Phi Mu opinions

Hi! I was just wondering what the general opinion of Phi Mu is. We have a great chapter where I am but I wanted to see how we are elsewhere, thanks!

IowaHawkeye 11-23-2000 02:59 AM

To me, Phi Mu seems to be a sorority that is stronger in the south... we don't have Phi Mu at the University of Iowa

carnation 11-23-2000 09:15 AM

Strong at Mississippi State and Auburn (often considered the "face" sorority!) but the chapter at Arkansas folded twice. It's a very good group in Georgia and Alabama; I've heard that the chapters at UGa, Jacksonville State, Ga Tech, and West Ga are really good!

NUPE4LIFE 11-23-2000 04:07 PM

I don't really like post like this. I'm sure Phimugirl that you had good intentions though. I just feel like the organization as a whole is bigger than the chapter. We all know that on cetain campuses an organization is not as popular as it might be on another, but it's still Phi Mu or whatever. I took an oath to Kappa Alpha Psi, not to my chapter. I don't care what people think of my organization on campus, for Kappa is the same everywhere you go. We're bunch of brothers for which Achievement is our main purpose.

It kinda bothers me that every other sorority has asked the same question on this board but I get a negative reaction when I ask. I thought that is what bulletin boards like this were for, to find out info. and communicate with one another on friendly terms about greek life.
When I get reactions like this it makes me not want to post here at all, and that was my very first post! I hope no one takes offense and I'm sorry if you have, but this is just how I feel.

I agree with you. I know that I posted a question about my own sorority and people answered without any negative reaction to the topic. I then read your post saw that you got negative responses from people. I feel bad because this was your first post. I'm sorry if I offend anyone by saying this but if you had something negative to say in this post, you should've created a new topic. Almost every one of us is guilty for asking about our greek organization's reputation, therefore the response should have had its own topic; it should not have been posted under PhiMugal's topic.

IowaHawkeye 11-25-2000 10:12 PM

i don't think anyone was aiming to be hurtful in their responses... we're simply stating that we take an oath to our nationals, not our chapters - we shouldn't care how others percieve us, what made us want to be a Phi Mu or a Delta Zeta ect. is all that should matter... if we didn't care so much about what others thought of us - we'd be a lot more free and way happier :-) no matter what, as greeks, we have the utmost respect for each others letters.

I think Nupe4Life was just saying that we have seen this asked about every sorority and it is getting somewhat tiresome. It has nothing to do with Phi Mu specifically. This isn't the first time we have gone through the cycle either! So please don't take it personally.

Someone did take part of Nupe4Life's response and post it in a separate thread.

PhiMugal 11-26-2000 04:35 PM

Thank you to everyone who responded, I can see what you mean and I appreciate and respect your opinions too

Hey PhiMuGal,
We have Phi Mu here at my school and since i want to rush this spring, I have been doing some research on it. There arent many Phi Mu chapters here in texas, but i know that at my school all the girls are really sweet! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Ill keep you posted if I become one http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

CutiePie2000 11-27-2000 10:38 AM

I live in Canada and there aren't any Phi Mu chapters, so I really cannot say! I haven't ever knowingly met a Phi Mu.

That being said, I'm sure that Phi Mu is like many other sororities....it has lots of members are wonderful, and also other member who are, (ahem!) "less" than wonderful.

KarenC725 11-29-2000 02:08 PM

Since my mother is a Phi Mu, I have to love them! I know many great girls from across the country and a terrific alum from Salisbury State in MD.

blondie9796 12-04-2000 02:45 PM

I am A KD at Troy State University and Phi Mu is great here! They are my fave sorority after mine of course. They are beautiful and lots of fun. I have alot of good friends who are Phi Mu's. KD and Phi Mu always stick together on everything, and are definitely the two best sororities here!!

sororitychick 01-19-2001 12:33 AM

well phi mu seems to be a southern sorority, it needs to establish more chapters in the north as well.

Allie_XO 01-20-2001 09:06 PM

Phi Mu at the University of South Alabama is pretty good. They are known as the blond and the beautiful, but some are lacking in the brains department. Some (not all) reportedly are VERY friendly with the guys, but one of my best friends in a Phi Mu, and she's the sweetest girl in the world. On this campus though, XO and Phi Mu have a bit of a rivalry, so I can't be completely impartial. (So far were are on top http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif !)

Yeah, from what I have heard, Phi Mu isn't very big in the northern portion of the country at all. Although, my high school english teacher was a Phi Mu at University of South Alabama. Ya'll must be picking out the smart ones there, since she was the best teacher I have had, at either the high school or college level! Anyway, keep up the good work and I'd love to see a Phi Mu chapter at my campus in the future.

As much as I tend to find these posts tedious, I have the same curiosity about Beta at other chapters, so I guess that I can indulge you.

My ex girlfriend went Phi Mu here at Nebraska, but I'll still be as impartial as possible.

Phi Mu is like the invisible house on campus, mainly because their house is not on Greek row, therefore I think they don't get a lot of the inter-greek culture like the other houses do (stealing composites, serenades, and just seeing people on their way to class and the like). Their reputation is that they aren't a rich house, which is one of the reasons my ex chose them. To quote her "they didn't have the 'look at my manicured nails' attitude" that she found at other houses. Also they don't seem to be that involved on campus, are middle of the pack in grades, and to be honest not the prettiest girls on campus. That's their Reputation.

All the Phi Mu's I've ever met (excluding my ex) though have been pretty nice girls, rather sweet personalities, but not a looker in the bunch. From what I understand we at Beta haven't done any social activities with them in the past three years, but they haven't ever made an effort either.

So that's the lowdown on Phi Mu at Nebraska: some fairly sweet girls, but hurt by location and rep.

Phi Mu at Penn State was having a lot of trouble for a lot of years. I think they folded 2 times, and their numbers were low, however...last fall they initiatied 14 or 15 new girls which was right around the same as some of the other sororities. If they keep going they'll very soon be at the same numbers as the other sororities. This past year our Homecomig queen was a Phi Mu. I know a girl who just became a Phi Mu here and she seems to love everything about it. They're definintely a respectable group of women who have a lot going for them which looks like it may break through in the near future.

shadowstar 01-09-2002 10:37 PM

we have a chapter of Phi Mu on my campus and they are a group of very classy, well rounded women. I have several friends in this house. if they are a representative of Phi Mus across the country, i think it's strong organization.

deltaphi94 01-11-2002 11:36 PM

I happen to be biased because I am a Phi Mu, but I was told even before I pledged that Phi Mu girls were the ones guys would take home to meet their parents. We also had at least one house tell us that, if they could, they would have limited mixers to our chapter. I also need to leave you with this...

Enjoy your collegiate years, and don't worry about what others think about the letters you wear. You chose Phi Mu for a reason. Hold that close to your heart. Hold your head high and be proud because you are part of a very strong history.

Excellent thought. Anyone can substitute their own org for Phi Mu and it will still hold true!

PM_Mama00 01-14-2002 12:34 AM

Well, while Phi Mu is stronger in the south than in the north, the chapter at UofM-Dearborn is a really great chapter. They arent at total, but all the Phi Mu girls are great and are a great time to hang out with. They are all beautiful in every way, and the fraternities love them too! But that doesn't really matter. This is a totally unbiased opinion :p
