The LURKERS among us!

There's always been more lurkers than actives here on GC, but lately there's waaaaaay more lurkers. There's been 600 people online since yesterday, yet GC is more inactive than ever. We beat our record on the 23rd, with 473 people online at once.

Who are these people?

Probably people reading up on the debacle at DePauw.

It usually gets crazy busy during recruitment, but I'm thinking that because of the national media attention it's been getting, a Google search definitely brings up all the discussion we've been having here.

kdonline 02-27-2007 12:33 PM

I also think it has to do w/ the DePauw debacle.

I was curious, so I Googled simply "depauw sorority" - the links that come up are interesting... but the first link to greekchat is at the bottom of the second page of results. (as of 8:30amPST today)

AGDClio 02-27-2007 04:39 PM

It's me!

Dionysus 02-27-2007 06:37 PM

I'm talking about within the last year. GC has been less active, yet have had more lurkers than ever. I don't think it's only actives who just started lurking, because I see many names I've never seen before.

Inter/National officers (including volunteer support staff) who like to keep tabs on their members so that they don't, dare I say it...go out of line?

Ya think?

Haha, yes. I'm also thinking of jealous boyfriends and girlfriends keeping tabs on their boo. And people who are too non-confrontational to participate on GC.

Yeah, I'm pretty guilty of that too. :o There's just no need to say the same thing over and over in a thread. If it doesn't contribute to the topic, why bother?

Tom Earp 02-28-2007 04:32 PM

Maybe it is because people hate to see what some have to post and degrade others or put in their signatures!

The Drama is well, just that!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no helping anymore and maybe some should realize that!;)

But do you read without logging in? I'm just perpetually logged into both my work and my home computer. If I open up GC I'm already logged in....

To clarify, I set the "Remember Me" option.

It's not degrading if it's the truth.

Actually I did not. Mainly because I couldn't figure out what he was trying to say. Thanks for the quick translation!

No problem. That's what I'm here for.

My sentiments exactly.

There is no ounce of untruth in mine whatsoever.

Really? Prove Your Sh*t!

You spout like a Fountain on a main Boulevard on and in any major city!:p

Gets tiresome from liars! Oh, are you one?;)

You may carry on little one.

What is a did Xidelt not say that? Because she did. Thus Centaur's sig is accurate. If you don't like what Xidelt said, take it up with her.

She also quoted YOUR comment. Conveniently linked to a post this time. It also is true.

And centaur, you're either the trevi fountain in rome OR a fire hydrant... either way, keep deflaming :D

I read without logging in. (In fact, I've been browsing the board for the past half hour, and only logged in just now 1) to respond to this and 2) to check my PMs)

I don't set the Remember Me option b/c its a shared computer. I'd rather log in myself each time I visit. If I don't have a reason to log in (ex - responding to a post), then I generally would show up as a lurker.

That makes sense. I don't click remember me on the school comps either.

:D

CutiePie2000 02-28-2007 06:31 PM

You can also use the "invisible" option so that it doesn't show up when you are online. It helps to keep the unsolicited PMs down.

I cannot believe you just spelt fountain and boulevard right. Did you look that up?

Here's an idea. I'll make a poll. We'll see how many people are creeped out by you posting in sorority threads. And yes, please, do take this up with Xidelt, she said it, not me.

Sometimes I read without logging in as well because GC likes to log me off now and then.

I find myself logging in because I have my options set to read 40 posts per page, as opposed to the default 10 posts that show up when I don't log in. I like reading my posts all at once.

What about her signature is a lie, Tom? The person she quoted really did say that. She said it around the time that you felt the need to put your misguided opinion into yet another of various threads on sorority issues. As a man and a non member of a sorority, I have never been sure why you felt compelled to add anything to those threads to begin with. This was something that was said to you time and again ad nauseum. You brought it on yourself. Stop playing the innocent.
As for the opinion it expresses, just because you don't like it, doesn't make it any less valid. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and they don't , no matter how much you think it should be true, have to run it by you first.

Sorry, I am still trying to figure all of this out and have seen no proof, just posting on Sig!

Maybe you in your wisdom can explain it to me or prove it?

Many Suppose but never prove.;)

Please forgive the old man for being too old to remember anything he says...amen...

ADD: If you read Who's Online, you would see tons of "Yahoo! Slurp Spiders" lurking around. That actually contributes more than half of the view population. O_O

There is your proof.

I lurk therfore I am.

Seriously, this site has become my guilty pleasure at work (don't tell HR- oh wait, I AM HR).

Anyway, most of you guys are much funnier than I could ever dream to be, and sometimes it just fun to sit back and enjoy the show.

schnocks 03-02-2007 07:42 PM

I was a lurker extraordinaire.

I found GC back in December, when I was thinking about going Greek at my school (formal recruitment was in January). I used for research purposes ... but since everything worked out, I never left.

And I finally joined GC, over two months after all was said and done. :)

BamaDad DZ 03-04-2007 06:49 PM

I lurk quite often.

Why?

My daughter Kristen is a DZ at the University of Alabama. I like to see where my $$$$$ and support go. I've learner quite a bit of information form GreekChat and, every now and then, I like to add my own commentary.

Many of you remind me of Kristen, so its great to see you expressing your viewpoints in a public forum.

I wish you all the best of luck, especially my personal favorite Delta Zeta ladies during these turbulent times (DePauw situation).

Some of us are "Lurkers" because we are intersted in becoming a member of a greek organization. I don't post because I feel I have nothing constructive to say, nor do I have a question to ask. I'm in high school and I've heard so many stereotypes that I just want to get a real feel for the different soroities that I'm interested in. I don't want a watered down, recruitment oriented statement, I want real opinions from real members and observers.

If you want a "real feel" -- you won't get that from GC. You'll get that (hopefully) eventually when you actually get on that campus and meet the members yourself.

You're still in high school. I wouldn't really be interested in specific sororities at the moment if I were you. Things can definitely change from now until you actually go through recruitment.

Just my $0.02.
