Major/Degree

Hey everyone,
I feel like I know many of you "regulars", but I was wondering what everyone's major is. I know that some of you on here are already college graduates, so I want to know about you guys too- what do you do for a living? I am a MIS major even though this semester I will be taking my first introductory course to it. Hopefully it will work out- but I am not sure what occupation I will have with a degree in MIS, something with computers obviously. I am just getting my feet wet right now i guess you can say!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hi bucutie02!!!

I am a Psychology major/Religious Studies minor. I may obtain a minor in Business as well...we'll see. I work too. I am a consultant at a Clinique counter.

I graduate in May and I have no idea what I want to do. I am so scared and stressed that it's not even funny...haha.

AlphaChiGirl 01-12-2001 02:08 AM

juniorgrrl 01-12-2001 02:17 AM

I also have a B.A. in English with a minor in History.

I know it sounds weird so email me and I'll tell you the background information

Alumnus who cares 01-12-2001 05:05 PM

I majored in sociology in undergrad (don't ask why--I kick myself every day for choosing such a useless major). I worked for a bank for 3 1/2 years, since there aren't many other jobs you can get with a sociology degree, and now I'm finishing up my MBA and working as a financial analyst. Basically, I'm taking all the classes that I SHOULD have taken in undergrad, and I'm working a job that I SHOULD have gotten as soon as I graduated. Better late than never, I suppose.

Babiegyrl 01-12-2001 07:31 PM

My major is Computer Information Systems, I'm looking for an internship and hopefully this summer I'll find one.

kmullini 01-12-2001 08:32 PM

B.S. Administration of Justice-George Mason University
A.A.S. Police Science, Germanna Community College.

Most of my classes at George Mason werent Criminal Justice related. The few I took were on Terrorist Groups in the world and I took a class where we had to do an observation paper(going out in the community) of various Criminal Justice elements. The Court System, The police, and corrections. When I graduated I moved to California and worked as a counselor with emotionally disturbed kids. I did that for two years. the pay sucked but the experience was invaluable. I think it was great for really any major. I did some volunteering at the Youth Authority there. Tough place. Then I got homesick so I moved back here and tried working at a state correctional facility here in VA. that really sucked and I quickly figured out that Criminal Justice as a job was not me. Unless I plan to go through Law School in my life time. At least I know and have the respect of what correctional officer and psychiatric counselors go through. Right now I am pursuing something totally different from what I should of pursued in school. Like many including Alumnus who cares. I worked Best Buy over this past holiday, quit that, and now I am temping for a company up in northern virginia and am building on my IT skills. So far so good. I guess IT is where I'm headed and getting those certifications or back to school. This was long.

Dewgirl 01-12-2001 08:51 PM

Majoring in English, Minoring in Kinesiology going for secondary certification. When I grow up, I wanna be an underpaid, overstressed high school teacher, only to continue with school and get a Masters and teach at the college level.

kmullini 01-25-2001 03:58 PM

SHSUChiO,

That reminds me of a old MonsterBoard Commerical with the little kids saying how they want a job were they are underappreciated, underpaid, and forced into early retirement.

I'm a Political Science major with an emphasis on Politics and Media in my 4th year at UH-Manoa, and my expected graduation date is May 2002 (it takes an average of 5 years to finish here for some reason). Initially I entered as a Biology major, took Organic Chem and all those stupid science classes and hated it. Then I decided to go into Communications because I was fascinated by the media and I wanted to someday produce children's TV shows, but the comm dept. at my school is horrible. The Poli Sci dept. is wonderful, and the professors are so caring and forgiving!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have a feeling I'll be in school for a very long time....

Received my B.A. in Political Science and German (double major) in Dec. 2000 from the University of Florida.

Just started my first year (1L) at UF's Levin College of Law, planning on concentrating in International Law.

Good luck to all of you wanting to go to law school - I love it, but it's a heckuva lot of reading! If you wear contacts, get a pair of glasses too - you will not be able to wear your contacts all day and still do all the reading. There are so many people in my classes that I knew from undergrad that all of a sudden are wearing glasses now. If you don't wear glasses, be prepared, you might end up having to. Staring at page after page of dense, fine print text can change your eyes. I'm not meaning to scare anyone. I just think it's so funny that I thought glasses were so incredibly dorky in elementary school, and now they're one of my most important accessories.

By the time I get my J.D., I will have been at UF for over seven years! Good thing I like it here, isn't it? As of this fall, I have attended *every* home Gator football game for five straight years. This fact gets a more excited reaction from some people than getting into law school, but oh well! Go Gators!

Counting down...less than 3 months until I finish my M.B.A.! Finally a degree that I can do something with!

In 2 months time I'll be holding that BA in my hand:
Major: History (US and European)
Minor: Political Science (Canadian and European).

You actually like sociology (the disclipline of flipping burgers as I call it)? Man, i hate this #hit, having to take a whole course on weber is terrible. I haven't had one single soc course yet that i've liked, in fact everyone I know who takes it hates it as well. My criminology courses are better, but I don't know what kind of job I can get with either. I'll probably end up going into one of those programs that teach something specialized in computers exclusively for university grads with useless degrees.

pbear19 03-03-2001 12:06 AM

My two majors are Economics and German. I don't think I've ever failed to get a strange look when I tell someone that! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I also have a minor in Spanish.

Lil_G, I got a kick out of your comments, since I went through the same deal 5-6 years ago. I actually thought some of the classical stuff (Weber, Marx, Durkheim) was kind of interesting, if not terribly practical in the real world. I also took a criminology course my junior year, and was very disappointed. It sounded really cool when I signed up for it, but they somehow found a way to make it dull and boring by using lots of statistical crap.

And while I didn't end up flipping burgers after I graduated, I took an entry-level job with a bank (not much higher on the old totem pole). In fact, one time a manager at the bank where I worked asked me what I was doing working in a bank after I got a sociology degree, and I said, "It's either this or McDonald's." Maybe that wasn't the smartest thing to say.

Things end up working out though. My advice is: you're still young, and you have plenty of time to decide what you really want to do, and go back to school for that. That's what I'm doing now by getting my MBA.

Maybe it was just the prof that I had that made my Weber and Durkheim classes so boring. Other classes such as the quantitative/qualitative research ones, and the anthropology courses (learning about the pygmies and the barabaig) have been better and maintain an actual use in the workplace.

Yeah i'll probably go into another field of education after i graduate. It just seemed that everyone I had class with didn't know what they would be doing after they graduated (even some honours students). A soc degree mixed with a business degree or something in computers could really be beneficial, get the best of both worlds.

Recent Alumna 03-03-2001 09:08 PM

Graduating in May with a BA in Political Science... my minor is Sociology. I'm looking to be a counselor (caseworker) for the Department of Corrections... or I'll go back to be teacher certified.
