OSU Sorority Girls Dancing For All To See

Watch these girls dancing... pretty impressive ladies!

banditone 06-25-2007 03:59 PM

Wow. Kinda looked like the Mens Club. Or Cabaret Royal down here in Dallas.

kathykd2005 06-25-2007 04:00 PM

Now, I didn't watch the entire thing, but it didn't look THAT bad...

BetteDavisEyes 06-25-2007 04:06 PM

It looks like they all did a great job but I really liked the Kappa Delta's dance and the Alpha Phi's.

cuteASAbug 06-25-2007 04:08 PM

Some of them were really impressive. From what they showed, I really liked AChiO's dance.

kathykd2005 06-25-2007 04:10 PM

A lot of these dances look heavily "Chicago" inspired. . .

They do something like this at UNCC near where I went to school called "Airband." They worked on their dances ALL YEAR!!! Sometimes, it seemed like even more work than Recruitment.

adpiucf 06-25-2007 04:54 PM

I think it's neat that they "aired" these-- don't see where these dances are any different than at any other school's homecoming or Greek Week skits.

I'm betting a lot of those girls have had dancing/acrobatics lessons since they were old enough to walk.

Definitely loved Alpha Phi's but that would be the song choice really.

Um...yeah, definitely didn't have this at our greek week AT ALL.

Reminds me of a good chunk of the hip hop/funk routines at State every year. I miss DT... :(

SoCalGirl 06-25-2007 08:55 PM

I think those are par for the course when it comes to those types of events. I think it was Alpha Chi that did the Janet Jackson song. We did the same choreography, straight from the video, for serenades! They're good but none were super impressive. The song that Alpha Phi used, Black Betty, is also used in commercials by a local strip club. ;)

In that case I aspire to be a stripper :D

SigmaNuHX766 06-25-2007 10:54 PM

Thinks to myself: *God, I don't ask for much, but please let the women on my campus start looking like the angels in this video next semester!*

Also, good choices on the music... "Can't get no satisfaction" and "Black Betty" got my vote for best songs chosen.

F antastic choreography!

minDyG 06-26-2007 03:18 AM

It's no wonder to me that DG won! :) Even though I am always going to be a little partial, they really did look the best to me. I liked the end of the DZ routine too though!

blackngoldengrl 06-26-2007 11:46 AM

Oh this takes me back (only a few years ago) to "lip sync" at my college. We had everyone who wanted to be in the dances practice hard core, at least a month in advance. It's amazing what you can do with a little time but a lot of dedication. We used to tell the new members, "we don't haze, we do lip sync!" :D It was a great time, bonding and laughing about muscle aches and bruises, and some of our sisters' lack of hips!

susan314 06-28-2007 01:47 PM

We had a similar event as part of Greek Week called "MTV Bar Night." Back then (mid 90s), the routines probably didn't get quite as suggestive as what some of these on the video were, but that's just part of the changing times...nothing in that video was any different than what most large college dance teams do at athletic events.

The weird thing is that Sigma Nu did the same song at our Kappa Delta Shamrock Showcase "Walk It Out" in the SAME style outfits (hoodies and camo pants) with one of the Kappa Deltas as our coach.

ΑΓΔSquirrelGirl 06-28-2007 10:07 PM

The only ones that were too suggestive to me were the Kappa's and KD's. That would definitely NOT fly here. But the dances were really well choreographed. DG's wasn't as modern and interesting to me BUT...they also looked like they were the most "together"...I didn't see a one of them miss a beat.

WVU alpha phi 06-28-2007 10:12 PM

We do this at my school during greek week and homecoming. It's a HUGE deal and winning airbands is a big selling point during rush because many girls coming through are former dancers and cheerleaders.

Thetagirl218 06-28-2007 10:34 PM

We have Lip Sync at my school. As for the dances in the video my favorite was DZ, and honestly I thought DG's was kinda boring, but thats just me. I also thought KKG and KD's were a little too much...

alum 06-28-2007 10:44 PM

From both an advisor and/or mom of active perspective, I would be complaining that nearly all of the chapters' renditions were too suggestive.

AlexMack 06-28-2007 11:28 PM

I don't know why but I had 'Pledged' flashbacks. If anyone has an imagination like mine, I mean.

Dancing/acrobatics lessons? None of them did any complicated moves.

PeppyGPhiB 06-29-2007 01:56 AM

The KD costumes were a little much...I swear the girl on the left in the opening shot must have given the audience a peek of something, her shorts were way too short.

A lot of schools do dance competitions like this - you can find them all over YouTube - but most of them aren't very good. The ones in this video were. You can tell most of them have dance training...it's the rhythm and sharpness, and they were confident on stage...they knew the routine. I should know, I studied dance for 12 years, and if you aren't a confident dancer, you don't do moves like that.

I liked Alpha Chi Omega and DG the best. Does Ohio State have a dance team? The DG performance looked like a dance team in action.

My school had dance competitions during Homecoming, but our big thing was Songfest. A whole week of performing mini-plays that are 15 minutes long. Each group writes a script based on a theme, then throws in song and dance. Complete with celebrity judges, an orchestra, and hosts that also have their own performances. It's quite the to-do every year.

Texas Beta 06-29-2007 02:54 AM

I'm sure glad Texas girls have a little more class.

James 06-29-2007 03:16 AM

More class than what?

The girls featured in that video.

Aspiring rap music video girls?

The only girls who should be parading around in provocative clothing and dancing like that are girls who give shows for dollar bills.

alum 06-29-2007 09:05 AM

I don't think these dance demonstrations reflect well on any of the sororities that participated. The only one that wasn't inappropriate was the Riverdance-type step. I'm certainly no prude but it wasn't like that in my day and that was when that awful Madonna was taking the US by storm

Well....it IS 2007. The only two that I was taken aback by were Kappa and KD. I did think those were inappropriate and the costumes even worse. The rest of them were pretty mild. At least they wore clothing.

SWTXBelle 06-29-2007 12:19 PM

It's funny - I was looking at the Kappa Kappa Gamma entry ("Meet Me at the Fair") at Baylor Sings (I think that's what it is called) on YouTube. Great set, cute costumes, some wonderful singing and dancing - nothing too provocative. Think Broadway instead of strip club. I'd rather GLOs compete in that way - I'm afraid the OSU-type dancing would cater to certain negative stereotypes.
And yes, I'm a dinosaur - I still think there are certain things a lady, and especially a sorority member, shouldn't do in public or as a representative of her GLO, and bumping and grinding is at the top of the list.
Of course, now I have "Gypsy" going through my head . . ."If you're gonna bump it, bump it with a trumpet!". LOL

We did that for a Broadway review in college...along with Hey Big Spender.

For Hey Big Spender, I wore a silver tube top, leather pants, a leather jacket, stilettos, and my hair was all feathered out. I expected my dad to make a comment. He did: "Hey, that outfit is flattering on you". Great dad, just what I wanted you to say about my "bar clothes".

I want to know how much Kappa spent on those outfits. Despite how you may feel about the fact that they're a little provocative, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, they look great. Kind of like something from a professional musical. It just looks like the KKG women had to front a lot of money for them. For all our dance-y type competitions (Greek week, etc.) we just like bought matching tank tops and maybe like a headband or something. I think my chapter sisters would have revolted if they had been asked to spend more than about $15 on a costume.

RutgersPIKE 06-29-2007 01:55 PM

that was nothing, the brothers of the Rutgers Pi Kappa Alpha all dressed up and danced for Lady Marmalade at our greek week

It's possible a parent or alumna member donated them, knows how to sew or can get discounts on costumes. At Iowa State we had something called Varieties, which was a musical competition. Costumes were extremely important to the show, and many looked professionally done, but there was a budget for each group. Most of the time somebody's parents had done the work or donated supplies.

PeppyGPhiB 06-29-2007 02:00 PM

DG's costumes looked like what many college dance teams wear at competitions or performances...even their hair looked like a dance team's, which is why I asked if Ohio State had a dance team.

ETA: As for what southern college girls wear while dancing in public, I think if you look online you'll find evidence that they're not necessarily "classier" than others in what they wear and how they dance. Can't find any photos of Texas' dance team (if it has one), but here are some photos from the college dance championships last year (broadcast on ESPN) of other southern schools:
