Hey, where exactly is your chapter located? Congrats on chartering...I bet it is a sigh of relieve...I was so excited once we got inducted after all that hard work of getting a chapter started. :) How many found fathers were there? |
Eta chapter of ΦΣΠ here... Congrats to ESA & SigEp on being founding fathers of their respective chapters. As a founding father of my social Fraternity, KΣ, I know all the hard work you two & your fellow Brothers put into the Order. Its defiantly an accomplishment, and yes, its defiantly a sigh of relief once you have the charter in hand and become official brothers!

Hello! I was a charter member of the Beta Epsilon chapter of Phi Sigma Pi at Syracuse. I joined in the spring semester of my junior year, which is when the chapter was started (back in 1993). I had been a member of a social sorority (Chi Omega), that closed the year before, so I was looking for some sort of new activity to get involved with on campus. I have to admit, things were still pretty disorganized back then and the chapter hadn't really began to come together as a cohesive group. There wasn't really a rush, recruitment, or selection process of any kind other than receiving letter saying "you have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, you are eligible to join." They had an interest meeting, and tons of people went to it, and basically, everyone who showed up was initiated.
I think by the end of my senior year, things had started to get on track- the people who weren't really into it had gone, and the people who remained were the ones who wanted to be active and involved. Many of the initial members I think were just looking for something to put on their resume, and didn't want to come to meetings, do service projects, have a big or little brother, etc. Just out of curiousity, I just found the BE chapter Facebook page and it looks like they are doing really well. They seem to have their place as a fraternity, with photos of the different lines/families, paddles, etc. Back when it inititally formed, it was more like a club than a fraternity. |
The same thing happened with my Chapter after we were founded....it took awhile for the people who were only in it for a resume boost to leave the Chapter or graduate. I'm the Alumni Advisor for the Chapter now and they are doing really well. The Executive Board is working well together and after our 1st Brotherhood Retreat this past summer, the Brotherhood as a whole is more united than it has ever been. :)

Every chapter has to find what works for them, though. We were lucky to always have a lot of interested people who had a 3.0. My time in Phi Sig was the best time of my life. Those brothers dominate most of my college memories. I hate that Phi Sig doesn't have more of an alumnae presence. |
