GC Rules of Thumb
This is similar to the Top Newbie questions thread, but more about GC itself, not Greek Life.
1) NPC, NPHC, IFC, and local orgs are all different (and I think I am missing a 4th council). If you are a member of one, DO NOT presume to know how the others do business. 2) Use the search function before starting a new thread. 3) If your grammar/spelling sucks, people will think you are an idiot. 4) Read some threads before you post. If you see GCers that are rude to everyone, and then they are rude to you, don't freak out. You are not special. What else? |
Members in high school should proceed with caution, discretion, common sense, good spelling, and grammatical skills.

If you're a new poster, please familiarize yourself with "how things are done" on GC by reading lots of old threads before running your mouth. It's very frustrating to see a poster with less than 20 posts jump in the fray on controversial topics and start a trainwreck on what was otherwise a civil (if heated) discussion.
Examples: "OMG I'm so sorry you got crosscut from recruitment, you know, you should look into alumnae initiation, my sorority does AI and it's something you should consider if you still want to join a sorority!" "Well I'm a member of an NPC org and I know you like Delta Sigma Theta, but don't worry! If you're nice and sweet I'm sure you'll totally get a bid to DST when you go through rush! Let me give you lots examples based on how NPC orgs conduct recruitment and use that to advise you on how to join an NPHC org! By the way -- keep an open mind to ALL houses, even if DST isn't the right one for you, another org will probably be a better fit for you. Can't wait to hear your rush story!" "What do y'all think of Pledged?" If you're a new poster on GC and all of a sudden everyone's jumping down your neck about something, chances are YOU ARE IN THE WRONG. You'll only exacerbate the situation by getting defensive and cussing everyone out for being "mean." I have learned so much more about GLOs via GC than I ever would have had I not created a GC account. I still have so much more to learn, but I realize just how little actually knew about Greek Life before October 2005. EDUCATE YOURSELF on all aspects of Greek Life by reading past threads, Mr. or Ms. Newposter, and you won't look like an ass and get flamed like hell for your first few posts. |

I would think that most people are smart enough to browse a message board and learn the meme before jumping in, but that is clearly not the case, so I am trying to lay it all out as neatly as possible for them. Here's another one: If a mod deletes your post, and you can't figure out why, PM the mod once and ask nicely. Do not repost the original post, and do not post a new post asking what happened to the first one. |

Generally speaking, don't say anything bad about individual chapters or organizations as a whole... especially about organizations as a whole.
It's hard to make generalized comments applicable to thousands of people spread out over wide geographic areas and be accurate.. so don't try. |

Maybe we need some kind of "introduction" thread? It could just be to a linked area on GC so folks know the caliber of people they are contacting. We all say do a search, but folks fail to heed advice or instruction...

all in good fun, but just for the record, not everyone who is new to GC suffers from a mental handicap. I'm "new," and I only post on things I know about and I try my darnedest to spell everything correctly. Just because my number of posts is low doesn't mean I haven't been reading, or rather "lurking" for muchhhhh longer. Let's just try to avoid broad sweeping generalizations. :p

If you don't like someone on GC - just put them on ignore. And you don't need to announce that you're putting them on ignore, they aren't going to cry, and you're probably achieving the opposite of your desired effect by letting them know that they got to you.

A rule of thumb that I live by is if someone "says" something that ticks me off I'll try reading the rest of their posts. It gives me a feel for their posting style. That way I know if they're a jackass :mad: or just snarky :p!

I am not going to get into a pissing match--the poster said Multicultural Greek Council, not NATIONAL. And when we're talking about the big four councils, I think many would think of NALFO before NMGC.
