Senusret I's Recruitment Story
So since I am a guy and in an NPHC fraternity, I figured I would add my two cents. It won't be a traditional recruitment story, but I didn't want to miss out on the fun!
The five NPHC fraternities will be: Brian Pumper Mandingo Wesley Pipes Mr. Marcus Lexington Steele I knew since I was a teenager that I wanted to be part of a brotherhood, but I was never quite sure which one would be the best fit for me. I was sorta biased toward Mr. Marcus when I came to college because of my positive interactions with them during my senior year in high school. To be continued! |
What University do you attend?

I meant to add that it's a retro thread, in case that wasn't apparent.

PS What's up with OTW Jr, who I saw posting? |

We don't have a chapter on his campus, silly! :o Still, if he and I shared the same reproductive organs, you know he'd be getting glowing recs from us all! :D As far as OTWjr goes...I have no clue who the hell the troll is and I have faith that John and the super mods will take care of it. They were notified as soon as the first post was left, and they're on the case. |
lol @ the frat names...

This "rush" thread is gonna be...interesting... |
Year One:
I arrived at St. Wilona's College (a prominent Jesuit college in a major urban area) in the Fall of 1997. Mr. Marcus held a special place in my heart because of their "reach-out-and-touch-everyone" approach to community service. Indeed, Mr. Marcus touched me in places I had never been touched before. I participated in a Rites of Passage Program that one of the members sponsored, and it really prepared me for the challenges I would face as a black man at St. Wilona's. Because of this camaraderie with my friend in charge of the program, as well as his line brothers and chapter brothers, I just KNEW I wanted to be down with Mr. Marcus! Well..... my freshman year at St. Wilona's was eye opening. Although there was a city-wide chapter of Mr. Marcus, there were no members on campus. There was one member of Brian Pumper.... that's it. There were no members of Wesley Pipes, Mandingo, or Lexington Steele! So I started my quest in a vacuum, with no basis for comparison. So, I went full speed ahead in my quest for Mr. Marcus...... |
Not only a boy's story...but we get to hear more about an NPHC journey to membership which should be very educational (at least for me!). So, YEAH for more retro recruitment stories!

ROFLMFAO!!!
The names...Oh my God! The names!!! Mr. Marcus! Nothing like a big black stud to liven up a recruitment thread. |
How do you all know this stuff?
I had to google to understand. Did you know that "Lexington Steele" was a member of Omega Psi Phi? It says so on Wikipedia so it must be true. |

For me, I'd heard of some of the names from a friend that runs his own adult store & I've been there a few times to visit. The rest I figured were in the same business so I looked up those names to be sure. |

No I just meant everybody who "got it" at first glance. I should have considered them more closely, I realize now.

I like how the names get more and more creative. Naming chapters after colors simpliy won't do anymore on GC.

I went to two inter-Greek events at area colleges during my Freshman year. Since St. Wilona's didn't recognize Greek life, I had to network where I could. I found a member of Mr. Marcus who would become my initial contact into their world. Although I was still friends with other members, he was the first guy I would meet from the city-wide chapter.
He was a nice guy. We chatted from time to time. I did service with Mr. Marcus. Went to social events with Mr. Marcus. Loved the history of Mr. Marcus. But you know what? I just didn't like the members OR the other aspirants very much. At all. So..... I said to hell with Mr. Marcus. I was really disappointed in myself for discontinuing my pursuit, but if Mr. Marcus didn't fit, I couldn't force it! I took a break from NPHC fraternities and focused on having the best life I could at St. Wilona's. That meant being active in the Black Student Alliance and NAACP, founding the St. Wilona's Step Team, and even pledging Alpha Phi Omega during my Sophomore year. After a while, the sting of my freshman year disappointment was a distant memory, and I was so busy with everything else, that I would have been happy if I NEVER pledged a black fraternity.... Until Senior Year..... |
I'm rooting for Wesley Pipes!

I'm loving the story, Senusret! Could you tell me if St. Wilona is the sister school to St. Thelma, St. Florida and St. Penny? :) |

and i've been trying to get my stories aligned to do a retro NPHC thread... if there's a waitlist, can i get on it? |
I'm gon to cut you for this, Shid!
ROTFLMAO |
I wanted to scream with laughter when I read the names. (No, LOL was not good enough today.) Beyond creative.
I'm looking forward to the telling of the story! |
Now, THIS is a recruitment story. Go Rashid go!
|
So rewind briefly to some events during my freshman year and sophomore year:
Freshman year, went to an NPHC event at DC's state college -- my friend/co-worker was a big-time Mandingo at his school. Now, at the time I had no interest in Mandingos, even though their reputations preceded them. Nice guys, though. The event had all NPHC orgs represented. It was at this panel that I met my first white Brian Pumper -- I wasn't shocked, but definitely surprised. He was a VERY down to earth dude. Not trying to be extra "urban" -- just himself. At the Brian Pumper table, I made probably my only faux pas as an aspirant. I asked him what one of the mascots meant. He politely told me that it had a special meaning to the members. I was like oh, okay, cool. The Wesley Pipes boys were there....handsome, clean-cut, but not my kinda guys. And there was one Lexington Steele -- isn't there always one? What struck me most about his presentation was that they were the most anti-hazing. There was a similar event at another school later in the semester, and I had similar reactions to all the members. My junior year, I attended another event, this time right at St. Wilona's. I was NEVER more certain that I made the right choice in not going Greek at all. Mr. Marcus' boys were a HOT MESS..... "the bruhs" this and "the bruhs" that and "the bruhs like to party" and "the bruhs like to go to church and then party." What a close call..... I was thisclose to being right up under Mr. Marcus! Also during my junior year, the most significant change in my life occurred leading me back to pursuing an NPHC fraternity. For an entire year, I lived with a Brian Pumper.... never once thinking too hard about pledging until after he left....but it was his friendship that ignited my interest.... more to come... |

Great story! *thumbs up* |
10 points for originality! :) :)
Based on the overwhelming approval for the OP's code names, I just had to Google these alibis out of curiosity. I obviously lead a way too sheltered life.... |
I didn't get the names at first glance, but once people started commenting I realized what they must be from without having to look them up. Guess that makes me only semi-sheltered. ;)
Loving the NPHC "recruitment" story - its definitely a different perspective, especially with your humor injected into it. |
