What is the world going to come to???
With the presidential race coming to a close, I would like you all to ponder this question.
WHAT IF GEORGE BUSH BECOMES OUR NEXT PRESIDENT?? Will affirmative action end? Will women lose the right to choose what they want to do with their bodies? Will I have a job when I graduate? Will the rich become richer and the poor, poorer? Will there be a racial war where dragging deaths and hate crimes go unpunished? While the Democrats have been in power for long time, I think we really need to evaluate the reason for wanting someone in office. Is it because you want a change of face or just because you want to see a new face in office? George W. Bush is NOT representative of the majority of American people. Please people, listen to the facts. Bush can't even form a complete sentence, let alone, state facts. Please everyone, before you vote, think of the consequences. The next president is going to pick the next Supreme Court justices. Think about it - do you really want Bush for 4 years??? |
What is even scarier to think about is this:
What if George Bush DOESN'T become our next president? Will it be worth the effort for those of us who do work for a living to work long hours in high-pressured jobs just to have most of our salary be drained off in taxes that go to unnecessary programs or to programs that suck the work and education ethic out of the human spirit? You wouldn't be Greek if you weren't in college. I am sure many of you are working hard and sacrificing, or have parents and guardians who are, so that you can stay in school. At this point in your lives the term "personal accountability" should mean something to you. Democrat or Republican,, each of us are accountable for what we make of our lives. Just be sure to vote. Now, PLEASE, stay off the politics here and just have ONE place where you can have some fun. |
Hi folks, can I respectfully ask that we take George W. Bush to "chit chat"? Unless we're talking about his Greek affiliation. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
|
alumniwithhightaxes - do you think that your taxes will decrease with Bush?? Unless you're a millonaire, you won't see too much of a tax break. It never fails though, as soon as a Republican takes office, the economy falls, we have a deficit, people are hungry all over the nation, people lose their jobs...when is America going to learn??
|
And for those who plan on voting for Bush, I would wonder what your reason would be? Because I really don't understand. I'm just really trying to get it, all jokes aside.
|
Kuu-kuu, is George Bush greek? If so, what affiliation? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
|
Yes, George W. Bush was greek. He was a Deke. (I think? someone correct me if I'm wrong.) I beleive Gore was greek, but I don't know what affiliation.
By the way....I would love to debate politics with y'all. But this thread belongs in chit chat. If you are really as gung-ho as you sound about this topic, register, and we'll chat there. |
Will I have to move to Canada?
If G. Dubya is elected I will. Ugh...I don't even want to think about it (not Canada...I love Canada! I can't think about GW Daddy's Boy actually becoming president.). Anyway, making this on topic...Was GW or Gore in a fraternity? |
Aurora, I didn't think about that! Maybe I will move to Canada with you come Jan 2001 if Bush is in power! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
|
Actually, I heard if GWB gets elected, he's going to imprison all people who post topics in incorrect forums on message boards.
Go Greek! Go DKE!! Go W!!! |
George Bush was a Skull and Bone (as in the movie "The Skulls") which he openly admits in a recent article in TALK magazine....Tom Hanks is on the cover.
I truly don't think Bush is a representative of the common man. Plus, I was astounded during his interview with Oprah, when she asked about the 144 people executed in Texas - his response - "What about them?" Um...and I also agree that we should move this to Chit Chat. |
Worried,
GW's father is a DKE...GW is Skull and Bone (Yale). Why am I voting for him? I know what he stands for. He supports many things I believe in. Whereas, Mr. Gore, well, what exactly does he stand for? He say he's for smaller government, but he's not. He says he's his own man, but won't be able to win without Bubba. He swore on his sister's deathbed to fight tobacco, yet hires an ex-tobacco CEO to help run his campaign. He says he put corrupt politicians in jail as a reporter, but he didn't. He was present at the creation of the SPR and EITC legislations, but he wasn't (wasn't even a Senator yet for the SPR). You may not like what GW stands for, but, know this, you at least know what it is he does stand for. With Gore? It's a flip of the coin to see what he stands for.... |
GWB was in both Skull and Bones and DEKE. Skull and Bones is different froma fraternity. It is a secret society. His father was also a Bonesman.
|
Worried,
You claim Bush can't form a complete sentence or state facts...obviously questioning his intelligence. Answer this question...which candidate FLUNKED out of divinity school, withdrew from law school due to bad grades, and had a lower GPA in college than his current opponent? Hint: It ain't Dubya. |

If you guys wanna move to Canada - then go. Hey its still a free country! I won't leave the country if Gore is elected, but I will be very disappointed. I don't know why it seems like all Gore people have to pull out the old "GWB can't even complete a whole sentence" --- what about the ISSUES people. And hell yeah - what about those murderers who were given much better treatment than their victims? What about them - did they get what they deserved...NO...because if so they would have died the same way they took the person/PEOPLE they killed if that were the case. What about the ACLU saying "they have rights" --- what rights? You kill a person - you lose those rights. (We're not talking self defense here) The rights they have to live better than many Americans do - with their cable TV, library, access to the internet (there are places in this country that still don't have electricity) and the "right" to die humanely...PUHLEAZZZZE! I'll let this one ride for now - maybe it will be moved to chit chat soon and we can get through the next 13 days without another election thing popping up on GREEK LIFE. GO AMERICA - GO BUSH/CHENEY! ------------------ "Alpha Chi Omega - If you only had 2 wishes, what would your second one be?" |
Bush is a bigot, a hyprocite, insensitive thinkier, anti-homosexual, anti-women, and most importantly anti - American. Whose state ranks 49th in healthcare and education of children. BUSH. Whose state executed the most people ever in US history? BUSH. Basically, if you're a white male and rich, yes, you would want to vote for Bush but the common, everyday American will be in a sad state of affairs if Bush is elected. It will just be a repeat of the old Reagan/Bush days. How can you vote for someone so insenstive to the needs of America? Bush is a racist pig. I'm sorry but I just have to keep it real. No disrespect intended but it is the truth.
|
Well, you were 50/50, I'm not rich....yet. However, I don't want a president in office who believes it is the government that will make me better off. Am I better off than I was 8 years ago (isn't that the Gore Mantra)? Yes, but the government had nothing to do with it, it was hard work and sacrifice to get me where I am today, and more hard work and sacrifice to get where I want to be. It's not the governments money, it's my money that has gotten me to the point I am at today.
If you think Bush is racist, consider the new Gore/NAACP ad about Mr. Byrd's horrific murder in Texas...let's see, 2 of the 3 are sentenced to death, and the third will spend the rest of his life behind bars...Liberals say this murder occurred because there is no Hate Crime law in Texas (which is not true, there is one, just not one the Liberals wanted). I'm not sure what a new liberal-based law would have added to this, unless maybe shooting the corpses of the executed? I look at your two arguments differently....what state has the highest ranked black and white fourth graders in math? BUSH. Hispanics are fourth in BUSH's state. What state has made the greatest GAINS in healthcare and education since replacing a previous (LIBERAL DEMOCRAT) governor? BUSH. Which governor has not turned away from one of the gravest duties in carrying out the ultimate punishment for criminals (AND, had a dramatic DECREASE in crime in the state)? BUSH. Insenstive to the needs of America? Gee, how good has Clinton done with our military? From LBJ to Bush (Sr.), we deployed our military for 10 actions, including Vietnam, Gulf War, Grenada, Panama, etc....Clinton/Gore has sent out troops out OVER 30 TIMES. For what? They went to Bosnia in 1996, for a one-year peacekeeping/nation-building mission, per Clinton. They are still there! I am a veteran, with many friends and relatives in uniform. I NEVER hear anything positive regarding the morale and state of our military from them, only complaints and exhaustion, and tired of equipment not working. Is that what you want for our military? One last item: I will agree on one thing (so pay attention, it might be the only one)...the government has no right getting involved in abortion. I am firmly pro-life in my personal convictions, but, the government has no business getting involved in this most personal of issues. I do not like Cheney. He voted against the South African embargo during apartheid and called Mandela and the ANC a terrorist. Do we want this man to represent us. A man who approve apartheid?

Um don't forget this lovely quote:
"Whether Mormon, Methodist, Jewish, or Muslim, Americans should be able to participate in their constitutional free exercise of religion. I do not think witchcraft is a religion, and I do not think it is in any way appropriate for the U.S. military to promote it."--GW Bush I think I have a slight problem with that. Witchcraft is a recognized and protected religion in the US--as of 1985. I guess we AREN'T given the freedom to worship or practice what we want, especially if we are in the military. LXA--I think the government has no business getting involoved in THIS most personal issue-- RELIGION [This message has been edited by mgdzkm433 (edited October 26, 2000).] |

Racial issues, don't get me started. As a matter of fact, one of those convicted in the dragging death of Mr. Byrd was from my hometown. Gains in healthcare and education? Where? I see high school and middle school drop-outs everyday. Teen pregnancy is rampant. The increase I have seen is in the number of executions and highway construction. I don't think Bush wants to really be president, just wants to ride on Daddy's coat tails. So Bush definitely will not get my vote! |

Well, crime has gone down 15% in the state of Texas (which is a higher decrease than the national average)...Texas has helped approximately 500,000 people off of welfare, two million new jobs have been created in Texas, over 50,000 uninsured Texas children have been added to state health care assistance, all under Bush's watch.
But hey, don't take my word for any of this. Where did I find this information? Here's the true irony of Gore's campaign...the above information comes from the White House website section that lists "Clinton-Gore administration accomplishments" state by state... Now, I'm not a Texan, though I was born there (thanks to the military, and we moved when I was but 2 months old)...but I'll take someone who shows results over someone who is campaigning for the third straight time on the same issues he has failed to fix two times before. I may not agree 100% with everything Bush stands for, but I do know what he does stand for. With Gore, it depends on the hour, day, and minute, and poll results for him to embrace an issue. That is not leadership in my opinion. Sorry. |
How hard is it to move to canada from the US and become a citizen? I've actually thought of doing this. We are also--believe it or not--thinking about moving to Korea (but not becoming citizens). Bryan could take on a job there teaching korean students english. . .how exciting!???!

This is the oath you'll have to take. How do you feel about having to pledge allegiance to a Queen? Queen Elizabeth the 2nd is Queen of England and also Queen of Canada. |
I would have to look into laws in canada before I could take an oath, it all depends on whether or not I agree with them. If I don't, then I wouldn't move, if I did, then I wouldn't have any problems with taking such an oath.

I have actually read in the Education Journals that Texas schools are making a come up. I did a research paper on this last year. However, Bush will not get my vote.

I remember when I was a little kidlet & we took standardized tests - we never even knew it was happening till it got plopped on our desk, & then we were "yeah, whatever." The point of tests like these is not only showing what you learned, it's that you learned how to learn and can apply it in different situations. But in defense of the TAAS emphasis, people keep screaming at schools to show them numbers and results. How do you show them a kid who is now interested in science, or learned to read, or had his general intellectual curiousity awakened, because of a great teacher? You can't show that on paper. The only thing you can show is test scores. I wish people would wake up and realize how useless and stupid numbers and statistics are! Oh....ooops...this doesn't have anything to do with Bush & Gore, does it?? |
LXAAlum, Thanks for the info on where to find the statistics.
The reason I say crime has not decreased? I used to work as a dispatcher for the local police department. Why education is declining? I have been a substitute teacher for the past 2 years and see kids who can't name a state capital or point out Italy on a map. Why aren't these things taught. Too much emphasis is put on TAAS tests for students to graduate. Beginning freshmen year of high school, students are put in TAAS preparation classes. The school district reinforces this because the fewer students that pass the less money/assistance the district gets. I also used to help college students who couldn't pass beginning algebra. To be honest, neither candidate has blown me away. But I am more leery of Bush, than Gore. Most people I speak to about voting are going by what they see or how their life is affected everyday. I don't really consider polls when evaluating candidates for any position because they are just "snapshots" of how people feel at a particular moment. I don't know who the phone polls interview because it's certainly not anyone I know. If anyone has actually participated in these polls let me know. ------------------ Sisterhood, Scholarship, & Service Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER! as of this moment, I am still undecided. But...
in response to the comments about Bush's performance in Texas: the bill that was passed in the last Texas legislative session that brought healthcare to thousands of needy children.... was violently lobbied AGAINST by the Bush camp and Republican legislators. It passed anyway, despite his efforts. I do have a problem with Bush claiming on national TV that the CHIP bill was "HIS" doing, when he actually was one of the strongest opponents.... and... Bush DID also say during the second debate that Texas passed a "hate crimes" bill, alluding that it was his tenure as governor we have to thank for the bill. Texas does NOT have any "hate crimes" legislation or law, courtesy of Bush's actions during the last legislative session. He was intentionally misleading on that issue during the 2nd debate. I don't have a problem with either position on the hate crimes issue... but I do dislike the misrepresentation that has been consistent throughout Bush's campaign. |
33girl,
No, I did not catch that episode and I wish I had. I had no problem passing all three parts of the TAAS the first time. I just hate to see students bust their butts to pass regular classes but can't graduate with friends because they were one or two points short of the minimum passing requirement. I also remember having tests just dumped on us when I was in elementary school. Anyone remember the California Achievement Test or "CAT"? |
I believe both candidates have misrepresented the facts. They are politicians. Although I tend to stick with G.W. Bush because I know where he stands(Bad or Good) on issues rather than Gore. He would make a dynamite Commander in Chief. In my opinion I also feel that Bush is more of a humble man than Gore who I think is quite the opposite. I just wonder about Gore sometimes and I think he is too power hungry in terms of Government. My vote is definitely with Bush and I believe he is by far a better choice.
|
I think both candidate suck. Both the Democrat and Republican party are to blame for the apathy of the American public toward politics. It's time we let other in ball game. Whether Reform, Green, Constitution, etc. Why is it that they are afraid to debate other parties. I know it will be more interesting if we have three or four people debating. Bore and Hush are pretty much the same. 'Cept the rhetoric are different. Imagine if Nader and Buchanan are put in the debate with Bore and Hush. You will definately see a difference. I'm voting NADER. And for NY Senate, Clinton, cause Lazio is a biggot.
|
I'm with ya on Nader. If I vote, I'm voting for him. I'm not going to vote in the WV elections. I'm not giving my vote away. WV candidates actually campain to allow prayer in school and posting the ten commandments. It's rediculous. I'm not supporting that.
|
I was just about to ask if anyone was thinking of Nader. How old is that guy anyway? Hasn't he run for president the past 3 or 4 times? Anyway, for the most part, I like Nader. Of course, I often think I should be the leader of the universe, but if it can't be me, might as well choose the best alternative I can find.
Secret? I voted democratic socialist in '96. I've calmed down a little (was a junior at a hippy liberal arts school at the time), but I still lean left, so I like Nader. But then I know that, in all reality, voting for Nader is like wasting a vote. I used to think "a vote for a candidate you don't really want is what is truly a wasted vote." But that was just a pretty cliche. Neither Nader nor any candidate like him will be president in all my years on earth, so I might as well choose the democrat in "the closest race in 40 years" and feel like my vote is actually going to make a difference. And wow! I didn't know Canada and England shared a queen. I didn't even know Canada had a queen! I thought they just had a prime minister and that was it.
