March Madness
For those of you out there whose school is playing in the NCAA tournament this year, how is your school doing?
Fortunately, the Fighting Illini did not succumb to the "upset fever" that has been running rampant the last two days. No problems whatsoever with Northwestern State this afternoon. Still a long way to go though... [This message has been edited by Alumnus who cares (edited March 17, 2001).] |
Unfortunately for my school, Hawaii (#12 in the region), they just lost to Syracuse (#5). They were just too much for us this time.
Still, winning the WAC last week left my state in pure euphoria. We haven't won the WAC in 7 years! Well, BU lost to traditional America East power Hofstra in the AE tournament (yeah that's really sarcastic), but at heart I'm still an Iowa Hawkeye - and the hawks won their first-round game over Creighton 69-56. It was sweet - especially because a few of the players for Creighton are from rival high schools back home, it's always good to beat them no matter what!

It would be great if we won the championship since Lute Olson, the coach, lost his wife this year to ovarian cancer. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif It was such a sad time for this town. The men's team at LSU is not in the tournement this year. It's been a very rough season that I would be glad to go into detail at a later date.
The women's team won their first round game against Arizona State. Next up Purdue. Anyway, I'm doing brackets on Yahoo and all the upsets are screwing me up. And who would have thought Hampon would have made it to the second round? As you can see I'm a HUGE basketball fan. My USC TROJANS IN THE ELITE 8!!! First time since 1954 for my "football" school! Love that we could have 3 Pac-10 teams in the final 8! I know it's not exactly March Madness or the NCAA but... Our womens team made it to the Final Four of the WNIT!!! Post-season games hosted on my campus quadrupled the size of attendance! Our girls have gone further than our men, and they meet New Mexico in the semis, the winner meets the winner of the James Madison/Ohio game! My little Indiana State University made it past the first round but Gonzaga was too much and lost. University of Connecticut men didn't make it at all but the UCONN women are doing awesome! P.S.- I was rooting for Univ. of Illinois too- when did you go to school there? My best friend went in the late 80's and was a Delta Gamma. |

LOL, I made a bet with my sister that Arizona would win over her fave team, Kentucky. I won!! Hopefully the Cats go all the way to win the whole thing!! |

I cannot even begin to tell you all how happy I am about them going to the championship game. Every win is so emotional. We have had signs around Tucson and Minneanopolis that say FOUR BOBBI with a U of A "A" next to it. Do you remember how great that '97 Championship game was?? How the 'Cats went into Overtime, and how the team had Mike Bibby and Miles Simon then? BTW, do you know what happened to those two? I know Bibby is, I think, in the NBA with Vancouver. I don't know what happened to Miles though. It was soo cool when we won in '97!!! Hehe, I called my sister during overtime and I demanded her to pay me even more (I had only betted her 5 bucks). She was a UCLA Bruin then! Ughhh, Duke gave us a great game today. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif But yeah, I could feel that it was over during the last few minutes, when the shots just weren't going our way! (Goaltending, losing the ball, etc...)
Shopgirl, and all U of A fans, I felt so sad when I saw CBS' interview of Coach Olson. He remained strong with his answers, but I could tell that he was very disappointed...but I am glad that the Arizona team has represented well! I was happy when Coach said, "I told them that they all had to be proud of themselves...they cannot hold their heads low, because they have played wonderfully." I wish Coach Olson and his team the best!!!! |
