Random Information You Learned on or because of GreekChat

Obviously, we probably expect to learn Greek related stuff here, but the recent "I don't have a lease; can my landlord kick me out?" thread made me think about how many random non-greek-related bits of information I had either learned directly here: AKAMonet's gracious tutorial about food safety and cloning, or that I looked up because of something I read here: the definition of negligent homicide, Georgia eviction laws, etc.

What's the most random, not Greek related thing that you have learned on GreekChat?

(And no, I didn't search before to see if this thread already existed. Just let me know and I'll delete it.)

No one should have learned anything from the "can my landlord kick me out" thread except that they should consult someone who knows the local law.

UGAalum94 03-27-2007 10:23 PM

Right, but the thread caused me to look up the local laws, and I think that happens with a lot of issues on GreekChat.

This is one I started ages ago:

http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...e+learned+from

...but it's really old! It'd be great to hear what else people have learned since then. As for me, the non-Greek stuff I've learned here has either been latebreaking news or shockingly off color stuff about my husband always asks,"Did you learn that on Greek Chat?":D

KSUViolet06 03-27-2007 10:44 PM

That the "brothel law" is just a myth!

Dionysus 03-27-2007 10:50 PM

Some job/career related things.

Lots of good recipes.

LOTS of sex stuff...except for the pegging, thank one of my pledge daughters for showing me that (porn, not actual technique), lol.

I totally understand this. As I was commenting on a thread today, I thought to myself, "why in the world am I commenting about people masturbating in public?" I mean, it was about a news story and it is interesting from a sociological perspective to wonder why we usually hear about men doing stuff and not women, but really, it's kind of inappropriate never-the-less, and yet, EVERYTHING gets talked about on GC.

ETA: Ew, just looked up "pegging" on urbandictionary.com. Thanks a lot, Dionysus. At least, thank goodness, there were no illustrations.

texas*princess 03-27-2007 11:26 PM

I learned about territorial waters :D

BetteDavisEyes 03-28-2007 12:02 AM

Pegging (though I could have lived without learning what that was all about)

KSig RC 03-28-2007 12:33 AM

I learned most people are 30% as smart as they think they are, but are 90% more opinionated.

I love it.

I learned that there really are crazy people out there just bursting at the seams to live out their college dream of being in an NPC sorority. (Ok, still Greek-related, but not a normal "GLO Fact".)

jwright25 03-28-2007 08:46 AM

I learned that you should do your cardio exercise after strength training so that the weightlifting burns the glycogen stores in your muscles (carbs) and the cardio burns the fat off your body.

DolphinChicaDDD 03-28-2007 11:22 AM

How good some people are at stalking.

How badly a site can go to hell when the owner doesn't bother to keep up with it.

SydneyK 03-28-2007 12:14 PM

I learned that Ctrl + Scrolly-wheel is like a zoom function.

I learned that it's better to drink beer out of a glass because that way I won't get bloated.

Don't forget that drinking it out of a bottle makes you tacky or trashy. I can't remember which. Maybe both.

AlexMack 03-28-2007 03:10 PM

Hoodies are NF! Also that people actually do get dressed up for football games and going to class, though why this is done is beyond me.

Make sure we go telling all the chicks at Nashville's that when you get here.

I haven't heard or seen Kili in forever -- but I'll make sure she comes out when you're here!

UGAalum94 03-28-2007 05:52 PM

I was thinking about the whole Rwanda tribal identity as a product of colonization thing that I think Centaur, was it you who set me straight on? How did that come up on GreekChat?

What issues were you talking about that revealed this data?
It seems like it would be unlikely to reveal itself in the recruitment threads, but maybe I'm wrong.

AUDeltaGam 03-28-2007 06:44 PM

...that the University of West Alabama exists.

And I lived in Alabama for 4 years!

Yes it was me and I cannot remember how that came up. But it's true :D A lot of people prefer to ignore the truth and pretend that white history is always correct and there aren't many books on it but what you can find will corroborate it.

CutiePie2000 03-29-2007 02:12 AM

I learned that a "pineapple" is a symbol of hospitality / welcoming at someone's house in The South.

I think I also got a better idea of what Southerners consider iced tea.

I had never heard of "Cold Stone Creamery" until I saw it discussed on GC (hey, we don't have it here in Maple Leaf Land). We *DO* however, have "Marble Slab" Creamery.

Tom Earp 03-30-2007 05:59 PM

Off of the LXA Thread about History that I missed.

The History that I have learned about all Greeks.

The ass wholes who have signatures that or cheep crap and continually still do it!

But for the most part, GCers are great people even thouhg more and more leave and do not post anymore.

Learning about people and others Organizatrions which is a big help for all of us!
