Bar Exam

Studying for the Bar Exam is miserable.

UGAalum94 06-18-2007 08:20 PM

are you taking a class or just winging it?

Don't the classes make it a little more tolerable or is that where you are posting from now?

deadbear80 06-18-2007 10:11 PM

HERE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My freaking birthday is tomorrow (Tuesday) and you won't believe the amount of work that I did this weekend just so I could go out with friends and enjoy myself without thinking that I should be home studying!

What Bar are you studying for? I'm studying for the Illinois Bar (but I'm taking the BarBri class in St. Louis where I've been living for 4 years...thankfully...I've heard g-d awful things about taking the classes in Chicago in terms of stress levels and such).

DeltAlum 06-18-2007 10:59 PM

Good luck to you all.

My brother-in-law tells of the summer day he took the Ohio Bar in an un-airconditioned room at Ohio State.

Temperature 90+ and high humidity -- with some kind of loud band playing elsewhere in the building.

He passed.

Kevin 06-18-2007 11:47 PM

Good luck y'all.

This world needs more attorneys in it :)

I had something of the opposite experience -- around 100 outside, but the air-conditioner was running so low inside, and we were dressed for summer weather, that I remember actually blowing on my hands and rubbing them together to keep them warm.

Good luck to everyone taking the exam!

Tom Earp 06-19-2007 03:21 PM

I take the fifth and I am sure some will drink a fifth when it is all over!:D

The very best of luck.:)

Kevlar281 06-19-2007 08:29 PM

Good luck to you all. I just took my LSAT a week ago and I know how hard I studied for that so I don’t even want to think about what it’s going to be like studying for the BAR.

SigmaChiCard 07-23-2007 09:48 PM

The next 2 days

So, I'm sitting in my hotel, typing out sample essay answers....and the Bar exam is tomorrow morning...

here goes.....

Thetagirl218 07-24-2007 12:17 AM

I don't envy you guys, but studying for the GRE is not much better....

GeekyPenguin 07-24-2007 01:44 AM

Good luck to all our bar exam takers! You can do it!

Phimuteach 07-24-2007 08:42 AM

The BF is starting the bar today....I got up early and made him blueberry pancakes this morning. When this is all over on Thursday we're going out with friends and he's getting plastered (I told him I would be DD).

Then it will be pins and needles until he gets the results in November!

Still BLUTANG 07-24-2007 08:49 AM

best of luck to all the Exam takers this week! :)

SigmaChiCard 07-27-2007 05:17 PM

it's over. thank God. that was much worse than barbri or pmbr.

deadbear80 07-28-2007 12:38 AM

If you're talking about the MBE portion...I'm totally with you!

In Illinois at least, I thought the Essays and MPT worked out MUCH better than I thought.

A few of my friends (one of whom finished #2 in our law school class) agreed that there were questions on the MBE that were WAY out in left field that neither BarBri nor PMBR covered. Which hopefully means we ALL got them wrong :)

Phasad1913 07-29-2007 05:37 PM

I took the Texas Bar. It ended last Thursday and I am JUST now able to log on and check email, return phone calls, yada yada yada. My brain is still fried and I have been having trouble sleeping, STILL. For some reason the words Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress have been floating across my mind like a marquee for the past three months. But from what I have heard there have been many a bar taker who has tried to sue the Bar examiners and the state bars over the exam and alas, its still here!

Hurry up November.

Tom Earp 07-29-2007 05:50 PM

Hm, wonder how may bar examiners actually passed the bar the first time and could not make it as a Lawyer?

The best of luck!

Why does it take so long? Nov?

That feeling is going to last for a few more days. Use this time to try and relax. You'll get back to normal after this week.

Congrats!

I took CT and MA in February and passed both. If everything works out I'll never have to take another bar exam.

Are they typically reciprocal or do you have to take one for every state you're practicing/living in?

SigmaChiCard 05-28-2010 01:58 PM

You generally get reciprocity after 5 years of practice provided that your state provides reciprocity to the state that you are moving to. Most states provides reciprocity, although certain exclusions apply such as California and Florida (and possibly New York, but since it wasn't an issue for me [ie not 5 yrs in yet], I didn't bother investigating fully)

sounds like the PE and SE exams, lol.

And the RA (Registered Architect)! I'm filing in another state because I can get registered there easier than NY, and then filing reciprocity right away. I'll never practice in AZ!

I jumped ship on engineering before taking the PE, although I'm not sure electricals always take them anyway

AGDee 05-28-2010 04:08 PM

I wouldn't mind examining a bar in every state. That sounds kind of fun.

Drolefille 05-28-2010 04:10 PM

^^ Ultimate pub crawl?

NY has reciprocity with some states - I'll be able to waive in in five years. DC does as well; I think you have to attend a 2-3 day class in DC, however.

I was going to say, a lot of the engineering experts we use are PEs.

I give a lot of credit to anyone who passed that exam - from what I've heard it's ridiculous, with low passage rates.

most of the ones who serve as expert witnesses are PEs. i got the SE just to have some more muscles to flex. LOL.

civil and other discipline PE exams aren't too bad with pass rates of 60-80 percent pass rates.....but first SE exam has a pass rate of around 25-40 percent pass rate. the second one is around 50-60.

Maybe I'm thinking of the SE exam...people I've talked to were talking about the ridiculously low pass rates on one of the exams.

Thanks! Glad to be done and I'll have admission in two states by the end of June. My attorney job starts as soon as I get sworn in, so that's exciting as well.

So for the RA license, you have instant reciprocity? That's a great perk.

Well, that answers one question I had asked in a PM. Congrats!! You worked hard for it.

I'll still have to wait the minimum number of years worked before NY grants the license; I started the registration process in another state so I could start taking the exams (there are 7 total) now, while I don't have a ton of other obligations. Once I'm done with them and get the license in AZ, I just have to cool my jets until NY accepts the results.

I see a lot of co-workers my age and older start the process, but then they have kids or get married or their parents get sick, and it derails them for a while. I figured it was easiest for me to knock them out while I can still do all-nighters. :)

A ton of engineers in my office have taken the SE 5 and 6 times. :(

Kevin 06-01-2010 05:02 PM

Those of you with multistate licenses -- I took and passed the Oklahoma Bar in '09. I received an MBE score which qualifies me everywhere. If I wanted to get my license in Texas, isn't it true all I'd have to do would be sit for the Texas portion of the exam and the MBE?

How soon do you want/need the TX license? If you can wait a few years, you may be able to waive in without taking the exam, depending on the reciprocity requirements.

If you need it sooner, and your MBE score is high enough, then I think you are correct in that you can just take the TX essay portion. Not sure though - I know more about the process at this end of the country.
