Broadway songs

If anyone has changed the words to a broadway song FOR RECRUITMENT skit can you share? THANKS

ΑΓΔSquirrel10 04-21-2007 02:52 AM

Umm this is the sorority recruitment forum. This stuff belongs in either Chit-Chat or Entertainment.

SWTXBelle 04-22-2007 07:30 AM

I think she is looking for help with recruitment - gathering Broadway songs for a skit. We used "Annie" back in the day - "Somewhere" is the song I remember, but it was soooooo long ago, and I fear today's PNMs aren't familiar with "Annie".

I was Annie way back when - there isn't a song called "Somewhere" in that show! :)

carnation 04-22-2007 05:27 PM

We did "Showboat" and "Flower Drum Song" when I was in the chapter but I doubt many PNMs have seen those either. Almost every sorority had a Broadway skit...Chi O had "Oliver!" and Tri Delt had "Carousel".

NUBlue&Blue 04-22-2007 05:37 PM

We did "The Sound of Kappa" for several years.

ADPiLove 04-22-2007 05:47 PM

It's not Broadway, but we used Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend from Moulin Rouge, and that was a big hit.

Right now, Wicked is really popular - you could even use the song Popular, but I'm not sure how well that would go over, considering that you're saying they'll be popular if they join your sorority, and that they were misfits before.

Rent, of course, but that might be hard to change the lyrics to, and a lot of the songs are fast, but I'm sure you could make it work.

Phantom is always an old classic; a lot of people have at least heard of it. There might be problems with the whole soprano/opera notes though, but you could work through it.

FSUZeta 04-22-2007 05:49 PM

we did my fair zeta. "on the street where zetas live" and "getting to know you" were two of the songs they sang when i was a rushee at fsu. the dg's did pippin.

we changed it to cabaret when i was in the house-"life is a cabaret old chum, when you're a z-t-a."

in the late 80's /early 90's, a lot of zeta chapters did the little mermaid or grease.

There is a song called "Somewhere" in West Side Story, isn't there?

We did a Wizard of Oz skit when I was a senior... Dorothy goes through rush and finds the perfect house for her. We sang "Somewhere There is a DG" and other variations of Wizard songs (Glinda urges her to "Follow Sorority Row," etc.). A couple of years after I graduated my chapter did a song from Chicago in their skit, but I am not sure which one. My chapter did Grease when I rushed back in the day.

It might be fun to do some songs from newer, well-known musicals like Wicked, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Hairspray... I would love to think that every rushee knows her musicals, but it's probably safer to only go with the well-known ones. You could also do a play-off on "I Wanna Be a Producer" from The Producers and make it "I Wanna Be a [insert GLO here]." Just no High School Musical, for the love of all that's holy.

MinDyG probably would have some good ideas for this!

I still have nightmares from the early 80's and the ZTA makeover of CATS. Eww....not one of our finer moments, IMO.

Yes, I know, but we did the version from Moulin Rouge.

OldAOPi 04-23-2007 12:51 AM

Oh, this brings back a lot of memories - songs I hear in the elevator -and think of AOPi songs...

"Girl of AOPI...you'll be one forever" by some crooner and didn't you all have a version of Pass It On?? Not from church camp?

My mom always wanted me to sing "Remember" with my sister - who was a Theta like her = we had different words = she made me do it in front of my own dd, the Theta.... in PUBLIC (you don't say no to my mama, I didn't REALLY sing it)

OldAOPi 04-23-2007 12:52 AM

Not to date our songs - this was back in the dark ages of the late 70's.....we thought we were pretty hot when we changed my junior year to a Grease theme skit and song. :p

AOE2AlphaPhi 04-23-2007 02:26 AM

I was a PNM last year, and I would have liked Annie, the Wizard of Oz or Grease, because everyone knows them. I probably would have thought that it was weird for a chapter to do hairspray or wicked, even though they're big now, because they're still less well known, and even if people know their songs, they're less likely to get the plot. That might just be me though.

SWTXBelle 04-23-2007 07:25 AM

You are, of course, right, Irishpipes - the song was "Maybe". Don't even know where I got "Somewhere" - was I thinking "West Side Story". Don't know - blech.

We didn't, but when my daughter was singing it, I said, "Oh, like Pass It On"...and she had never heard of Pass It On.

I guess they don't sing it at church camp anymore!

FSUZeta 04-23-2007 05:35 PM

omg.....i forgot about "pass it on". during my time at fsu we incorporated a new pref. ceremony and that song was part of the ceremony. i renamed it"the song that goes on and on." not one of my favorites!

SWTXBelle 04-23-2007 05:45 PM

It does rather ruin a song once you sing it for rush - it's hard to remember the "real" words! We used the Theme from Ice Castles (shudder!) at Pref.

I seriously will never remember the "real" words to "Sweet Home Alabama" because it will always be "Sweet Home Delta Gamma" to me!

SWTXBelle 04-24-2007 08:05 AM

Material Girl

"Material Girl" will always be "Sorority Girl" to me . . .I remember . . ."But the girls who get the boys are pledging G Phi B!" and ending with "and I am just a Gamma Phi Girl!"
Ah, the 80s . . .
Oh my gosh. You could do such a great 80s skit . . .I'm thinking of all that great music . . .We also did a version of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".

Honey, it's the same thing - only Nicole Kidman's voice is less annoying than Carol Channing's (actually Carol can sing, but that screechy thing she does is sort of her trademark).

For Good from Wicked makes a great Pref song - especially if two Srs sing it to eachother.

honeychile 04-24-2007 10:13 AM

Was the song from Annie "Tomorrow"? We always tease my roomie's daughter about it, because when she was a baby, my roomie was in a theatre group, doing Annie. As she would sing "The sun will come out...", her baby would say, "Tomowwow." It was hysterical!

We've used "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend", "Pass It On", "Sweet Home ADPi", a particularly horrible version of "People", and many, many more. Ugh.

OldAOPi 04-24-2007 11:26 AM

Let's see - one time when we went out to help AOII recolonize Chi Delta (I think it was around 1980) we had to sing The Rose. Yuck. Took forever - was a little --- s -- l -- o -- w..... Bette Midler we weren't!

Glitter650 04-24-2007 12:29 PM

To the tune of ROXIE from chicago..

The name on everybody's lips is gonna be PHI SIG
the ladies rakin' in the chips are gonna be PHI Sig

On campus we are celebrities that means sombody everyone knows

They're gonna recognize our eyes, our hair, our smile our fun our goals

From just some lowly undergrad we're gonna be PHI SIG

Who says that college life is a boar

and who'd of guessed as friends we'd hang

and start off college with a bang Phi sigma.

We have a song to the rose as well.... it's LLOOONNGG and the words are really nice... but it's the one song that everyone grumbles about when we have to practice it with the new ladies. =)

PeppyGPhiB 04-24-2007 01:28 PM

I don't really get why so many people think "For Good" is good for preference. The words include, "I don't know if I've been changed for the better, but I have been changed for good." Why would you want to tell women during rush that you don't know if your life is better for being a XYZ?

I love "Consider yourself at home" from Oliver!, and "I don't need anything" from Annie, "Somewhere over the rainbow" from WofO, and "One" from A Chorus Line have possibilities. Actually, the more I think of it, I LOVE "One" for a skit.

TSteven 04-24-2007 03:39 PM

A friend of mine's Alpha Phi chapter did "Alpha Phi-ver". As in from the film "Saturday Night Fever". (Not really Broadway, but it took place in New York where Broadway is located.) I remember cause I helped some of the girls learn how to partner disco dance so they could be "the guy". Mind you, this was right after the film came out and while disco was popular.

FSUZeta 04-24-2007 04:36 PM

all i can say is what were we all thinking back then???

sarahanne 04-24-2007 08:10 PM

I'm a summer camp counselor and we sing Pass It On/ The Spark Song. The first time we sang it during the summer, I sang the AOII version of it, oops! I got some weird looks from my campers! The Phi Mu chapter here sings it at their pref tea.

I KNEW I wasn't the only one who did that! REMEMBER was the one I liked - and try to be forced to sing it with your sister, who was singing a black and gold Theta version at the same time....hmmm. I should ask my dd if they have retired that one yet. My mom thought that was so special. I guess she thought if I couldn't be a Theta (they didn't have a chapter where I went to college), then AOII must be OK if they used the same song. Yep, thats what I based it all on, lol.

I have the same problem with that song. I was a member of Rainbow girls (a masonic youth org.) and we have a version of that song... I've frequently used the wrong version for the organization I'm at an event for. :p :o

Gamma Phi Beta has a song called Remember, too. Is it the same song? It's often used at Pref.

SWTXBelle 04-26-2007 07:18 AM

Let's see . . ."Consider Yourself" from OLIVER! would be good . . . we always did a version of George M.Cohen's "H-A-R-R-I-G-A-N", which was from one of his Broadway musicals (G-A-double M - A , P-H-I spells Gamma Phi. Proud of all the loyalty that's in me - wish I had a pin so big it hid me, G-A-double M - A, P-H-I you see, it's a name, grown to fame, since it to our campus came, Gamma Phi for me!) His song "Mary" could be adapted, too.
I think "I joined the circus" from "Barnum" could easily be adapted ( I joined (NAME OF SORORITY) like I wanted to, when I was a kid, climbed aboard that great bandwagon and you bet your life I'm glad I did!) - OH, and "The colors of my life" from the same musical. I think I'm too old - all the Broadway songs I can think of the PNMs probably don't even know.
I love "Popular" from Wicked as a Gamma Phi song, but don't think it really suitable for rush (Gamma Phi - you're gonna be Gamma Phi! . . .but it celebrates the superficial, which of course is not what its all about(!) )
I'm just really no help at all, am I? Oh well . . .

FSUZeta 04-26-2007 07:54 AM

zta has a song entitled, "remember." could we all be singing the same song??

SWTXBelle 04-26-2007 08:38 AM

Maybe . . . here's our version:
Remember . . .Gamma Phi Beta
Remember . . .when you're away
Remember . . .the friends you've made here
and don't forget to come back someday.
Remember the pink carnation
the crescent in the sky
and keep truly ever with you
the memory of Gamma Phi
(we'll remember youuuuuuuuuuu)

sarahanne 04-26-2007 10:20 AM

Our version of Remember is

Remem-mem, remem-mem-mem-ber
AOII, sisters forever
Laughing, singing, doing whatever
We have fun when we’re together
Remem-mem, remem-mem-mem-ber
AOII sisters forever
Laughing singin’, doing whatever
We have fun when we’re together in AOII!
