Delta Sigma Theta and U of Alabama -a connection?
Good evening, ladies. I have a question.
I have a friend who attends U of Alabama. One of their school colors is crimson and their mascot is the elephant. There's a sorority on my campus called Delta Sigma Theta. One of their colors is crimson and they have an elephant as their symbol. I have a question. Is there any connection? Was Delta founded there? |
YES! You are so astute!
In 1942, seven women known as the Carnations of Delta Sigma Theta established the sorority at Alabama. |
The Greek Life mods should move this thread over to the DST forum. You should go ask the ladies of DST there.
|
And when we get initiated? The zoo gives each of us our own elephants to have forever and ever. Amen!:D
|
huh?

2) Now, do you "adopt" the elephants and visit them at the zoo? Or do you get to actually keep them? Your Carnations must be proud! |

We only pay $1 per year to board them at the zoo, but yes they are ours to keep forever and ever. Amen. Our initiation ceremony takes place at the zoo and if your chapter does at least 40,000 hours of services each year? Your $1 is waived and the chapter gets a free trip to Africa. And our jewel? The tusk of an elephant on barbed wire to display our real STRENGTH. |

You need to stick with me, this is what my doctoral disseration is on. The founder of AKA was Madam CJ Walker, who had 8 daughters. Each daughter attended a different Ivy League college (or in some cases, their female counter part, like Radcliffe or Barnard). Well, Walker's daughters joined forces with their mom and established the first sorority for black women. Incidentally, each daughter married an Alpha founder, except for the Yale daughter, who got stuck with a Sigma. |

Then you enter a search term such as, oh, I don't know, AKA? |

Sigmas and Alphas have a good-natured rivalry. It has to do with sharing the pyramids, I think. |

Kind of an integrated search/chat thingy. |

but a quick search of the term "ivy league" should explain to you why they're called the ivy league, just as a quick visit to the Alpha Kappa Alpha website would prove extremely enlightening, I'm sure, as to any connection with harvard, yale, princeton, etc. trust me, you'll be doing yourself a favor. |

Ummm...hmmmm...NO! |
I am mad that y'all didn't let the official Delta historian answer.
FutureGreek1, yes we were founded at the Crimson Tide. And yes that is where we got one of our colors and our official mascot. Good analyzing. We were Alabama's second Black sorority and they welcomed us with open arms. The feeling has been mutual every since. As for the AKAs, they too were founded at Alabama. But because they did not honor the school by using their color, some of them broke off and founded Delta. Hopethis helps. And Mr. I--stay out of Delta business!!!  |

Yes! AKA is only for people at Ivy Leauge schools....duh! You are a lot smarter than ther other people interested in greek life. The cone on GC afraid to ask us questions and they use stupid search engines for information. Fees start at $10,000 since we can afford to go to Ivy leauge schools we can afford paying top dollar! |
