Cheerleader U
It follows the 16 time UCA National Champion University of Kentucky cheerleading squad from tryouts to Nationals in Orlando. I figured I'd make a thead about it since I know alot of people on here watched Cheerleader Nation on Lifetime when it was on.
It airs Wednesdays @ 10 on WE. |

The University of Kentucky Cheerleading Squad No other college cheerleading squad has dominated the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Championships like the team from Kentucky. The UK squad has won UCA's National College Cheerleading Championship an unprecedented fifteen (15) times, in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006 - more than any other Division 1A school. UK's squad is the only team to win back to back championships twice, once in 1987 and 1988 and again in 1995 and 1996. Further, UK is the only squad ever to win three, four, five, six, seven and eight championships in a row. UK's eight year streak of championships was broken in 2003 when they finished runner up to Central Florida. They regained the title in January, 2004 and won their third straight in 2006. Central Florida regained the championship in 2007 when UK finished in third place. The UK Cheer Program is recognized in cheerleading circles as perhaps the finest cheer program in America as the squad has placed first 15 times and placed second four times in the National Championships. The squad also generates vocal support and significant enthusiasm for some of the finest athletic programs in the nation. The Wildcat basketball team is the winningest college basketball program in the nation and has won the NCAA National Championship seven times! In December, 1999, the Wildcat football team made its second consecutive bowl appearance. The squad receives substantial media exposure. Having finished in the top ten every year since the existence of the UCA National College Championships, each year the UK squad is seen on the ESPN televised Championships Program, which airs at least eight times nationally. In addition, the UK squad is seen on television as every UK basketball game is televised and a national or regional audience sees the majority of games. The squad is frequently the subject of highlight stories by television and radio stations and newspapers. The squad has been featured on the "CBS Evening News," Connie Chung's "Eye to Eye," and the "CBS Morning Show", in "Southern Living" and "Gentlemen's Quarterly," "ESPN the Magazine," and "Seventeen" magazines. The cheerleaders regularly attend University Athletics Association and Alumni Association functions. They represent the University at many charitable and public relations' events. The cheerleaders have performed at the half time of the Denver Nuggets (coached by UK graduate, Dan Issel) and the Miami Heat (formerly coached by UK graduate, Pat Riley) game and then appeared at the Denver UK Alumni Club function. On the UK campus, UK cheerleaders are recognized as some of the finest athletes in the University's sports programs, as intelligent and outgoing students in the classroom, and as public relations ambassadors of the University of Kentucky and the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky. |
Wow. I stand corrected!
My mom's a coach, so we've always followed the big championships (UCA HS & College championships). I wonder sometimes HOW they managed to win every year. When they finished 2nd behind UCF in I think 2003 my mom and I were stunned. |

So how was the program? WE Network isn't part of the local cable package so I wasn't able to catch it. Last I heard, some local UK Alumni were Tivo'ing it to show at one of our alumni functions later this year. |
I'm pretty sure they go out and recruit just like the coaches do. Looking at their roster, they seem to attract students from all over the country. I've always heard Kentucky's Cheer Squads were the best.

I caught it. I thought it was ok, what I expected. **Spoiler Alert** It's short but if you dont want to know, skip my post. FYI, WE is running the episode over and over until the new episode so you still have a chance to catch it. :) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * They showed the clinics for tryouts. There were more girls than guys (not surprising) and the coaches made cuts. A lot of HS seniors were there and one girl said if she didn’t make the squad (blue squad assume) she wasn't going to the school. Every one had to try out including returning members. One girl from the white squad who was trying out for the blue squad, got dropped. Not a happy camper. I will say though, the coach handled it well. He pulled her aside and told her by herself. What the coaches did for every one was post the numbers of the kids who were cut. It gives them some anonymity. Still sucks though. |
Yeah! I'm excited. I loved Cheerleader Nation :D
Another cheer show for me to watch. Now I just need to figure out 1) if I get WE with my digital cable and 2) if I do, what channel it is ;) |
Is the girl Ashley who made the white squad in episode two the same Ashley from Cheerleader Nation? She looks the same ...

I can't find any listings for the new season of Cheerleader nation. Can you post the link? I am going on vacation and want to TiVO it while I am gone.

I think that I read on the athletics page of our Ohio University website that the Bobcat cheerleaders are going to the competition.
I'm not aware that they've ever done that before. Kentucky is one of Ohio's southern border states. Maybe something rubbed off. |

From varsity.com (the site of UCA-the company that hosts the college cheer championship): http://www.varsity.com/index.asp?article=3283 "The University of Central Florida, this season's featured squad on WE tv's Cheerleader U, just returned from UCA college camp at the University of Alabama. They had a very successful week, taking first place in Fight Song and Cheer and placing second in Sideline. They also took home a Traditions Award. Don't forget to watch Cheerleader U, which airs on WE starting August 2, 2007. More updates on UCF in the coming weeks..." |

Release: 11/05/2007 COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State cheerleaders once again have qualified for the 2008 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship at the Walt Disney World Resort, Jan. 20, 2008. The national championship will be held at Disney’s MGM Studios and Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Ohio State qualified for the national championship by winning the Northeast Region for the 19th time in the last 21 years, defeating Penn State, Cincinnati, Ohio University and Syracuse. “Our squad works very hard to put an entry together and the team is deserving of its regional win,” Judy Bunting, head cheerleading coach, said. “We look forward to the national championship in January and we will have to continue to work hard to develop our routine and execute it well at nationals against some very stiff competition. I think our tumbling is definitely stronger this year and we still are very strong in partner stunting and pyramids.” By winning their region, the Buckeyes received an automatic bid to the national competition, as well as free transportation and hotel accommodations. Ohio State joins Minnesota (Mid-America Region), Kentucky (South Region) and Hawaii (West Region) as regional champions. The other four at-large bids went to Central Florida, Alabama, LSU and Memphis. Ohio State finished 14th at the 2007 national championship and 12th in 2006. The Buckeyes were sixth in 2005 after placing 15th in 2004, seventh in 2003 and sixth in 2002. The Buckeyes earned a second-place finish in 2001 and placed sixth in 2000. Ohio State won the 1993 College Cheerleading National Championship. The national competition will be televised by the ESPN networks and aired at a later date. |
^^ That's great. OSU always does well at nationals. They've finished in the top 20 for 2 years, and were 6th in 2005.
I think everyone who's into cheerleading will be waiting to see if Kentucky gets back on top or if UCF can prove that their win wasn't a fluke (due to UK's major fall on their ending pyramid) and repeat. |
I'm sure that Kentucky will be eager to regain the championship this year. It should be an outstanding competition.

WG Coeds Win 7th Championship January 19, 2008 - The dynasty continues, as the West Georgia Coed Cheerleaders took the stage Saturday, knowing that a bull’s eye was on their backs. The squad won, completing a weekend that saw both UWG teams bring home the hardware for the third straight year.
