New TV show based on Greek Life
I saw the preview of this show earlier on ABC family, it seems a little risque for a network with "family" in it.
http://abcfamily.go.com/shows/greek/ |
half the shows on ABC Family are totally inappropriate for kids....I'm pretty sure it's a teen network these days
|
They used to do this nifty little thing where before the shoe they'd show a graphic of a stick figure family, a kid, a teen and parents. And then whichever ones shouldn't watch the show were darkened and the ones who were "old enough" were lit up.
Not so sure if they do that anymore. But they have had teen shows for a while now. |

I doubt I watch it.

This should be interesting
From the second I saw the ads for this show around my campus I knew it would be bad. I went online to check it out and low and behold what symbol did they choose to represent greek life?? A red solo cup of course. I'm pissed off about this show and it hasn't even started yet. Like Greeks don't have a bad reputation already and they are just making the stereotype worse.

And yeah, it is only red solo cups for me too. I went to a party with green solo cups ... I was excited--I haven't seen that ever before or since! |
solo cups come in all colors. i went to a NPHC party and every org had them in their colors.
then again, i dont know if they come in white... |
and im really disappointed in the red honking solo cup and the Sigma symbols as E's. im most disappointed at the tagline: "college. it's a rush."
can they fire the intern who came up with that one? |

man....it'd be nice to see NIC, NPC, and NPHC come out with some kind of joint condemnation of this mockery of a show.

There you go!!!! Another crappy show that is going to draw the wrong crowd or at least the wrong people to our organizations. This isn't Greek life. This is another crappy TV show by people who were probably rejected by every Fraternity or Sorority they ever attempted to be involved with. Be ready for the hail storm of questions from the incoming freshmen and be on the look out for posers who mimic what they see on TV actually thinking that ABC family is the authority on Greek Life. Every greek on every campus is going to have to work that much harder to find the people who were born to be Greek but didn't know it....
AND FOR THE RECORD I HATE WHEN PEOPLE USE SIGMAS AS THE LETTER E.... |

But anyways more importantly this the classic script from the 90s. The hot sorority president probably gets involved with the nerdy roommate, the awkward boy trying to join a fraternity and meets the hot girl, etc etc. So cliche it's disgusting. Does anybody remember that awful show on MTV that was basically the Real World but at some sorority house in Davis? I forget what it was called goodness. |
Wasn't it called Greek Life. There was a Fraternity on it as well a different season. The chapter they did was at UC Santa Cruz and it was a difunct Sigma Chi chapter that changed their name to Sigma Chi Omega. They used Sigma Chi's flag and everything the only difference was that the flag had the words Sigma Chi Omega across the bottom in white block letters.

MTV's Fraternity and Sorority Life
Actually, there were 3 seasons of Sorority Life and 2 seasons of Fraternity Life.
Season One of Sorority Life featured the sisters of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi (SAEPi), Jewish-interest sorority at UC-Davis. This season wasn't so bad, IMO. Season Two of Sorority Life included Delta Xi Omega, a local sorority at the University of Buffalo. Season One of Fraternity Life also began here with Sigma Chi Omega. Discussion of these trainwrecks are here. Then Fraternity Life 2 happened. Unfortunately, Delta Omega Chi members at UC-Santa Cruz were accused of stealing and possibly grilling Goldie, the beloved campus koi. :( The University of Southern California prohibited MTV's cameras on campus to film Sorority Life 3, which was set to include the sisters of Zeta Sigma Phi. Despite one of my HS classmates being an active sister during this season, I didn't bother watching it past the first episode. |

Currently, the local Sigma Chi Omega has retained blue and gold as their colors as well as the white rose for their flower. It is my understanding that anything else that might be associated with Sigma Chi International Fraternity is no longer used by the local. This may or may not be the result of potential litigation by Sigma Chi International Fraternity on (toward?) the local Sigma Chi Omega. |
They need to make a show like this for those of us who are in a latino or BLGO, now THAT would be interesting

(and i know, another discussion for another time, but those PARTICULAR MEMBERS of ZPhiB made THEMSELVES look bad) ETA: ok, the cameras could come to community services...but yeah. it would have to be some real fabricated mess to get a whole season. |

Anyway, this sounds like just another trainwreck in the works. Oh, and they do make white Solo cups. |

The lead girl is Spencer Grammer -- Kelsey's daughter.
She also played Dr. Lucy Montgomery on As The World Turns (for us ATWT fans). I never liked her then so I don't know if I'll like her character in this one. |
In one way or another this show is going to be a train wreck.
However, as we have seen in movies, train wrecks can grab an audience and make money:( |
I am so tired of Greek media, its never good. And what former Greek lifer CEO approved this crap! I nearly fell over when I saw the previews, I just can't OH WAIT I can believe that all we will ever be seen as is the skinny rich girl with the prada bag and the perfect boy (even if he is a cheating bastard) thats how we get ahead in life right girls! OMFG, I hope somebody out there reading this that knows somebody that knows somebody at ABC tells them how screwed up they are!
THIS IS NOT US!!!! Sorry I had to rant  |

Someone doesn't need to be Greek to know that people like to put the Greek system in a negative light. Someone at ABC/Disney (their parent company) had an idea and judging from the promo pitches it's getting, this show might actually be popular with their target audience...especially since most network shows are on hiatus for the summer. I agree that the SOLO cup doesn't promote the greatest image for us, but that and the "Virtual Rush" you can sign up for online? That's kinda funny and I think their PR people did a good job. |
Wow!!!
If anyone actually checked out the site-you can "Virtually" rush....If you want to join a sorority you can "rush" ZetaBetaZeta...Read what they write about the purpose of the sorority...seriously....if you guys wanna' really get pissed about how they portray greek life-check out the explanations of their chapters for Virtual Rush....In fact, there are people who signed up to rush these fake organizations on this site....Makes me wonder how many of them will be going through rush in the Fall....if you're an active member and not a new "Alum" like myself-GOOD LUCK with Recruitment and watch for people like this....
|
Shows like this are Darwinism in action.
If someone comes through rush and says "OMG I watched that show on ABC Family and I was so excited to join because I know you guys are exactly like that!" you can cut them quickly and not think about it. |
Quote:
OOOH. Good point! I didn't even think about that ... |
From the preview: "On a campus where everyone's a brother or a sister, they're learning that it's not just Greek Life, it's real life."
HaHaHa I'm pretty sure this series will focus on partying, hazing, etc etc and completely forget to mention the philanthropies, community service, mentoring, school spirit, and other positive aspects that Greeks contribute to their communities. Oh well, I guess that will mean more work for us in the upcoming semester(s). |
Ohmmm
Well on the upside, who watches ABC family?
|
Quote:

Well there tends to be more partying than any of the above :p
Otherwise we would be service groups. Quote:

Several years ago, SNL had a skit in which SAE was named (i.e. used a real GLO rather than made one up). I thought that was rather odd/strange and the skit was not all to flattering. I called the Networks switch board and complained about it; something I had never done before or since. I also spoke with National about it. I was rather surprised to learn, later, that the actor in the skit is an SAE. |
GrSSK!!
Sorry, its a big pet peeve of mine when people make stuff about Greek Life and then go and use Sigmas as Es or Deltas as As or whatever...I dunno, I guess I just think its kinda lazy, they go through all this trouble to make a show about Greeks and then assume that cuz Sigs look like Es they are. I'm just sayin, if they're gonna use Greek Letters in a title about something about Greek Life like that, why not get creative and use the actual letters in the title (Gamma Rho E E K)? I understand that people who don't know anything about Greek Life would assume that they're Es and read it as such, but yeah...that bug anybody else or am I just being dumb? |
