ClassicBeauty's Rush

Hey guys! Well, I figured I should go ahead and make my own thread for rush. I'm rushing at some school as a freshman here in a few weeks with a competitive rush. Now you'll get to see what's going through a PNM's head in the weeks leading up to rush.

Right now, I'm worried about getting all my recs. I sent all the packets needed to the local alumunae association in town. I'm just super worried that they won't be able to obtain the recs I need or that the chapters on campus won't take those recs seriously because I may not personally know the person. I only have recs for 3-4 sororities on campus that are personal. I'm trying to get my mom to ask her friends, but she keeps putting it off and I only have a few weeks left.

smiley21 07-17-2007 01:55 PM

Yay, a current day rush thread! :p

As far as recs go, you need to tell them that the deadline is coming up quickly. You need to stay persistent. Good luck! :)

KSUViolet06 07-17-2007 01:57 PM

Oh thank goodness. A current rush thread.

Ocalagirl 07-17-2007 01:58 PM

I know! I thought these would never come, but I checked my calendar and a lot start in the next four weeks!! Countdown, ladies:)

FSUZeta 07-17-2007 04:42 PM

contact your mom's friends yourself.

Thank you, FSUZeta! I hate getting calls from friends/parents of students asking me if I can write a rec for Suzie PNM. Why can't Suzie call me herself?

ClassicBeauty, I'm excited about our first current thread of the rush season!

ClassicBeauty 07-17-2007 05:56 PM

oh! I thought we weren't allowed to talk to alumunae too!

honeychile 07-17-2007 10:39 PM

If it's a little difficult to approach alumnae who you don't really know, go with your mother for that personal touch. BUT, make sure you do the talking!

Let them see that you are intelligent, poised, and talented - consider it practice for when R really starts!

Edited To Add: Best of luck to you!

twinkle555 07-17-2007 11:58 PM

I'm so excited for you Classic!!....also excited to read your story ;) Good luck m'dear!

:D

tinydancer16 07-18-2007 09:22 AM

Best of luck to you! Can't wait to read your story :D

IlliniMeg 07-18-2007 02:21 PM

Best of luck to you Classic Beauty!!

Just remember to keep an open mind, through it all - it's very hard when you first get on campus and you hear things from your dormmates!! And most of all, just be yourself!

And thank you for documenting your story - I'm excited to hear what happens!

AlwaysSAI 07-18-2007 02:49 PM

GOOD LUCK! GOOD LUCK! GOOD LUCK!

thetaprincess 07-18-2007 04:34 PM

Good Luck. I hope you enjoy your expierience. Have fun. Good Luck!

ClassicBeauty 07-19-2007 07:51 PM

Thanks you guys! Reading your words of encouragement really calms me down a little. I do have a question though since I mentioned the rec thing in my first post. As people who have been on the other side of recruitment, do you guys look down on girls who's only recs is from the alumnae association/a person who doesnt personally know the girl?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Unless the alumna indicates on the form that she doesn't know you personally, the sorority wouldn't know.

ufpiphi 07-19-2007 11:33 PM

Best wishes! Recruitment is an experience like no other!

ClassicBeauty 07-22-2007 05:39 PM

Update!
My mom finally asked her friends about the recs. So far two out of three of them have replied back! So I'm really excited about that. I need to ask a relative who knows many sorority women if she has asked them yet. I'm not one who enjoys being pushy towards others though.

Another question, (sorry guys) if we sent all of our packets to the alumnae association, do the women write the recs without our knowing who they are, or do they call you and ask to do it? I was reading LOVEinZTA's thread and she mentioned it. I haven't recieved any calls, so it's worrying me.

PS, I think I'm going rush shopping this week! YAY!

SWTXBelle 07-22-2007 06:28 PM

Alumnae may write a rec without calling you. Don't worry if you aren't getting calls - the alumnae either 1.) know you personally or 2.) are probably networking to find a sister who knows you or your family or 3.) are writing an information only. rec.

LampLady 07-22-2007 06:36 PM

Alumnae Recommendations

I don't know how other Alumnae Panhellenics do it, but ours in suburban Houston receives the Rush Packets/resumes from the PNM (potential new members) and distributes them to one alumnae member from each sorority represented on the campus the PNM is attending. This member is someone that her sorority has appointed/approved to write the recs for their area girls. We do not publicize who these alumnae members are and, generally, they do not contact the PNMs unless some required info is missing from the rush packets. Some of these members know the PNMs personally but, more often than not, they get the information for the recs from the Rush packets or may know some family members, friends, or have sons/daughters at the same high school. If you have turned in the requested information to your area Alumni Panhellenic, don't worry about it. They will take it from here and do everything they can to assist you.

ClassicBeauty 07-22-2007 07:04 PM

Thank y'all very much!

alum 07-22-2007 07:09 PM

This is a gentle reminder for PNMs to send thank-you notes to your rec. writers (if you know the name and contact info of the alum).

About 15 years ago or so our Alumnae Panhellenic used to hold a recruitment open house in the early summer for graduating high school seniors and their mothers. Panhellenic instructed the rushees that recs should always be secured through their mothers - that it was inappropriate to get them yourself! Maybe that was just a local custom or a sign of the times that has gone by the wayside.

honeychile 07-23-2007 10:46 AM

For some reason, the multi-quote feature wasn't working.

alum, nice suggestion to PNMs. It's even better when the PNM lets you know where she ended up!

irishpipes, I've heard of the same thing. I've wondered if it has anything to do with the higher incidence of divorce & remarriage?

Do we ever get to know who wrote us a rec? Like, does the alumnae association tell the pnms?

Anyway, time for the fun part. Well, at least until rush starts. What group of things should I code my sororities as? (Don't worry, I'm not posting my complete rush story until a couple of days after. Discretion is key.)

About recs: I would think if you contact the Alumnae Panhellenic after rush and ask to know who they are so you can write a Thank You note, they would tell you. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As far as code names, that is up to you. When I did I rush thread for my friend, I used couture fashion code names for the 7 groups on campus (i.e. Fendi, Gucci, Dior).

I've seen all types of code names (fruits, soft drinks, TV show characters).

ClassicBeauty 07-30-2007 04:18 PM

So, I figured I might go ahead and update this since the who recruitment board has been kind of slow the past couple of days.

I'm getting even more excited to rush! It's seriously DAYS away. I still haven't bought my clothes. I've been extremely busy buying stuff for my dorm and college and then shipping it off to school. I'm super nervous because I'm the only one from my high school going to U ____. Which a good reason why I'm rushing.

So, I haven't thought of a group of codenames yet. I was thinking classic leading ladies, or maybe I'll use characters from The Office, or celebrity mess ups (i kid), or countries i would like to visit.

Thrilling update, huh?

Actually, yes, it is thrilling! A lot of us are vicariously reliving our own R experience through the kindness of those of y'all who post your R thread! :)

twinkle555 07-31-2007 01:37 PM

yyyyeaaa!! GO CLASSIC!! im so excited for you!! good luck!

Britney
Lindsay
Nicole
Paris
Anna-Nicole

Wow, the list just goes on and on and on... ;)

Pick whatever "theme" you feel comfortable with... or just wait until recruitment is over and post your retro experience, using their real names.

Pike/PhiDeltmom 07-31-2007 09:28 PM

Classic leading ladies chosen by a ClassicBeauty sounds lovely!
GOOD LUCK!!

ClassicBeauty 07-31-2007 10:10 PM

You guys are too funny!

Guess what! I bought my sundresses that I need. I'm gonna go look for shoes and accessories tomorrow. I'm kind of worried that a lot of people will have one dress I bought. It's so cute though.

I've also decided on code names. YAY! I've chosen to do classic leading ladies because of my username.

Audrey Hepburn
Bette Davis
Doris Day
Elizabeth Taylor
Ginger Rogers
Grace Kelly
Judy Garland
Julie Andrews
Katharine Hepburn
Lucille Ball
Marilyn Monroe
Sophia Loren
Vivien Leigh

Question (yeah, another one)
How should my make up be done? I dont want to wear too much and come off as superficial

honeychile 07-31-2007 10:15 PM

Removing a post because people on painkillers shouldn't be allowed to count!

I love the Beauties' names! Go Marilyn Monroe!!

AU_ZTA86 08-01-2007 08:04 AM

As far as makeup goes, go light and natural. Of course too much can look superficial and somewhat trashy but also remember it's going to be REALLY hot - you don't want it melting down your face!!

LOVEinZTA 08-01-2007 10:04 AM

Well as much as I love Lucy and Audrey, I do think I'm going to have to root for Katharine!

And I just realized you asked a question about my thread earlier - I think my rec situation was quite different from what most PNMs experienced. The HS I went to was a very tight-knit community and all but 2 of my recs were written by people who had known me since I was in first grade. I really don't think most girls have their friends mothers all coordinating who was going to write whose recs!

princessjv 08-01-2007 11:52 AM

ooh Audrey Hepburn is my most favourite old-time actress ever so I'm rooting for her!!

JessLynn 08-01-2007 03:07 PM

What? No Ingrid Bergman? Casablanca has got to be one of my all time most favorite movies. Oh well, guess I'm going with Audrey.

ClassicBeauty 08-01-2007 04:11 PM

I know I know! There are so many other ladies that I would like to have used, but I only have so many sororities.

Audrey is my favorite too. I might need to change her so I dont play favorites lol.

OK, I'm gonna make my previous question more specific.
For eye make up, what would y'all recommend? Just use one natural shade on the lid and crease with upper eyeliner only. Or should I do the whole package (use a lid shade, crease shade, brow bone shade, etc shade and eyeliner around the eye)?

adpiucf 08-01-2007 04:35 PM

Whatever will not melt on your face AND looks normal for you.

Play with a few different looks this week and spend a few hours walking around outside in 80+ degree weather and ducking indoors for 20 minute intervals.

Seriously. Hon, it doesn't matter-- just go with natural make-up that suits your face and won't melt in the sun. Waterproof mascara is a girls' best friend.
