back in the day when i was young, i'm not a kid anymore!! LOL

I recently stumbled over some old junior high school pictures of me, needless to say I was cracking up the whole time at the styles back than, I thought I was the bomb, but now these styles seem so silly looking to me.

My question to you guys is, what styles would you bring back whether it be fashion, music artist, a particular dance etc....and what styles do you hope never come back! And lastly, are there any current styles out that just make you question "what the hell were they thinking?"

I hope gumby's and big bamboo earrings never come back in style...as for current trends...I am not for the hairstyles that look like cake decorations!

DELTABRAT 07-18-2000 06:10 PM

I PRAY big dookey rope chains (think Run DMC/Slick Rick) never re-surface. I can also do without the basket weaves, the bob (like several layers, not just one), the cellophanes (not hair color/highlights...but BURGUNDY cellophanes). I can do without the Gucci/Loius Vuitton wear (the sweatshirts and stuff). I can do without leather colored bomber jackets. I can do without cuorduroy pants (girls in my hood used to rock the TIGHT http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif ones with Fila shoes and the shirt to match. I can do without rings on EVERY finger. I can do without feather cut hairstyles. I can do without that fuschia colored lipstick every young black girl THOUGHT was cute. Everything else was okay...I think.

DeltaBrat, although I usually agree with your posts I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you on something this time around http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif...because those leather colored bomber jackets were the BIZZOMB!!! I had like every flavor! and the yellow ones...Oh my God!! I would definitely bring those joints back. (Yes, I said joints) But if I never see door knocker earrings, MCM jackets, and jelly shoes again it would be too soon. What about that hair style which consisted of a part going down the middle of your head, with the two corn braids on each side (God forbid there was a bang)? I am all for bringing back old skool rap (Krs-1, Roxanne Roxanne...all 30 of them...the pre-"In the House" L.L. Cool J...Yall know "I need Love", Big Ole Butt") Speaking of big ole butts...remember "Doing the Butt" I loved that song, even though they never mentioned my name. I loved all the suede pumas (every flavor)...Hey! Where you guys live, has anything recently went out of style? By recently, I mean like within the last year or two. Like I know in Brooklyn it's considered the eighth deadliest sin to rock high top Reeboks any more. And those down filled "Bear" jackets...definitely a no-no. Oh my God! remember those Michael jackson "Thriller" jackets?!? I had the pleather ones...Somebody stop me...I can go on about this all day!!

onesavvydiva 07-18-2000 07:27 PM

I have posted a lot today, so for this, I only have one comment...

Gold/Red Lipstick with thick, black lipliner!
UGGHHH!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

TrueGreekLove 07-18-2000 08:44 PM

Sexy Mocha,

Girl you are a straight up and down trip...your post had me laughing! Suede pumas are the bomb and definitely ol school rap is a thousand times better than the stuff they got coming out today. Hey remember ellesse sneakers and when LA Gears first came out with the two different color shoe laces....what about the triple fat goose...and speaking of old dances...does teh cabbage patch and pee wee herman bring back memories or what!?

Serenity 07-18-2000 08:51 PM

Remember those blue or green listicks that changed color according to your karma/body chemistry? Boy, I couldn't tell you how many times I got suckered into that one. They all turned red/reddish and stained your lips. My lips would be soooooo dry, but they were like bright red. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif Needless to say, grandmother was not pleased.

Wynna 07-18-2000 09:11 PM

Yall going there?? Lord knows I just knew I was too fine in my fuscia lipstick that I got from the dollar store.

Oh, what about wearing the different color socks on each leg. You know, if you had on a red shirt and blue shorts you would wear a red sock and a blue sock (in that order) on the right leg and then a blue sock and a red sock on the left leg.

Remember Lotto shoes where you could remove and exchange the colored symbols?

Blue eyeliner anyone???

Remember the short tight suede skirts that everyone would wear with the silk tops?

What about biker shorts (knowing you ain't riding nobody's bike or doing anything athletic for that matter)!

Sexy Mocha 07-18-2000 09:13 PM

Hey! Did you ladies have that one shop in your neighborhood that sold all the fake stuff? It was where all the wanna be's bought they're fake ass four-finger rings and bamboo earrings. They had "gold" chains on a big old round spool looking thing and it cost like 50 cents an inch. Here's how you buy it:
Pookie: I'd like to purchase a dope ass chain, you know...like the one RunDMC and nem be wearing
Shop Owner: What lenghth?
Pookie: Oh, give me 18 inches of that...and make it Panamanian "Gold" *wink, wink*
There was this girl i went to school with that lived up in that store. She had the "gold" teeth and everything. She rocked the Gazelle glasses with the phat "Damaged" suit all the time! Those sure were the days!

BFulton 07-18-2000 10:03 PM

Oh my.... the list is long!

Things I hoped I would never see again that have resurfaced:
-bell-bottoms (sorry, still don't like them!)
-clogs
-those baseball-shirt style t-shirts (sorry, don't know the name - the ones where one color is the body, and the sleeves are another)
-hair parted down the center and really, really flat
-platform shoes

Things that don't seem to have come back around (and I sure hope they don't! lol)
-culottes
-knickers
-"prairie-style" blouses (the kind with big ruffles down the front or sides)
-parachute pants (especially worn super-tight!)
-"mall hair" - sprayed until it stood up about six inches from the forehead
-leg-warmers worn over jeans (though something tells me I may have seen this at the mall not that long ago)
-those late 80s/early 90s "sorority bows" - big flat bows on a barrette (sorry - I had to go there - I had them to!)

http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

TrueGreekLove 07-18-2000 10:47 PM

one word: KANGOLS! and what was up with standing at the bus stop sucking on a lollipop for awhile blow pop was selling like hot fire on my neighborhood! lol....wearing your clothes backwards like Kris Kross...carhart jackets...bubble jackets ( i hated those made you look like MICHELON MAN)....and oooooooh when everyone was sporting madallions..not gold ones but the ones that were shaped like africa and had the red, the black, and the green!

darling1 07-18-2000 10:53 PM

DIE ACID WASH DIE!!!!!! LOL

humblebumblebee 07-19-2000 12:00 AM

As for fashion, I only have three things to say:
1) USED
2) DAMAGED
3) CROSS COLORS!
It is a wonder we didn't all go blind!!!!

As for hairstyles: Does anyone remember the hairstyle girls wore that looked like popcorn... you know the one made using a fishnet hair scarf? How about the hairstyle that had your hair shoulder length on one side and touching the top of your ear on the other? Guys with the Kid (from Kid 'n Play) hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh top "box", and later Bobby Brown's "steps" (Don't be Cruel)!!! And last but not least, NAMEPLATES, which consisted of having your name on you herringbone, four-finger ring, or HUGE earrings {do y'all remember the earring with the key Janet (Miss Jackson if your nasty) made popular?}
That's all Folks.

Ok, what's with the Laverne & Shirley hair bandanas that EVERYONE is wearing this summer? Also there is a flowery, frill edged skirt that I remember from looking at 60's movies that has also resurfaced.

Now, I absolutely love platforms!

Someone mentioned lollipops. Remember the blowpops in the ponytail?

Remember the china doll haircut? I used to have my hair shoulder length on one side while the other is cut up to my ear. That was the bomb.

Remember when the "wrap" hairstyle first came out? I remember telling my friend "What? You don't have to roll it?"

Wynna 07-19-2000 01:29 AM

Remember coming to school and you go to the bathroom and all the girls are in the mirror applying the makeup their parents won't allow them to wear?

What about the "gumby" haircuts on guys? I hope that NEVER resurfaces!

Does anyone remember UTFO? I know I'm not THAT old! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

equeen 07-19-2000 11:22 AM

Ugh....out with late 70s/early 80s fashions!! But keep the music. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sexy Mocha 07-19-2000 03:55 PM

Oh no you guys did not go there with the Black Bart Simpson t-shirts! ACID WASH??? LOTTO SNEAKERS??? Yall some sick people!! I had forgotten all about those things! O.k. now...we need to get this out of the way....Stop frontin....Who had a jerri curl? Unfortunately, I had one. What the hell was going through our minds back then?!? I used to walk around with a mini bottle of S-curl activator. Did someone mention Kangols? believe it or not brothers are trying to bring them back here in New York. The word wack is also making a come back.

DELTABRAT 07-19-2000 04:22 PM

I am sorry Sexy Mocha but the bomber jackets weren't the bomb here. Yeah I remember the store with all the cheap stuff, it was called the Compton Swapmeet http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

What about the candy house. Everyone had a house on their block that sold ALL the bomb candy you couldn't find at the store. Like sour pickles, not dill, but sour. Hell, pickled eggs, fire jolly ranchers, the little bag of sunflower seeds (cuz no one NEEDS like 500 sunflower seeds). Blue acrylic fingernails. Fluorescent socks and accessories a la Madonna. Creepers, tapered Dickies and turtlenecks (people from LA remember dance groups sporting these like, KODs, SexJerks, etc. 1986-89...damn I'm old). The rap music WAS the bomb, what I wouldn't do to hear some Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick/ Real Roxanne, Roxanne Shante/ MC Lyte/ LL Cool Jay before he became TOO sexy / Biz Markie/

I KNOW y'all remember Ready for the World (we called them ready for the Curl)/ Force MDs/ Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam with Full Force/

Cabbage PAtch/Robocop/Smurf/PeeWee HErman/ The Guess/ The Prep (a la Janet Jackson in her 80's videos...I can't remember which one).

Yeah, Michael Jackson was FINE and no one cared he had a curl...those were the days http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Mocha, down here too. I saw a brother with suede "Kangol" shoes on...

Wynna 07-19-2000 09:58 PM

Sexy Mocha,

We going there with Jheri Curls? What about the hair pick with the handle that was a spray bottle where Jheri Curl wearers put their activator?

Aw man, the Compton Swapmeet? That's where I would go to buy my Jordana fuscia lipstick and blue eyeliner in junior high school.

Does anyone remember karate shoes? What about Atari 2600...the pinball game, pitfall?

Wynna 07-19-2000 10:00 PM

Remember the different colored "alligator" belts with the reversible buckles?

blu_theatrics 07-19-2000 10:09 PM

Why ya'll gotta play like that

You know I had a jerry curl and then I had the key earing that Janet had.

L.A. gears with the two different color laces.

combat boots (jodeci boots)

The socks (three different colors /different order on both sides....lol)

And you know it was hard as heck to grow out those hairstyles...one side of my hair still grows longer than the other.

Now lets go way back...remeber on them winter days when you had four sweaters (one of which you swore was really a boys sweater) the snow suit and two pairs of socks on just to go outside and play.

And Micheal Jackson......remember when it useto be like a movie premier when his videos came out. Thriller was like a family event..everyone had they popcorn and stuff sitting around the TV

TrueGreekLove 07-20-2000 12:35 AM

speaking of lisa lisa my favorite song was "all cried out" now that was the jam!

remember crush groove, and break dancing...i used to be in love with that break dancer named shabba doo...

remember l l cool j's "i need love" "When I'm alone in my room, sometimes i stare at the wall and in the back of my mind i hear my conscience call...."

remember 10 cent sunflower seeds, penny gums called big ball...ring candies that you wore as jewelry before giving in and eating them....

oh god! remember "bo-bo's bo-bo's make your feet feel fine..bo-bo's bo-bo's cost a dollar ninety nine!"

dpherlove 07-20-2000 12:42 AM

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE PURPLE SHIRTS THAT SAID RIPE (IN FLORESCENT COLORS) ACCROSS THE FRONT AND ACCROSS THE BUTT. mAYBE IT WAS A BRONX THING. THANKS!

SigEpYoda 07-20-2000 01:03 AM

Man, this is kewl. I used to own a Ewing shoes (hey, I'm a die hard Knicks fan). Those things were the heaviest shoes I have ever worn. I have no idea how I played basketball with them. Although the Cartoons were better back then. GI Joe, He-Man, Transformer, Go-Bats (I know, they were Transformer imitation). What about Atari and Nintendo with that Robots. Geez, I'm going to find my toys and play with 'em.

Also, will somebody please get rid of these CLAW acrylic nails with the neon colors and the palm trees!

I forgot........does anyone remember Punky Brewster??? Or the Smurfs? The first cast from Saved by the Bell? When Different World and the Cosby Show weren't reruns??? Those were the days...

thatgirl 07-20-2000 09:46 AM

awww....*sniff*....now I'm getting sentimental. I LOVE "A Different World". Me and my mom had the biggest fallout about that show. The church youth group used to meet on Thursday evenings at 7:00pm. I was like 'Nooooooooo. Can't make it. Can't miss Cosby. Can't miss A Different World'. Who did I think I was talking to?

Needless to say, I missed out on at least two seasons of my favorite show. They JUST started showing the reruns here. They come on at 7 and 7:30 am. Needless to say, I cut it close every morning just to watch my show. I almost cried the other day when they showed the one where Dwayne Wayne goes to Whitley's wedding and breaks it up. Aaahhh. Damn, they need to do 'A Different World 2000'. Let's work on that

Corbin Dallas 07-20-2000 09:51 AM

I used to have the Thriller jacket. Remember shaving stripes into your hair? I remember when I finally got to sit in the back of the school bus. I knew I had arrived http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the bomb! I remember when Nintendo came out and it was sooo much better than anything else! Oh to be a kid again! I remember complaining about having homework in elementary, you know when you had to look up vocab. words, and do some multiplications. To have homework that easy again!

Sexy Mocha 07-20-2000 11:08 AM

Wynna, what hair pick with the attached bottle of activator?!? Girl, I wish I knew about that...when my hair dryed out in school, I just casually went by the water fountain when no one was there and sprinkled some water on my curl! O.k., why yall had to go there with "Different World"? I'm all choked up now! *sniff* I told you guys about making me cry! I absolutely adored that show! Is there any channel that plays it in re-runs? What about "Good Times"? Man, that was the Sh*t! J-J and Michael was like how old (??) sleeping together on that pull out couch! Why did all of J-J's girlfriend's names rhyme? Like Vanessa-the-undresser...Boy! Those were the days...we may have dressed, acted, looked TACKY AS HELL...but we sure did have a lot of fun!

DELTABRAT 07-20-2000 03:50 PM

Okay...

I KNOW everyone (at least in Cali) remembers Egyptian Lover songs...like Technicolor and all the "breathy" sounding songs (uh...aah, uh...aah...okay y'all who know get the picture).

What about the LA Dream Team...is in the house.

Finally I KNOW everyone was down with the Beastie Boys...Hold It Now/Brass Monkey, and the bombest song (I can't remember the name) was the one where the music is being played backwards. The Beastie Boys were the shiznit!!!

OKAY and why are we all reminiscing about the hip-hoppish jams...y'all know you loved some Tina Marie (she was the first Black/White woman on the scene with the nose pierce and she gets MAD love).

What about Rick James (don't act like y'all wasn't down before he and his girl burnt old girl with the crack pipe).

Mary Jane Girls was awight.

Morris Day and The Time... Eryboday Walk

Do I HAVE to say PRINCE (every Black girl wanted to be Vanity)

Remember when videos FIRST came out on BET and stuff or MTV for that matter (I'm OLD).

With videos like Carribean Queen
JErmaine Stewart (you don't have to take your clothes off...I didn't like the song, but the memories of when things were sooo much easier is still good.)

Sh*% I KNOW folks remember Herbie Han****'s video with the "legs" walking around with no body.

Remember Fat Boys are Back and you know they can never be wack.

I can't even front...Duran Duran/Spandau Ballet/Tears for Fears/Depeche Mode/

How come no one cared Boy George was a transvestite (not transexual...transvestite...cross dresser)...I LOVED Boy George.

Aaah...the good ole days.

Okay, I just noticed and I am literally in tears LMAO that when I type Herbie's name the computer automatically censors the part of his name that sounds like a slang term for male genitals. You know what I mean. Han****,Han****, Han****...see.

That is too funny.

What are you talking about "The Beastie Boys were the shiznit!!!"? They still ARE. Granted they've grown up...A LOT, They still rock! I do love Liscence to Ill the best though! "Girls" is a house favorite. It works wonders, kinda like "The Thong Song"

My folks went to Black Expo (don't ask me!) saturday and saw Earth Wind and Fire and Tina Marie. They had a good time, even though as my dad said, he felt like "a marshmellow floating in a cup of hot chocolate" He's all right, for a dad!

Speaking of Herbie Han****. I noticed that it gets bleeped when you say ****tail too! That's some funny $h1t!!
