Badge/Pin Light
Hi everyone! I need some assistance. I am a member of my chapter's House Corporation, and we need to replace our pin light. Any ideas on where I could locate a supplier?
Thank you in advance!! |
What on earth is a pin light?
|
|
Could it possibly be a light shaped like the sorority badge (pin)?
|
Clarification....
I'm so sorry!!!
A pin light is a light shaped like your badge. For example, ours is shaped exactly like the Chi Omega badge, with white round light bulbs in each spot where a pearl/diamond would be. I guess they aren't too common (but every single house on our campus has one--maybe it's just an Indiana thing? And that would explain why I can't locate one...hmmm) :) |
Now that I know what they are, I want one! :)
Look on the back of it and see if you can locate a manufacturer's name. This definitely sounds like a special/made to order sort of thing. |

I thought she just spelled pen incorrectly and was looking for pen lights...
At my old chapter we made our own pin light. We drilled holes into a piece of plywood and stuck christmas lights where the pearls are typically on our pin. It was about a 3 ft x 3 ft replica but I'm curious, how big are these pin lights? And what are they used for? |
I think I'm still confused what it is.
Is it kind of like the Batman signal... except in the shape of your org's pin? |
Please post a picture someone!

http://mypage.iu.edu/~theta/ Their pin, with lights. Though you can't really see the lights in that picture. I thought that was one of the neatest things about the houses at IU, as just about every sorority seemed to have one outside... sometimes even in lieu of letters. |
That's so cool. Now, once we know the answer to the OP's question, we're all going to order them for our chapter houses, aren't we?

Pin Lights at Kentucky
Some (most) of the houses at UK had them too. Here's a picture of Kappa Alpha Theta, where you can see the badge light fairly clearly.
http://www.uky.edu/CampusGuide/images/0125.jpeg http://www.uky.edu/CampusGuide/images/0125.jpeg These have been around FOREVER on campus. I wouldn't have a clue where to order a new one. Maybe a sign / lighting / neon company? |
The Delta Upsilon fraternity chapter at my school has light up badge on their house. I've always thought it was cool.
|
It looks like this is a picture of IU's DZ with their light lit up, on the left:

those are cool!!!
thanks so much for the pictures! |
Yes, thanks for the pictures.
I know this is probably a dumb question to the OP, but did you contact your HQ or IHQ? The two Theta ones look identical which makes me wonder if maybe they're something you'd get internally, rather than having one made. ETA: reading over it, I realize that it seems pretty stupid to point out that something modeled on the same pin would be identical; of course it would. But they even appear to be the same size, which probably wouldn't happen if they were made locally. |

You may remember that the whole Sigma Chi Badge [The House on Woodlawn Avenue] was one large light. [Sorry, don't have a picture of it.] Here is another example. The Pi Beta Phi house at Kentucky with their Arrow. http://www.uky.edu/CampusGuide/images/0123.jpeg |
The houses at Brenau Univ. have lights in the shape of badges. Brenau also had a chapter of Chi Omega that closed a few years ago. Perhaps you could locate that house light and acquire it for your chapter.
|
The AXO House at Arkansas had a gorgeous pin light with big bulbs for each pearl!
|
I just took a picture of my daughter in front of my house with the giant key in the background.
I'd post it, but my daughter is in the picture and I'd cut out too much of the house if I edited her out!:( |

Thank you everyone for your suggestions!! :)
I looked in our House Corp records--it was a gift from our founding sisters in1987. In the records I have, we have no mention of where it was made or by whom. I also spoke with our housemother tonight (she was instrumental in bring Chi Omega to Hanover's campus) and she also mentioned that it was a gift from the girls and that she has no idea where it came from. Like many of you, she suggested that I contact our Executive Headquarters, which I will do tomorrow. Thanks again for your help. I absolutely love our pin light--on a campus with identical (college-owned) houses, it is the only thing that identifies us as Chi Omegas! Luckily we still have one, it's just in such a state of disrepair that I'm hesitant to plug it in--I'm afraid the girls will set the house on fire!! Once I find the information, I will be sure to post it on here--I think there may be some other pin lights ordered in the near future. ;) |
hanover_xo, thanks so much for this thread. I never knew "pin lights" existed.
Since the picture of the KAT pin light was posted, I was hoping to find an ADPi one.. and luckily, we have a chapter at Hanover!! (yes... i am a nerd!) http://www.adpi-phichapter.org/ A picture of their house is on the front page :) |
Pin Lights
If it is just the electrical part that is in disrepair, any electrician could rewire it and put in new light bulb sockets.

These are so beautiful! I've never seen anything like it before. What a great idea.
|
We have one in our Storage Room, but ever since we were forced into a suite, we don't use it. Part of our Senior Project was refinishing it, and I think it's used for Recruitment now.
Ours was made like HBADPi said her house's was. |
Actually it is a Pin or Badge light of course.:)
They are a classy way to show who is living in the House and who is the GLO. The SX house at my alma mater has one made of stainlees with the pin back lit as the items on the pin are painted on. I want to get one for our chapter house as the one we made of wood being outside finally rotted out. Does your school have any type of classes that do wood working or plastic classes? XO should not be that hard to get made and would look great hanging at the house. How about boy friends, or family members who are handy? If it is out of the elements then it can be cut from wood and hung under a pourch over hang.:D |

I really like both the Sigma Kappa & KAT lights...very cool. I'd love to see the XO one, if you have a photo. :) |
Have the badge lights been around University of Kentucky for awhile? I stayed at the Alpha Gam chapter there for a few days while I was in undergrad (this would have been in the early 90s), and I don't recall a badge light on our chapter house...or on any other chapter house either. (Perhaps I just didn't notice??)

If I had any better carpentry skills, that would be really easy to make.

For what it is worth, none of the UK pictures posted in daylight really do the badges justice. Seeing them at night is really amazing. |

Susan314,
If you haven't seen one even in a photo, in the thread on pictures of houses when I think BettyDavisEyes, posted pictures of a bunch of houses by GLO, in the Alpha Gam section there's a picture of a pin light of our badge in the second to bottom picture. I hadn't seen one before, as far as I know, but now I think every chapter should have one. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...sWesleyanU.jpg |
