hey check out the current edition of Rolling Stone. Dave's on the cover and it has some dates for the summer tour in it. The three shows I want to go to are May 5(Jazz Fest in New Orleans, also the weekend before finals), May 11 in Houston(the weekend finals end), and July 15 in Dallas(two days after my b-day) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

The new cd is really different than his old stuff. it's weird but i like it. the rolling stone article you spoke of explains why it's so different. don't know if you read the article but it's a bit disturbing. it actually upset me to read. but it's a great article. pick it up if you can.

Sorry to interrupt all this DMB talk, but no one has mentioned my favorite: Jimmy Buffett!

I am a *HUGE* Jimmy Buffett fan. I'll go for weeks where its all I listen to. I've only seen one of his shows live but it was amazing. If you haven't heard much of his stuff other than Margaritaville or Cheeseburger in Paradise, you're missing out on a lot. He's a great songwriter, and some of his best songs are not his big hits.

As for someone who I don't understand their popularity, I'd go with Eminem. I don't think he's talented, I think he's just violent and messed up. He portrays a really bad image and sets a very bad example to people, especially with his attitude towards women.

HELL YES! - Buffett's always been one of my favorites; i'll definitely agree that some of his best stuff isn't on "Songs You Know By Heart," either. Then i joined Kappa Sig, and now's he's my brother - which, hey, that's pretty sweet too. "Weather's here, wish you were beautiful" is a great song, also the duet version of "mack the knife" he did with Frank Sinatra is phat. plus fruitcakes, well i could go on forever - but buffett's amazing.

I'm totally not judging, cause really, i don't know any jimmy buffet songs. But for someone who doesn't know any jimmy buffet songs, i gotta tell ya, 'fruitcakes' is a pretty hilarious name for a song. Sorry. Hadda lol at that one. But i'm sure it's a great song.
I agree about the eminem thing mentioned in two previous posts. he's a loser. (sorry for anyone who likes him).

I saw this great movie yesterday. Even though it had a slight depressing theme. Its called "Enemy at the Gates". The only person I recognized was Ed Harris but I loved the girl in it. Rachael Weiss I think. It was about the Russians fighting for Stalingrad back in WW2 with the Germans. It was a bit graphic but I thought It was great overall and had some romance too http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I plan on seeing that new movie with Ashley Judd but I forget what its called. Its sort of a romantic comedy and looks pretty good.

Jumping in on the Jimmy Buffet thread...yeah, it is cool as hell to have him as a brother...I've gotta put in my vote for his version of "Mack the Knife" with Sinatra...doesn't get any better than that. And of course, there's "Volcano" and his cover of "You Don't Always Get What You Want"

OK...just had to add my two cents.

My favorite musician...DAVE MATTHEWS. He's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Gorgeous and TALENTED!!!! I can't wait to see him. 1 MONTH!!!!! I'm soooo excited.

I also love Janet Jackson too. I think she's extremely talented and absolutely beautiful. I saw her velvet rope tour when she was in New Orleans and it absolutely blew me away. She's an amazing performer.

Movies--I'm all about Russell Crowe at the moment. I know he's supposed to be a bad boy and he acts like he's got a stick up his butt sometimes but he's sooo incredibly HOT. I also loooooove Julia Roberts. I'm so glad she won the Oscar this year. My all time favorite male movie star would have to be the absolutely adorable TOM CRUISE....especially back in his TOP GUN days. But hey...he looked really good at the Oscars too.

MOVIES; at the moment, I am ALL ABOUT HUGH JACKMAN. GOD, could he be more gorgeous? Sigh. I think not.
