Retro Recruitment

It seems that there is interest so here goes:

I decided to stay at home for school. While I wasn't happy with it, at that point in my life it was the best choice for me. I knew nothing about Greek life, nor did I care much because I was going to school with a bunch of people that I knew from HS, including one of my best friends (at that point).

This school has 3 NPC chapters and 3 locals. I'm going to call them:

Coke
Sprite
Sunkist
Dr. Pepper
Cream
Root Beer

Silence was from Freshman Orientation until Pref night (about 3-4 weeks into school depending on the Jewish holidays) and locals didn't take part in anything with the nationals including silence.

While browsing the school's website over the summer, I found the website for Sprite and after looking at it, I signed the guest book and left them a way to contact me. One of the sisters, let's call her Jessica, e-mailed me and we started to talk through IMs and we talked all summer long. When school started she invited me to Sprite recruitment (they called it rush) events, and they constantly conflicted with other things going on in my life and I was unable to make them.

FSUZeta 06-19-2007 01:07 PM

yea for buttonz!

Buttonz 06-19-2007 01:40 PM

Jessica IMed me one night telling me that the next day was the last day to meet the girls for the semester, and she really wanted me to come.

I had no classes, but agreed, somewhat hesitantly, to meet her at school to go. So I met her and we walked to SUBO (the Student Union Building) were Sprite reserved a room. There were already about 20 people in the small room, looking back I'd say about 8-9 PNMs and the rest were sisters. Some of them (the majority of them I think) already met the sisters and had attended previous events). After telling us a little about Sprite, a bag of Skittles was passed around and we each took some. Then we went around the table and for every Skittle we had in our hand we had to tell them something about ourself. This lead to more talking and conversations on things that we said. There was one sophomore (if memory serves me correctly) and the rest of us were freshman.

Then we were able to ask them any questions we had about Sprite and they showed us some photo albums.

At the end of the two hours, we were told that we would be getting a call by the end of the next night to let us know if we received a bid or not.

Fun times!! :)

Buttonz - is your fall rush informal, as in it runs like COB?

The locals only do COB type rush, while the NPC's do formal in the fall and COB in the spring.

I guess it's safe to say that Sprite is a local, and not a national.

A-ha. Okay, now that makes sense. I was a bit confused too. Oh, and we know you didn't go Sprite or that would have been the end of your story. ;)

Anxious to hear more! :)

Buttonz 06-19-2007 06:41 PM

The next night I got a call from Jessica, letting me know that I have received a bid and if I wanted to take it, I should go ahead and be at Eva's house Saturday night.

I went to Eva's dressed nicely and I was ready to meet my future sisters. There were seven of us in the room, and they told us they will wait a few more minutes to see if the other two girls they were waiting for were going to show up. No one else showed up, so the seven of us were pinned.

We also found out our bigs that night. My big was Eva (the sister whose house we were at). I was glad, because we had a lot in common.

Within two weeks, one girl depledged. Two weeks later, I was ready to depledged. All of my pledge sisters and my pledge mothers (that is what they were called) begged me not to drop.

Sorry, it's a very rainy day, work is slow, and the diet coke hasn't kicked in yet. I need something to keep me awake and entertained!

Wow. Why were girls depledging so quickly?

twinkle555 06-20-2007 04:25 PM

whoa interesting twist!! more more!!

::reads KSUViolets post:: yea..why ARE girls dropping so quickly??

Buttonz 06-20-2007 05:37 PM

As to why girls were dropping so quickly...it's a little word that we all love to hate....h******. I'm sure you can all figure it out :)

~~~~~~~
Now back to my story:
After several long talks with both pledge moms, my big, and my pledge sisters, I decided to stay, thinking that it won't be to much longer till we were sisters and things would get better.
Boy, was I wrong. Two weeks later, I was ready to drop again. I was dreading going to anything related to Sprite at all, plus I was told I had my choice of attending my sisters sweet 16 (which I was planning) or going to a Sprite event. If I choose my sisters sweet 16, I would have to drop.
Once again, I was begged to stay by all. This time however, there was no changing my mind.
Less then three weeks later my former pledge sisters were initiated. It hurt to see them wearing letters, esp my former big, who I had class with, when she wore the set that all the bigs got for both themselves and their littles, because I knew I could have had them as well.
At the same time, I was happy, because I realized I could never be fully happy with these girls after everything. I also realized that I still wanted the benefits of sisterhood, but not with Sprite. So I started to do my own research, plus put together what I by then knew and have heard about the other groups on campus.
I knew for a fact that Root Beer was out. I wouldn't even consider them. So this left the following for me to check out:
Coke
Sunkist
Dr. Pepper
Cream
I wouldn't look anywhere until the spring (I wasn't even aware that there were possibly rules that meant I had to wait longer). Everyone did COB in the spring.
I can say that in the first week or two of the Spring Semester my former big told me if I wanted to look at Sprite and pledge again that it might be possible for me to do so
FuzzieAlum 06-20-2007 05:50 PM
Why was Root Beer not even under consideration?
Everything that I saw of them while I was pledging Sprite I didn't like at all, plus I knew they would never take someone like me.
Just out of curiosity - was Root Beer another of the locals?
(You don't have to share if it will spoil the rest of the details that you're planning to reveal. I was just curious whether your bad experience in one local made you uneasy about another.)
While I won't answer that (at least, not yet, not sure if I will tell in the end) I will say this: there were only 3 NPC groups and still 4 that I looked at, so there was at least one local that I was still looking at.
Yeah, there is a local around here that does that... They are not affiliated with the university which is how they get away with it.
I'll never understand it...but, okay.
And, I'm gonna root for DR. PEPPER!!!!! Well, basically because it's my favorite soft drink.
efcheerBB 06-21-2007 07:28 AM
I'm going to root for Dr. Pepper also!! This is fun :)
Buttonz 06-21-2007 02:06 PM
Although I briefly thought about it, I knew Sprite wasn't for me, and I had to look elsewhere.
I found the website for Cream, and the president told me that they started there winter class (they had a group of girls that they met that wanted to pledge at the end of the fall semester so they did a class at the start of the spring semester that they called their winter class) she would be more then happy to meet me with me if I was willing to wait for the Spring class to start. I met a few of them for lunch on campus one day, and while they were nice girls, I didn't click with them at all.
So this leaves it down to three:
Coke
Dr. Pepper
Sunkist
Sadly, the school that I'm talking about doesn't regulated Greek Life enough to care about it so it happens quite often. Everyone knows about it and knows why Sprite pledges avoid certain areas on campus, what it means when Root Beer's pledges are wearing certain things, etc.
So I'm guessing this means that Root Beer is another local.
Maybe a little bit of both :p
Buttonz 06-21-2007 07:20 PM
I started to talk to the President of Coke.
She was nice and invited me to a COB event that they were having that night (or was it the next night)? It was right down the street from where I worked so I was able to leave work and go straight there. There were about 8-9 sisters and one or two other PNM's. It was very relaxed and stuff and I had a good time, and I connected with one of the other PNM's.
Coke was having a party that weekend so we were invited. The PMN that I connected with, let's call her Jane, picked me up and we went. We both had a good time and left happy. We were told we would find out by the end of the week if we received a bid or not.
I had a feeling that I might be receiving one, I knew if I did get one I would take it. I got a call (the same night that Bush declared war on Iraq in fact) while I was watching the stuff with Bush and studying for my Poli Sci midterm (I'm shocked that I remember that!) telling me that Coke was not extending a bid to me. I was shocked, and called Jane who told me she just received a bid to Coke and she was accepting it. She was shocked as well that I didn't get one.
I remember hanging up the phone and being "Huh? What did I do wrong? Should I look at Sunkist & Dr. Pepper still, or just give up?"
I spoke to Jane several times throughout the rest of the week (she and I remained semi close through everything, she originally pledged and dropped Cream for the same reason I dropped Sprite) and she told me that I shouldn't give up....but I was still unsure.
Aww, :( But then haven't we all thought the same thing? The disappointments in these retro threads are so much easier to take than the current ones. We know you end up happy. :)
Buttonz 06-22-2007 07:55 PM
As stated, I wasn't sure if I should look at Sunkist or Dr. Pepper or just give up. After a few days of calming down, and a few more of really thinking about it, I decided that it couldn't hurt and I would always regret not trying.
I found the website for Sunkist and I talked to one of the sisters over AIM that night, and when she had to get off the computer, she asked if she could call me. Well, I hate talking on the phone, but I said yes. We wound up on the phone for over and a hour and a half, and made plans to meet up the next day on campus to talk more.
ClassicBeauty 06-22-2007 08:52 PM
I hope it works out! :)
Buttonz 06-24-2007 03:32 PM
I met up with the sister of Sunkist the next day, and wound up being introduce to a sister who just went alum at the start of the semester.
Conversation was good and she invited me out with a bunch of them that Saturday night, and I went. It wound up being myself, another PNM, her, and the president of Cream at that point. I had a great time, and went home tired, but happy.
I got a call the next morning asking me if I wanted to accept a bid to Sunkist, and if I did, I was asked to go down to school and meet them at the library. Now, I had to figure out if I wanted to say yes, or wanted to wait and possibly meet the sisters of Dr. Pepper. What to do?
twinkle555 06-24-2007 03:38 PM
oh man suspense!!! hmm i wonder what you did buttonz??
AlwaysSAI 06-25-2007 08:18 AM
I'm going to keep rooting for Dr. Pepper!!
GO DR. PEPPER!! GO DR. PEPPER!!
Although, I will admit that does put you in a bind. Don't some GLOs allow girls to defer their bids and officially accept it at a later time?? I've heard of that happening before.
Buttonz 06-29-2007 05:57 PM
After thinking about it, I decided that I would accept a bid from Sunkist, which is of course Sigma Delta Tau. Looking back on it, I am very glad I didn't wait because I wouldn't have fit in at Dr. Pepper at all.
In terms of who is who, I'll say that Dr. Pepper and Coke are the other two NPC's and the other three were local.
Funny note: Fall 2006 we had a girl come through FR and receive a bid to us who dropped Sprite the semester after I did for the same reason.
Leslie Anne 06-29-2007 07:59 PM
Yay Cream and SDT! Thanks for posting your story, Buttonz. :)
Glad you liked! I know it's different then most of them out there...but different could be good, right?
violetpretty 06-29-2007 08:28 PM
Mine was probably one of the more boring ones. It's good to see all different types of recruitment. Plus, the more stories we have, the more threads PNMs have to look at a school with similar recruitment styles.
Great story Buttonz!
Leslie Anne 06-29-2007 08:36 PM
Buttonz - different is very good!
Jess - Yours wasn't boring at all. And I agree that these threads aren't just entertaining, PNMs could really get something out of reading them.
Yours was not boring at all...just :( that SDT was cut so fast, lol!
Thank you :)
Crongrats!
So happy you found you home. Sorry you had to go through that awful local but hope you have some friends from there. Neat ending and so happy you love it. Wish you could get your sister to go through recruitment and be double sisters the would be chill. So glad you were brave enough to go through it again after that awful experience, I don't know if I could. Snaps to you! LOL
