Greek Sing

Hi!
I was just looking for new and different ideas for greek sing! ours is coming up pretty quickly when we get back in the fall and I was just wanting to know what other schools did. Last year we did a Sister Act theme and won, and I want to win again! thanks everyone:)

AS someone that went to a school that didn't have a "Greek Sing", can someone explain exactly what it is? Thanks.

It's a singing competition between the Greeks. Even when I was in school, some of the skits were incredibly lavish.

Recently I got together with the woman who was president of Panhellenic at Mississippi State when I was assistant advisor and she reminded me what it was like at the Christmas Sing back in the day. She said, "Don't you remember, most of the sororities would get out there and sing "Rudolph" and then DG would go out there and sing the Hallelujah Chorus with about 16-part harmony?"

So the people that are in it really sing?? It's not one of those little lip-synch skit things? Wow.

Sorry. If you're not familiar, Greek Sing is usually a part of Greek Week*(see below if you're not familiar with that) where fraternities and sororities get together, rewrite lyrics to songs to make them relate to the fraternity/sorority.
Usually they're funny and fun to watch. At my school, we all perform on the same night and watch each other, then we're judged and they declare a winner for boys and then girls.

*Greek week is a week of competition between Greeks. There are fun contests like pudding eating, tugawar, human pyramids, etc. Each event is worth a certain number of points, and the fraternity and sorority with the most points by the end of the week wins. Greek sing is usually a big part of it.

My university JUST had our Greek Sing competition (like...two days ago). This year, our chapter chose to go with a "British Invasion" theme. We put together a medley of songs by British perfomers--Austin Powers theme, Spice Up Your Life (Spice Girls), I Fought the Law (The Clash), Hard Day's Night (Beatles), Wannabe (Spice Girls), and Twist and Shout (Beatles). Five of our sisters dressed up as the Spice Girls. We had a pretty intense dance routine that went with it. Now, we didn't win (we came in last in the sororities), but that was only because the judges couldn't hear us very well (at least, that's what they've told us).

ours was an Arabian Nights theme and it was AWSOME. other themes were "girls just want to have fun," "Space Jam/Aliens," "Runway/Fashion," and i can't think of the others. last year we had a jungle theme, the year before it was a jailhouse/ bad girls theme, and the year before that it was a candyshop theme. super cute.

If you go to http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...=vids.myvideos this is my chapter Greek Sing that just happened like 2 weeks ago. The theme was Spice Girls.

Here is Pike with Candyland http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...oid=2023052555

PiKapp with Pirates of the Carribean (winner in 2006) http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...oid=1360538522

And Kappa Sig with Under the Sea http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...eoid=622991019

Greek Sing is during Greek Week. It just another competition but its so much fun to watch.

My alma mater does it a little differently:

Greek Sing
Greek Sing is an annual event in which the fraternity and sorority community at Carnegie Mellon participate. The event is sponsored by Greek Council and is the Greek community's largest annual philanthropy event. In Greek Sing, fraternity and sorority chapters perform collections of songs or excerpts from a musical or an original script. The event is held at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland, and all proceeds are donated to a charity, which is selected each year by members of the Greek community.
This year Greek Sing was held on March 24, 2007.

We dont have Greek Sing. We have Goat Night (basically the same thing....sort of. There's a banner competition, krystal eatting competition, a skit, and then song and dance). Sigma Nu won this year. I think Pi Kap and Sigma Pi tied for 2nd and AXiD got Third! First time either of the sororities placed in the top 3.

I was only able to record 3 groups (due to memory on my camera), so I got ours, Gamma Phi Beta's, and Sigma Nu's.

Haha....oopps, sorry. Um....Have you ever heard of White Castle? Krystal is another fast food restaraunt that makes mini burgers like white castle. I think Krystal is mostly in the south and east coast. Anyway, that part of the competition is where you eat 6 krystals (thats what the mini burgers are called) as fast as you can, and depending on who finishes first, second etc, is how points are awarded.

On my campus Greek Sing is held in the fall and is not a part of Greek Week. Each NPC/IFC chapter comes up with ideas for themes and then Panhell votes on them. This year it's 90's themes and we're all doing songs/skits from/about the 90's. It should be a blast!

Here's my undergrad chapter's Greek Sing from a few days ago. I'm particularly fond of the first and third songs.

We just had greek sing and we did a mary poppins theme it was really cute. We did that london bridge by fergie, umbrella, pour some sugar on me and we even had a tap dance with penguins. We also did dirty for the chimney sweep part and there is this great supercalifragilistic remix by drino man on myspace.

we should have won, everyone said we should have.

Over the past few years, we have done a sports theme (Eye of the Tiger, Batter Up, We Will Rock You, etc.), a rags to riches theme (Rich Girl, Just Got Paid, Movin' On Up, Mo' Money Mo' Problems, etc.), and a working theme (Working 9 to 5, and some other songs that I can't remember).

Here is me dating myself...

Thriller

We had all but six of us dress as ghouls. We used stage makeup and went to Salvation Army to get some cheap threads. We ran over them with cars and dragged them on the ground and used powder to age them. The other 6 were divided into 3 cheerleader/sorority galls and 3 gals dressed as guys. We did the whole dance from the video and crawled/creaped in slow motion to the words at the end until the 6 were covered.

I wish I had a scanner. The pictures are pretty cool.

Pepperdine has Songfest, which is actually open to the whole school to participate in but is mostly greeks that do. Each team performs a 12 minute skit with original and sampled songs, accompanied by an orchestra, connected by a script each team writes based on the theme for that year's Songfest. In between the team performances, hosts keep the audience entertained with their own performances based on the theme. The show is performed for three or four nights (plus matinees) in front of sell out crowds, and people from the Malibu community even pay to come watch it, and celebrities help judge it. Meetings start in the fall for the spring production, but teams only get two weeks to practice and are limited to a modest budget.

While I was a student, the Songfest themes were Great Inventions one year, a sports one another year, a love theme one year, and I can't remember the other. Here's a video of the hosts performing a skit at Songfest two years ago, which had a "For the Love of the Game" (games) theme:

Super Mario Bros.

ETA: A couple more examples from Pepp's Songfest:

Greek Sing Themes

Hey....I am trying to brainstorm some ideas for greek sing themes. at my school we do it a lot different than others....a fraternity and sorority are paired and it is a 10 min long production, with generally 10 songs spliced together that revolve around a theme/story and the frat/sorority dance to all the songs while sort of putting on a little show....with a few people here and there singing in the midst.

Any great ideas????? I'm fresh out of them.....songs that go with ideas would be most helpful!

Thanks

Chi O till I die-O
