What instrument did you play...

when you were in high and/or middle school?

I'm representing for all of the clarinets!!

One more question... Do you think you can still play a song? (Drummers don't count http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif !)

SilverTurtle 09-19-2000 12:26 AM

It's all about the TUBA, baby!!

I actually majored in tuba performance my first 2 1/2 years at school!

Silver Turtle, my brother plays the Tuba http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I used to play the Viola. I also play the piano. I continued with the piano because it didn't sound like I was torturing an animal. LOL. I'm also learning how to play guitar.

mwedzi 09-19-2000 01:45 AM

You all are so lucky. I always wanted to learn an instrument as a child, but my parents could never afford it and there were no school-sponsored free lessons where I lived. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif I envy you.

ZetaAce 09-19-2000 07:07 AM

I played the Piano, French Horn, and the clarinet.

And yes, I can definitely still play http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

thatgirl 09-19-2000 09:27 AM

OH. ANOTHER CLARINET RIGHT HERE!!! I think I can still play 'Under The Sea', and maybe that one Grand Overture that I can't remember the name of. I probably WOULDN'T play them, but I could if I wanted to.

c&c1913 09-19-2000 10:50 AM

mwedzi,

It's not too late if you want to learn to play an instrument. I'm 23 and I've always wanted to learn to play the piano. My mom plays by ear (and beautifully I might add http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif ), so she can't teach me. I started taking private piano lessons this summer. People kept telling I was too old, but I didn't care. I thought I'd better do it now while I have the money and time (no kids or husband).

You may want to check with a local college, community college, or technical center. I know where I live occassionally they have a course or session for musical instruments.

mgdzkm433 09-19-2000 11:10 AM

I have played the piano since I was 5, I started playing the flute in 5th grade--it turned out to be my major in college, the piccolo since in 11th grade (which is pretty much like the flute, but there are a couple differences), and I know a bit of oboe, clarinet, and trumpet . . . just stuff I picked up along the way. Oh, and in high school marching band, I played the flute 2 years and piccolo 2 years, and marched in the color guard for one year. I was a band geek and I admit it! I still attend high school football games just to see the band!

cash78mere 09-19-2000 07:30 PM

Another clarinetist right here! (B flat, E flat and bass)

I can also hold my own on the flute and saxophone and have TRIED to figure out the oboe and bassoon but that didn't turn out too well....... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif i can also play the piano decently. i used to play the violin but stopped when i couldn't figure out the whole vibrato thing.

as you can tell, i LOVE instruments!!! (but don't ever put me in front of the drums or a brass instrument or you'll be really sorry!)

MaMaBuddha 09-20-2000 02:28 PM

hey..i can hum

does that count for anything?

prettypoodle6 09-20-2000 07:45 PM

flute and the piano.......

I still know my notes, but I'd be hella slllllloooow trying to actually playing them!

straightBOS 09-20-2000 09:45 PM

I don't want to boast and brag about my music genius, but I can play a mean version of "Chopsticks"

J/K...I just had to post because I was feeling left out.

12dn94dst 09-21-2000 10:16 PM

Yet another clarinetist! **fondly remembering my days as a marching tiger at SSU**

BFulton 09-21-2000 10:51 PM

Flute! (That came about after a year on clarinet, which is what I'd "tested" into. I was bound-and-determined to play flute instead... and talked my band director into letting me try it and prove I could make sounds come out of a flute! Hmm.. sometimes people still call me stubborn. lol)

I have it under my desk and can still play a few fight songs that were drilled into my muscle memory. But that's about it. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

(Also a color guard "veteran!" Anyone else have to march in those awful short leather boots with the hard soles???)

I was in the color guard my senior year. I had so much fun, I wish I had tried out before then. We didn't wear boots, we got new outfits that year that looked better with Keds.

I began playing the clarinet in the sixth grade. I was also a member of the color guard all four years of high school. It was so much fun.

Alto and tenor saxaphone and mellophone - another band geek checks in.

Speaking of marching bands, any DCI fans out there? Go SCV!

mgdzkm433 09-22-2000 04:34 PM

Oh my DCI!!!!! The year I was in the color guard, our instructor was from the Cavaliers, and I loved Madison Scouts! They were both sharp!

LXAAlum 09-22-2000 05:21 PM

Mikki,
Did you know Cavies tied for first this year? Saw them in Denver this summer at DATR - AWESOME show. My favorite is still SCV - though cavs, troopers, scouts, and phantom regiment are also very good.

juniorgrrl 09-22-2000 06:47 PM

I took piano lessons for 3 years, but somehow got away with never having to learn how to read music. My teacher would just fill in the letters above each note. I really regret that now.

My other connection to the music world is I'm a marching band widow. My boyfriend of 3 years is a member of the LSU Golden Band From Tigerland. I vascilate between being so proud of him and hating the whole thing for taking up so much time http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. Any other band/non-band relationships out there that are like this?

equeen 09-23-2000 03:28 PM

I played piano for a while when I was in elementary school, then violin in jr. high and some of high school. I sorta picked up the viola on a lark - actually, it's my favorite instrument! MaMaBuddha, humming counts for sure, as a form of singing! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif I took formal training for a while in north Indian classical music, which was *really* cool. Of anything I learned, I still sing the best. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

2 years of Clarinet in junior high and 2 years of Tenor Sax. I got into H.S. football so there wasnt the time for me to be in band. I must say Tenor Sax was my favorite instrument.

http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif aawww man....you had to go there....it wasn't my choice to play clarinet. i wanted to play drums, but i was told, by one of my parents, "girls don't play the drums. girls only play flute and clarinet" ain't that some mess?? but yeah, i have to give mad props to the ladies holdin it down in the brass section, ESPECIALLY those holding it down in an HBCU band.

mgdzkm433 10-05-2000 09:44 AM

Ok, I'm a woodwind player, majored in flute. And here's a little known fact, the flute takes more air than any other instrument. Why? Because only about 33% of the air coming from the mouth actually goes into the instrument--flute players have to have lungs of steel and unbelievable control. You have to give us props for that. I've seen 'big bad' tuba players say they could handle it, then get dizzy and light headed when they try. So there! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif LOL

MIDWESTDIVA 10-06-2000 08:35 PM

Okay, Okay,

I will take this opportunity to give all the ladies of the woodwind family their props. I remember getting light headed when I tried to play a flute. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

And, yes I have to give all our HBCU bands their props as well, especially FAMU!

I have to agree with Mgdzkm433 you have to have good lungs and poise to play the flute especially in a marching band. I have played flute, recorder and piccolo for over 25 years (started in junior high continued through high school). I also played saxophone and drums in high school (four years). My favorite will always be the flute.

Woodwinds and strings--Flute (Elem tru HS) and Violin(Elem tru JH) and later the piano also elem chorus and church choir, if those count for anything. Marching band and concert band. I was a busy kid http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Almost forgot, piccolo for a hot minute but gave it up because I'd practically pass out after about playing for 60 seconds! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Let's here it for the FLUTE players. I played from middle school throughout high school. Went to competitions all over the state even was section leader of the year as well as Outstanding Junior and Senior. Every now and then, I play at weddings and at my church, as long as I have enough advance notice! That was before I moved to Kansas.

I have to give a shout out to the "Silver Streaks" in the Jackson State University "Sonic Boom of the South!"

Dewgirl 10-19-2000 01:26 AM

This is a little outdated, but I saw a DCI reference!!! Love to the Madison Scouts, I have a lot of friends who were or are in there and they will NEVER WALK ALONE!!! also to Pioneer.

I was a voice major for a few years in college, but I played Trombone for about 8 weeks in 5th grade if that counts!

I played the flute 7-9th grade. I was a natural and was super at it - not trying to brag, because at the time, I didn't see how good I was - I just hated it all the time 'cause of my band director who would yell "JUDAS PRIEST" at us if someone messed up. Plus my best friend wouldn't speak to me for a year because we had to have a competition for each instrument to see who would be first chair, and I always won while she would be 5th or 6th - it is a very sad memory http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif What is even worse is that I gave it up. Now I can't play a note on it. I've thought about taking lessons again, but who has the time? And of course I was a spoiled rotten brat who didnt' want a used one - so my parents shelled out $400 bucks for a brand new one with a pretty blue velvet case because they thought it would keep me playing. How many times has that thought bothered me!

On a happier note - I loved being in colorguard. I did flag my first year, and rifle and flag my senior year. I still have both (and play with them more than I'd like to admit). I used to love to make up routines and stuff. And yes I hated the boots, but what I hated more was the tacks we had to put in the bottom to make us "click" when we marched, and the huge ball of green & white yarn we had to tie to the front. Of course the suntan colored hose on all our pasty white legs were very attractive also http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I began playing the clarinet in the 6th grade and was quite good until they started throwing music at me every which way I looked. I wanted to play the drums but my mama did not want to "hear all that noise."  Anyway I played what my daddy played.

I remember we played the theme songs from Peter Gunn, Sanford & Son, Cosby Show (one of the seasons), and some other tunes.

My kids will play INSTRUMENTS, at least 2 per kid. Piano for all. :D I might give birth to the next Alicia Keys or Roberta Flack.

Phew! A DCI fan! I have a lot of old finals tapes: 89, 92, 97, 99, 00 and 01.

This year sucked. Cavaliers won without even playing music, BD played Channel One Suite and got 2nd and Madison missed finals for the first time in a while.

I'll one-up you on the non-girly instruments :D...

I was a percussionist for 11 years.

I started in 6th grade, played all through junior high and high school, and went on to major in percussion and music ed. in college. At the end of college, I decided I wanted nothing to do with being a professional percussionist and went to library school and started studying voice. I still sing, and I'm thinking about maybe playing percussion in a community orchestra when I move.

Starlet 08-11-2002 09:20 PM

I played the piano for a little over 4 years, but I never practiced, so it basically became a waste of money when I'd go into my private lesson and have to play the same piece I was supposed to practice during the entire lesson! Thus, I stopped taking lessons. I've also played the recorder in elementary school like everyone else...does that count?!

If I could learn one instrument now, I'd love to learn how to play the guitar.

S_A_I 08-11-2002 09:37 PM

I play piano, saxophone, and clarinet. Clarinet is my main instrument, though! I've played up until this year - 2 years in the University of Tennessee band. But I'm giving it up this coming year. Yah for band geeks! :D

pbear19 08-11-2002 09:37 PM

Hmm. let's see. Flute, piccolo, & one semester of oboe in symphonic band, tenor sax and soprano sax in jazz band, and tim toms in marching band. When I was a senior in high school I had a little fan club of some freshmen guys in band, cause I was the cheerleader that played the drums. :D
