Name Your Phobia

I'm alone in my townhouse tonight and there is a cockroach!!!! I am TERRIFIED of bugs, (entomophobia) especially roaches. I know it's completely irrational, but it doesn't stop be from freaking out. :o

So what are you afraid of and would you consider it a phobia? Have you gotten over and it if so how in the world did you do it?

mulattogyrl 05-15-2007 10:18 PM

I'm afraid of them too. Well, not as much the regular sized ones, but the HUGE ones they call waterbugs. I can't even think about it.

I also am terrified of big moths. OH. MY. GOSH. It's the time of year when they suddenly appear in your shower or something.

Obviously I haven't gotten over it.

ErinIsBadNews 05-15-2007 10:29 PM

Are waterbugs and palmetto bugs the same thing??? We have a lot of palmetto bugs in Florida. :( It doesn't matter how many times you get your house sprayed or how clean your house is, they will still get in!

PrettyBoy 05-15-2007 11:06 PM

I know it's strange for a guy to be afraid of bugs, but I have a big bug phobia. Small ones don't bother me, but the big ones? Oh yeah, I won't even spray them with Raid. When I do that they go nutz, and when they go nutz, I do too.:D

Dionysus 05-15-2007 11:14 PM

Emitophobia - fear of vomiting. I fear it as much as dying. I also fear being in the same room when someone else vomiting. That's why I don't drink excessively. I'm also rarely DD, it would not be cool if some drunkard pukes in my car! I'll help to pay for a cab, if my friends can't find another sober person to take them home.

Rudey 05-15-2007 11:18 PM

Yall need to move out of public housing and not put up with cockroaches.

My favorite motel story that I just have to share:

I am on this big deal, they fly our group out on a corporate jet because it's an emergency, they pick us up in a limo, they drop me off in a Holiday Inn and everyone else goes somewhere fancy. My faucet didn't work. The lobby looked like Serbia after the NATO bombings. And that continental breakfast left me feeling like a million pesos.

I have the exact same fear....I can't stand it when a kid pukes at school..I shudder to think about it.

NinjaPoodle 05-16-2007 01:25 AM

I've got 4:
Acrophobia, Altophobia — fear of heights
Claustrophobia — fear of confined spaces.
Apiphobia, Melissophobia — fear of bees.

and

Thunderstorm phobia. You will find me under a bed with a blanket over my head. :( If there is lighting associated with it, fa'get about'it!

To combat my fear of heights, when I went to the Big Island 2 years ago, my then boyfriend and I took a chopper flight over the island not to mention the volcano. I figured that if it was my time to go, so be it. I didnt want to miss an opportunity to view the island from up above. I don't regret it either. I still have issues but not as bad as before.

As far as the clasutrophobia, I stay away from crowded places as much as possible which is hard sometimes because I work in the financial district of San Francisco. I have my ways though. I either walk behind the pack or in front. I take my lunch early (1130 am) or late (after 1pm).

mystikchick 05-16-2007 02:21 AM

heights, unquestionably. i've had some awful and terrifying experiences, the most memorable of which was being on a ski slope, with skis on, thinking that the blue slope didn't go too much higher than the bunny slope and being VERY mistaken. when the ski village started to move back and forth in my vision (like it would come closer and then move away), i sat myself down on my butt and scooted myself all the way down the rest of the hill - it took about 45 mins.

needless to say that was also the last time i ever went skiing.

33girl 05-16-2007 02:23 AM

Bats. Just the suggestion that one may be nearby freaks me out.

I also have a somewhat irrational beyond disgust, but maybe not quite phobia of wet paper.

Scandia 05-16-2007 06:28 AM

Pyrophobia- fear of fire

Also haven't been able to find out names for:

- fear of being deformed/losing a body part
- fear of crowds. May fall under agoraphobia, but I have no problem with open spaces. In fact, it is tightly packed crowds inside buildings that set it off the worst.

_Opi_ 05-16-2007 08:29 AM

Lightening and knives

AlethiaSi 05-16-2007 09:27 AM

um... i have a fear of throwing up in public... when i get nervous .... i gag... which turns into dry heaves and then i really start freaking out....
i don't like other people throwing up( not like its an enjoyable experience) but sometimes i can take it (like holding a friends hair back at the end of the night) but if i'm sober... no way...

i HATE HATE HATE jello. or jiggly substances.... i can't even look at jello, talk about it....
even that sh*t thats on the top of mayo ....
ugh i'm gagging just thinking about it...

I hate flies... i freak out when i hear that buzzing noise... so i guess that includes bees... i can't even stand hummingbirds (though they are pretty...)
or crawly things... centipedes... big spiders.... bleh

OneTimeSBX 05-16-2007 09:59 AM

oh dear lord...

BIG PARROTS... those huge parrots people walk around with on their shoulders? i can tolerate other big birds like hawks, but i just look at parrots and start to shake and sweat!

BRIDGES. people, they do collapse. not often, but they do.

HEIGHTS IN GENERAL. (see bridges!)

BIG SNAKES. anything big enough to escape and squeeze me to death.

FLYING. i am 26 and have been on a plane once. it was not a good experience. i prefer trains and buses now. the only plane i would trust not to crash is Air Force One!

thats pretty much it. spiders/bugs, dont bother me. i am the "man of the house" and have to kill everything.

AlexMack 05-16-2007 10:33 AM

I have horrendous acrophobia. It seriously affects my everyday life, the true definition of a phobia. I can't go above the 3rd floor in buildings, I can't stand on ladders, anything like that. It kind of sucks because I want to be a flight-nurse (on the medflight helicopters) but I'm going to have to do a lot of work to get over this.
Took a patient to the 4th floor the other day and I mistakenly looked out their window. NEVER AGAIN.

I also have a bad fear of falling which is probably partly responsible for my acrophobia. Don't know what it's called exactly but again, its a true phobia.

if this is something you want to do, then you should go to someone that specializes in phobias (duh) but specifically, behavior therapy. Through this type of treatment, you go through a process known as systematic desensitization, which uses a variety of techniques to help you work through your phobia and develop coping strategies when confronted with it.

I will eventually. Becoming a flight nurse is a long road that involves getting your RN, specializing in critical care, working critical care for at least 5 years and then finding a slot on a helicopter somewhere. I figure I'll be in my late 30s before it happens so I've got time to work on this.

I told my boyf I wanted to fly to Cali for a vacation this year and he was all  because I hate flying and I told him I wanted to fly. I said I'd take valium, my ipod (named Valium) and hold his hand.

KSig RC 05-16-2007 11:28 AM

I don't know the name of it, but guess I'm pretty scared of carnivorous fish.

Well, not even just fish, because the Portuguese Man O'War also scares the shit out of me. Shit stings, yo.

Me too! I always wondered what it was called. It was my biggest fear about getting pregnant - would I have morning sickness?! Luckily, I didn't! I am nervous about the dealing with a puking kid thing, though...Guess I have 3 months to get over that...:(

Also hate roaches, they make me nauseous. However, all you Floridians with your "palmetto bugs" and the NYers who call the giant ones "water bugs" - you all know those are just pretty names for cockroach. When I moved to NYC I did a lot of research on them and found those are just names people use to feel better about have a ginormous cockraoch in their home. Really not trying to make you feel worse, just giving you the facts! :p

KatieKate1244 05-16-2007 04:02 PM

Ice on any surface where I have to walk. I will avoid going outside or walking in areas where there is ice. I remember going to Pittsburgh to look at a college and there was ice everywhere. I think that was the biggest reason I crossed the school off my list.

Knives also scare me, and I do have a slight fear of bees, but only because I'm allergic to them.

However, I can say with pride I am not scared of these things, and would love to have one for a pet: really big spider

KSUViolet06 05-16-2007 04:47 PM

Arachnophobia- fear of spiders.

AXi1257 05-16-2007 05:02 PM

spiders, snakes, creepy bugs. I've never seen a cockroach... thank goodness. I'd probably cry.

midwesterngirl 05-16-2007 05:12 PM

I am terrified of deep water and bridges over deep water. I can swim but don't generally go in water over 10 feet. If a bridge is over railroad tracks, it doesn't bother me. I am also a tad claustrophobic too.

crimsondanger10 05-17-2007 01:33 PM

Heights and Snakes

Why? did the janitor just come in my office this morning to show me a snake that another janitor found in the school.:eek: I literally freaked out to the point where a teacher had to pray for me. I cried and screamed for a good while.

Tuesday evening, I ran over a snake in my car and almost had an accident trying to avoid it. Once again I was shivering, shaking, and screaming!!

Cardinal026 05-17-2007 01:39 PM

Worms...which is so weird, because I don't mind snakes and bugs that much, but worms and caterpillars terrify me. If its going to rain, I make sure that I'm parked in the garage so I can go from the house to work and never have to be outside where they might come out and be lying on the pavement. And my poor boyfriend has to change his whole schedule around when its rainy because I'm absolutely not walking the dog in case I see one. :(

Yeah, I think they're the same, because I remember being in Miami over a very clean house and there were like 2 on the floor and nobody paid attention to them but everyone paid attention to me when i hopped up on the couch

JWithers 05-19-2007 10:02 AM

ROACHES-I grew up in FL and they are everywhere. Sometimes they can FLY. I will never live there again for that reason and the hellish heat.

CLOWNS-I don't think I need to explain it any other way than, "If you aren't evil, why can't I see your face?". Plus John Wayne Gacy was a clown.

BRIDGES-Even high overpasses where you see nothing but sky out of the window, or high roads in the mountains. I just know I will lose control of my car and send it careening into the air, only to plummet to my fiery death.

THE DENTIST-I have to be sedated even for cleanings or I get a mild-to moderate panic attacks. Yes, I am a weenie. But they have sharp metal hooks and do have any idea how many nerve endings are in your MOUTH??!!!

LMAO. My mother and many women in my extended family are like that.

MissLib05 05-21-2007 08:44 PM

Lil things

I am afraid of ants. I think they are going to climb in my head and eat my brains. Same thig with worms.

BetteDavisEyes 05-21-2007 08:49 PM

Potato bugs. They scare the beejeezus out of me. I freak out if I look at one.

cheerfulgreek 05-21-2007 10:35 PM

I'm not afraid of spiders you can buy in a pet store or see at a zoo. Those kind are very interesting, but I'm petrified of small house spiders.

I don't like June bugs or any kind of flying beetle, because they get caught in my hair. That really freaks me out.

sunnyhibiscus 05-22-2007 03:06 AM

Don't laugh but old, slow elevators. Especially on a fall day with leaves inside the elevators. it's like a scene of a scary movie.

Also, heights.

When I was little I was scared of dogs. But I'm not scared anymore.

LaneSig 05-22-2007 08:43 AM

I am terrified of snakes. I hate them. When I taught 1st grade, another teacher would always have to walk my class through the snake house when we went to the zoo.

I really hate heights. I don't care what you say: Above the 4th floor, I swear I can feel the building move.

RU OX Alum 05-22-2007 09:15 AM

i'm not sure at all if i answered, but for me too also heights

especially roller coasters, ladders, anyplace where I might fall. Sometimes buildings are okay, because you can forget about it, but I don't like to look straight down, i get nauseous. I also feel sick going over bridges

keeleeli 10-18-2008 12:48 AM

wierd phobia

i don't know what this phobia is but for some reason i cant look at anything if theres more than one of them and there in the same area.....
it really scares me and its hard for me to look at things like that for more than five seconds....
WHAT IS THIS PHOBIA!!!
if its not a phobia yet.... it should be
hahah

LucyKKG 10-18-2008 04:40 AM

I'm afraid of being buried alive (not claustrophobia though). I also have this weird fear of fish. (Ichthyphobia??) It's weird cause I actually used to have pet fish. I can't watch fish swimming around while I'm eating. The way they wiggles GROSSES me out. I'm also terrified of finding fish on the ground at pet stores. I've seen two (squished) in my lifetime and I almost cried both times. I watch the ground verrrrry carefully and walk really slowly when I'm at a pet store.
