Were You in the Top Ten in Your Graduating Class?
At your high school graduation, were you in the top ten? Which of our GCers was their class valedictorian or salutatorian? :)
|
Number 6 out of 253. Go Class of 1995!
|
I was my high school's valedictorian. Class of 2002.
|
I was in the top 10, and got to sit on the stage at graduation! Class of '00.
Ahh the good old days... |
I think I was somewhere in the top 20 of 70. The whole school was made up of the top students in their middle school classes, chicks who cried if they didn't get a 1600 on the SAT.
|
Don't know. They only announcd the top two. But I was a national honor society inductee and a Negro National Merit finalist, so I suspect I was at least in the top 20 of a class of 400.
|
Was in the 10% and was NAACP Portriat of a Dream Honoree! Class of 1994
|
I wasn't (really competitive Catholic Prep School - you had to have about a 5.0 on a 4.0 scale [w/honors weight] to even crack the top 20) but I remember one year the top 10 took a yearbook pic with all of them attempting to form their "number" with their body. Number 1 was a guy, and all the rest were girls.

I was in the National Honor Society and the top 10. But not valedictorian or salutatorian.
Unfortunately, our salutatorian didn't have the outcome that folks assumed she would. She found another path that is equally satisfying for her. That goes to show that high school accolades are often a sign of something other than future ACADEMIC success. |

class of '98 |
^^^^^^Very true with my high school as well. I remember, years before she was valedictorian, one of my classmates got soooo flustered with our Honors class project that the teachers, all 3 of them, pushed back the due date.
One of them commented: 'If (name) can't finish it in time, I know the rest can't.' < But so true. Oh, and what high school did I go to? Ahem, let's check Newsweek's Best Public High School rankings...ah, yes...Walnut Hills. #34. :D:p:D:p Whoo-hoo! C/O 2002! |
Technically I was ranked #20 out of 141 students in my class (top 15%), but keep in mind that was based on the first THREE years of high school and does not take into consideration senior year. But taking into consideration that I pulled at least a 3.5 GPA my senior year AND taking a full courseload with no Mickey Mouse classes (I could've taken the remaining 2-3 classes required for graduation and called it a day) AND a lot of other seniors had "senioritis" like a mu'luva, I am reasonably sure that despite what the "official" reports say, I made the top 10 percent of my class (or at least top 11) :D

Hey now Soror Nia X...that gold dome represents excellence and prestige. LOL. Depending upon the year you saw it, it may or may not have had class numbers painted on it...or perhaps cafeteria tables. How clever those seniors and their pranks. :p |

and I knew folks from the Hughes Center, and St. X, and one other school.. shoot, can't think of it.... good peeps all around... get them old gold depends out the wrinkled behind... :p ;) |
I was 9 out of 81, daggon Pre-Calc and honors geometry.
Was in National Honors Society, Who's Who of American HS students, Beta club, student council and all that jazz. College I was in Golden Key and the departmental honor societies but didn't graduate with honors. Ironic, isn't it. |

I was in the Top 10% and NJHS. We were given special medals to wear with our Honor cords at graduation. |
I was 5 out of 200+ students (gotta think back to 1998)...I had a 3.7 and the top ten sat on stage for graduation. It's amazing how we think we have everything figured out at 17 or 18. I looked at my senior scrapbook the other day and wondered what was I thinking? LOL!!

...but right now, I need you to get ready because I'm going to swing by, pick you up, and we are going to pay a little visit to Ms. NiaX. I will hold her while you beat her dow er.....impress upon her the high academic rigor required of our dear alma mater (with her ole hate' talking self.) We can both curse her out in Latin (cause we can do it like that). :D:D |

I was in the top 20%, probably. I took three AP classes my senior year (one was first period  ), was a National Honor Society member, Spanish National Honor Society member, and was glad as HAYLE to done with senior year. I graduated with a 3.8, I think.
Class of 1994...... wow!! |
I was not in the top 20, so I have no idea what my rank was. Nor was I in the National Honor Society.
Ten years later, I turned out okay. |
I was in the top 15 percent in a class of 505 at an academically competitive high school..we had kids with 5.0 GPAs also....I could never be inducted into the National Honor Society because of my behavior in school...I was bad and acted out alot..:o:o:p
|
HA! I'm just grateful I wasn't in the bottom 10%! :o I was in the top third of my class in college though, maybe the top 20%, I'm not sure, but definitely over 30%.

Looking back, I don't know of any other students that took AP classes, though there could've been a couple, I don't know--I honestly didn't hear AP classes being heavily emphasized my entire HS career, so I don't know what its overall impact to the class was. FWIW, I just had the feeling that I was creeping in the top ten when I realized I went from the bottom rank of my Trig/Analytic Geometry class at the start of the year to the #2 rank by the end of the year--the number one guy was a junior (and future fellow Nupe) and he was vying for the top 10 ranking for the class of '92. I ain't mad at him for acheiving--that's pra'bly what helped him become a Nupe. ;) PS: Matter of fact, CT4 actually went to college with this guy and knows him personally :D. |
I was #9/120 in my graduating class (with a 4.0 overall GPA). The top 5 all had GPAs higher than 4.0 because of AP courses. Our valedictorian & salutatorian both had 5.0 GPAs (because they took the max number of AP courses allowed). I only took one (English).
I was actually MAD when I got my class ranking because I thought I was ranked higher. I remember crying to my friend (who was thrilled because she was valedictorian). I thought life was over. Five years later later, we get some good laughs over that story. |
My HS experience was interesting. I went to and "gifted" elementary school, so when I went to high school I was a sophmore academically. For three years I took classes with the students a year ahead of me. When they graduated, I was "housed" with my class, but tutored one-on-one in college prep courses.
The unfortunate thing about all of this is that I was already at least a year younger than my class (started HS at 12) and thus at least two years younger than the ones I had class with. My maturity level was definitely not on par and it affected me emotionally. I did not want to be the ultra smart TK (yes my Mom was the head of the math department at my HS.) So I did my fair share of acting out academically--skipping classes, not studying, etc. |
