Alumnus who cares 03-23-2001 02:07 PM

You mean, besides buying John Merrick's remains and fancy Dijon ketchup to go with the Kraft dinner?

Let's see...I'd pay off my student loans, pay off my parents' house, and buy myself a house or a condo. Then I guess I would save the rest and buy some mutual funds or similar lower-risk investments.

Billy Optimist 03-23-2001 02:35 PM

Buy a house, buy my parents each a car. Invest the rest in the stock market. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Especially now that everything is so cheap.

sigmagrrl 03-23-2001 02:52 PM

Buy a nice simple house in New England, go back to school, buy a car, and some new clothes. Save and invest the rest.
Now if it were more $$$, I would buy a penthouse in NYC and a beach house in the Hamptons or on Martha's Vineyard!

amycat412 03-23-2001 02:58 PM

buy a house/condo. pay off my student loans. buy my brothers new cars. pay off my parents house.

that would exhaust it right there. but then I'd have no bills and could use my salary to travel and shop!

I like this question! Even though a million dollars doesn't go as far as it used to http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif .

First, I'd pay off my credit cards. Then, I'd by a big pool table for the new condo I'd purchase. I'd buy my dream car bmw convertable boxter, and travel and see the world. I wanna win a million dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!

pbear19 03-23-2001 03:20 PM

Well, I know that this is not the popular opinion, but since I'm always very adamant about this stuff I guess I should just go ahead.

I wouldn't want a million dollars. I think maybe half a million tops, but no more. My opinion has always been that large sums of money lead to nothin but trouble with family and friends. If I had a lot of money I'd always be worried that people were only friends with me cause of the money.

I don't know. I know that it sounds goofy, nobody ever seems to understand why I wouldn't want a lot of money. But the thing is, I wouldn't mind a lot of money if I earned it over the years, I just would never want a large sum of money to be suddenly dumped in my lap.

Probably part of this comes from the fact that I knew a family who won a LOT of money with the lottery. They built this absolutely gorgeous house with everything. (Trust me, I've been in it, and it really was a mansion.) Well, a few years later they filed for bankruptcy and their teenage daughter who I had known had committed suicide. There could be a lot of reasons for her suicide, but when I knew her she showed none of the signs.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. (Not that I expect anyone to aggree with me! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif)

A million dollars is not THAT much money. I don't think it's enough to destroy a life.
I think a million dollars in 2001 will be able to buy you a bunch of the things you always dreamed of having (cool car, wicked vacation, no more debts) and leave you with enough to get yourself a decent pad. It's just not a life altering amount of money any more, IMHO.

I think people that get insanely rich really fast are only heading for disaster. I agree with you about the effects of insane amounts of money. But for a million dollars...I think it'll just make you a bit more comfy.

First I set up a trust fund for my two cousins (age 9 and 2) of 50,000 each so that they can use it for their college educations.

I'd pay off my student loans, save a little to invest and give the rest to my mother

If you know how to handle it, no amount of money can destroy your life.

Billy Optimist 03-23-2001 06:24 PM

I know what I'd do! If I had a million a million dollars, and assuming rush goes well next semester, I'd buy my brothers a house.

vanda 03-23-2001 07:50 PM

I would pay off all my bills so I won't have collectors breathing down my neck. I would also change my phone number because you know all those distant relatives will come out of the woodworks. I would buy my mother a house, get myself a condo, put some in sound investments and take my entire family on a vacation.

P.S. I always wanted a monkey! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

I'd do the same as pretty much most of you...

Pay off the Credit Cards, renovate the house, buy my mom the Lexus of her choice, by the BF his Dodge Viper, and build a house for my chapter.

If there's anything left I'd invest it wisely http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Leslie,
I have to disagree... one million dollars is a lot of money. I think people these days dont really appreciate the value of money and take advantage of it. If i had a million dollars, I would invest it in several banks and live off the interest. I really think that if you invest the money well, you can practically live off of it for the rest of your life.

If i had that kind of money, than yeah i would buy my parents, brother and i cars, go shopping, etc. but i wouldn't go to an extent of spending it all! Sure you could buy all these things and use all of the money up, but you shouldnt let money make you greedy like that.

Billy Optimist 03-24-2001 01:50 AM

yuppppp BUcutie. auf Deutch Sie sind richtig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I had a million dollars...

Okay yall! This one goes out to all you Bare Naked Ladies fans!
I posted this question in my own forum but I thought I'd ask it here too!
So, as the song goes...
If I had a million dollars, I'd be rich. But what would you do with a Million Dollars? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I would buy a radio station and play whatever I want (which of course, would consist of only cool music) to slay the dragon of corporate s@#$ radio that clogs the airwaves now.

pbear - there was a guy in Oil City ("city" is a very large misnomer) in northwest PA who won something like 6.2 million. He lost most of it and I think is estranged from his family, at last report. He kind of forgot that you have to pay TAXES on everything you win.

i agree with gphi2k. a million dollars, when won, isn't a lot. they do take out a lot of taxes which leaves you with less than what you probably expected. although i do not doubt what pbear19 said. some people freak out with extra money. i've always thought money is the root of a lot of problems, but it is also the stem of some happiness. money does make the world go round, as much as i hate to admit that.

I would donate some money to my mother and my church and this homeless shelter that I volunteer at. I would buy my mom a house and take care of my sibilings, friends, and other relatives with a little something. Of course I would buy myself a 01 Black 2Dr Accord Coupe. I would also invest in some stocks.

Siobhan 03-25-2001 02:25 PM

Are we talking a million USD because that would give us Canadians a few extra hundred thousands to throw around LOL!! Anyways I agree with a lot of people on here that a million really isn't that much, so here is what I would do with mine http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif.

Pay off my car loan, then buy a brand new car. Give some money to my parents, go travel around the world, donate money to my sorority, give a chunk of money to my boyfriend to help his business, go shopping, and then invest the rest so I can later afford some sort of home in Vancouver (we have the 2nd or 3rd most expensive real estate in North America!! It's insane.

moe.ron 03-26-2001 01:56 AM

I would go to Switzerland and ski till I can't feel my body is numb. Then go to Bali and go surfing. Then go to the Grand Canyon and Bungee Jumping.

I would buy a fur coat, but not a real fur coat, that's cruel.

Ideal08 03-26-2001 08:21 AM

I think about this everyday!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

First, I'd give at least $150,000 to my church (tithe and offering).

Then I'd pay off my student loans and other debts, including my sister's debt. I'd invest a huge portion of it. I would quit my job and start my own non-profit to empower women (YIPPEE!! This is my dream). Before starting my non-profit, however, I would take about 3-6 months off and travel, with myself, no one else.

I love to dream.....

Hootie 11-19-2002 12:16 AM

~I'd pay off all my debt.
~Pay for the rest of my school and some of my sibling's education
~Buy a new Mercedes Benz (chrome colored with tinted windows and heated leather seats)
~Rent a bigger apartment that allowed dogs (so I could finally live with my puppy).
~And then go on a huge shopping spree for my apartment
~And finally donate some of it to charity.

The1calledTKE 11-19-2002 12:17 AM

Invest it with the interest being a decent income. With the extra income I could enjoy a job I liked without having to worry about money.

chopper816 11-19-2002 12:29 AM

id buy some old muscle cars and a new ford truck. then get an awesome apartment or house, then invest the rest of it.

Kevin 11-19-2002 09:38 AM

I'd pay the first 50% or so to taxes.. The remaining $400,000 would go into my retirement account. I'd probably go to Schwab or something to have it set up.

poodleNtraining 11-19-2002 02:45 PM

Well, I have thought on this and I have a plan

If its 1,000,000 tax free

*10% to God............................................100 ,000
*pay off all loans and debts.....................30,000 (approximate, I actually have no idea)
*buy a car (a 2003 Escalade, with an air lift thing to lower it flat to the ground, purple, with platinum flakes, dark interior, 26 " spinners, and the works-but no TV's and what not, that's too much lol).............................................. .....90,000
*buy a house for my mother....................200,000
*buy a house for me................................200,000
*Furnishings for both houses...................20,000
*Set aside money for utilities, gas, taxes, insurance...200,000 (invested into an account that gains interest and transfers an certain amount to a checking account every month)
*A CRUCIAL beach wedding in the islands or Tahiti....50,000
*Incidentals (clothes, toiletries, etc for me, my daughter and future husband............................)............10 ,000
*the rest would go into investments..........100,000

see, it all adds up!!

XOMichelle 11-19-2002 03:13 PM

I'd buy you a green dress!
(But not a real green dress, that's cruel)

Maybe an llama or an emu?
jk.

zntke711 .. you are right.. you would give about half of it to the government. With the rest I would buy a new car :-) Pay my loans and save for my children and retirement.... oh so standard....

And who was it complaining about money? Geezzzz... get off your high horse. greediness is not cool, but not having to worry about your next bill is quite another thing! The reduction in stress is something that would make us all better off!

-M

valkyrie 11-19-2002 03:17 PM

I would pay off my debt and then use the rest to move to Seattle and open a restaurant/club.
