MTV's Engaged & Underage

Anybody watch this? It boggles my mind why someone would get married at 19. Anybody think any of those couples will make it?

A lot of people I knew got married right after high school.

Wanna know how many of those couples are still together?

Zero.

And all marriages lasted less than 2 years.

I know my grandma got married when she was 17.... but that was a LOOOOOOONG TIME AGO. Times have changed

preciousjeni 03-04-2007 11:33 PM

My best friend from high school was married right after she turned 19. Ten years later, they're together with a nice house, two cars and twin baby girls! And, both are college graduates. It really depends on why you've made the decision to get married in the first place and how mature you are at a younger age.

KatieKate1244 03-04-2007 11:40 PM

I'm addicted to this show. I agree with KSUViolet about being mind-boggled by people getting married at age 19. And from most of the people shown, I don't see many lasting more than a few years. They don't seem mature enough for the realities of marriage.

The Army guy and the girl from Cleveland stand out in terms of immaturity (I think they were Jen & Jake). That girl is one of those girls who is all whiny and has a "ME ME ME ME" attitude. Marriage isn't all about you. Not to mention, the guy told her "you are the most annoying thing God has ever created."

That's the episode I was thinking about! The other one that comes to mind is the blonde girl and the guy who was really close to his brothers. I don't think he was feeling the whole marriage thing that well.

KSUViolet06 03-05-2007 12:29 AM

Also, a few of those couples are the type of Christian couple who doesn't believe in sex before marriage. You could totally tell with them that they are getting married just so they can have sex, I think there was actually one girl (I think it was Chantel & Jacob or Bre & Josh) who when asked by her mom if that was why she was getting married, she admitted that it was a huge part of it.

Next week's episode looks TRASHtastic. They have 2 small children and it appears that they live with her mother.

None of these couples are "underage"

I noticed that. I think with this show, underage= under 21.

I am part of the "don't get married until you are at least 25" school. I tivo'd some episodes to watch

I was too before I met my husband. I ended up waiting until 3 weeks after college graduation to get married, but we could have gotten married much much earlier and been fine. I think sometimes you just know. But with a lot of people, they need to grow up and discover who they are first.

I would have been, but sometimes situations call for something different. I was 22 when I got married, but I had been dating my husband for 4 years and was already a year out of college. We knew we'd get married eventually anyway, and we lived in a high cost-of-living area where the housing prices were climbing exponentially every year. We couldn't live together until marriage (families would have gone nuts) and we knew if we waited too long, we wouldn't be able to afford a house. So there ya go. And we're still happy together, even if it has only been 3 years.

ASUADPi 03-05-2007 07:59 PM

I saw two episodes. The one with the Mormon couple (sorry don't remember their names just the religion) and Jen & Jake. I definately give the latter marriage two years tops. She was definately super possessive! As for the Mormon couple, I really felt bad for the grooms parents. All my religious background is from classes from college and we talked about all the religions so I only got a small amount. I don't truly "know" or "understand" their logic of not letting non-Mormon's in the temple (especially for a wedding).

KSUViolet06 03-06-2007 01:20 AM

Tonight's episode was interesting. Former pageant queen with 2 kids living in a tiny house and under 21. That's bleak.

DSTCHAOS 03-06-2007 01:26 AM

Her mother told her it's not going to work. I think I agree.

She's 18 and a stay at home mother (now wife). It's good that she's going to get back into pageants. Her kids are adorable.

I got a warm fuzzy feeling when he said "I'm not marrying her b/c we have two kids and just bought a house. I did those things for the same reason I'm marrying her...because I love her."

Those are the only two that I've seen too.

Jen and Jake... Well, I don't think Jake was feeling it AT ALL, it just seemed like he was going along with it just because it would make him happy.

I don't remember the Mormon couple's name either. I was so mad when she was like "I don't want your sisters to read the poem". It was like she didn't want to incorporate ANY of his family into the wedding AT ALL. It was sad enough that the groom's family couldn't do ANYTHING in the Mormon church.

I have a really close friend who is Mormon and I know that she is already thinking that she will have a reception for all her non-Mormon friends and actually get married in the temple.

Darn it -- I didn't watch last night!

LOL word. i was like, does anyone else see through this? the former paegant queen (of kentucky no less) gets knocked up (twice!) by some no-good dude and then they buy a house and convienently get married when she's 18?

the mother's demeanor (and literally) said "i did not have these expectations for my daughter... all booed up with kids at 18... she was a beauty queen dammit! she was gonna make something of herself!"

and you notice how the daughter was all like "look at all my pretty crowns, arent they great?" honey, its over.

Cosign. There are pageants out there for married moms, but they can't be as glamorous as Miss America or anything like that. I compete in pageants, and all the rules say that you cannot have been married, divorced, or pregnant before. So as soon as that girl said "I do," she was hanging up the sash and putting away the crown right at that moment.

Maaaaajor cosign... regardless of the fact that I don't understand ANY of the logic that these couples are following, the whole poem thing was just ridiculous.

After seeing the repeat of that one this afternoon...that's not just a tiny house, that's a double-wide.

For the record-christian teenagers are the most sexually frustrated people on the planet. Everyone I knew from church thought about getting married young like it was no big deal.
I'm glad I have gotten away from the church and I won't go back. I haven't seen this show yet but I'm not sure I want to.

Speaking of making fun of people like this-there are a couple of groups on facebook that I peruse and make fun of with tunatartare. These girls are ridiculous. One is 'engaged and in college' or something like that and the other is 'I just got engaged!!' or something along those lines.

Or "I'm going to have amazing sex when I get married!" For reals.

facebook is a fountain of mockery. I got into it with some douchebag who couldn't understand why women's colleges still existed.

KSUViolet06 03-18-2007 08:33 PM

This week's episode is going to be a "follow-up" on the couples. Can't wait! This show is like a car accident on the freeway, you just can't look away, no matter how awful it is!

Jill1228 03-19-2007 02:28 AM

I am recording this one! I can't wait! Should we take bets on who split up? :D

OMG! I watch it whenever I can. I think some will make it, it just depends on the couples. It's a good show though.

mu_agd 03-19-2007 09:08 AM

I happened upon the episode with the Mormon couple this weekend. I really wanted to punch that girl in the face.

hey! :(

i saw this one, too, and i was like, "dammit. i know there are trashy people in other states...why they gotta be in KY??" and then they showed the "florence y'all" water tower and i was like, "noooooooooooooooooo!" it used to basically be a big ad for the florence mall, but then the city fought it so they simply changed "mall" to "y'all" and everyone is like "..."

lordy.

AlphaFrog 03-19-2007 01:37 PM

I can't remember which episode it was, but I remember one where the mother asked her daughter if she was getting married just to have sex. The daughter admitted that sex was a big part of it. I think if I was that mother, I would have bought her a gigantic box of condoms and told her to have at it, but cancel the wedding.

RoyalEmpress33 03-19-2007 03:17 PM

Better them than me. That's all I can say.

After my mother and I had a conversation about how marriage is really supposed to be, I changed my mind.

KSUViolet06 03-19-2007 08:10 PM

Anybody catch last week's episode? I personally think gtting married just because you're pregnant is a bad idea.

I caught the "afternoon sneak" of the new episode (MTV shows the new episodes of The Hills & this show at 4:30). I'm surprised that some of the couples have changed since the show. I was disappointed that they only covered a few of the couples though.

There was the one couple (Lauren & David) where the mom was super overprotective of her son. Since the show, the two have gone on tour with "To Write Love on Her Arms" (a non profit group that tries to help people coping with depression). I think that's cool, even though they live in an RV with 5 other people. Then there was Jen & Jake (the army guy). Surprisingly, she says they don't fight at all since they moved back to Hawaii. Good for them. Chantel & Jacob (Christian couple-the girl admitted that sex was a big reason for getting married) now live in a trailer. That's awesome. Just kidding.

I personally couldn't get married at the age that some of these people are. When I get married, I want to be able to have a nice wedding, go on a nice honeymoon, and buy a home soon after. Those things are hard to do when you're fresh out of HS. Heck, they're hard to do sometimes when the couple are both college grads.

Why didn't they give updates on the KY-trashy couple or the guy (my personal favorite) who was really close with his brothers and played the guitar for his wife? Those were really the only two I wanted to hear updates on!

KSUViolet06 06-13-2007 08:59 PM

New episodes of this trainwreck start next week!

AznSAE 06-14-2007 10:41 AM

on the utah episode where the guy's family could not attend the ceremony at the temple, what was the name of the song that they played during the ring ceremony? it went something like: "this is our moment, let it shine, let it shine......" my friend is looking for a mother/son dance song for his wedding.

KSUViolet06 08-05-2007 02:49 PM

How about that last couple (I think they were Kyle & Krystal)?

The bride was bisexual and was talking to her mom about how she has had sex with all of her bridesmaids and one of Kyle's groomsmen. Ew. Since Kyle was uneasy about her bisexuality, they agreed that she wouldn't sleep with girls anymore unless he was there to watch.

There was another interesting couple this season, Erica & Josh. Erica was a pretty Latina model and Josh was an emo-type guy. He doesn't drink and Erica does. It seems like he really gets upset when she drinks. I personally think they'll be divorced in a year or so.
