Miss America 2007

I know there's an older Miss America thread, but I thought this year's deserved its own. It airs on CMT on January 29, from Las Vegas.

Any greeks among the bunch?

I know Miss Nevada is a Gamma Phi Beta (ETA: from Chapman Univ. in Calif.)!

Did you watch Pageant School tonight? The MAO must really be desperate for viewership if they had to start and film Pageant School.

Miss Arkansas is listed as a member of Order of Omega, but it doesn't list her sorority affiliation. They don't list affiliation anymore on the MAO website, do they?

ETA: The ADPi website kindly lists the contestants with NPC affiliations:

ADPi: Miss Alabama
XO: Miss Arkansas, Miss Mississippi
SK: Miss District of Columbia
Tri Delta: Miss Florida
Pi Phi: Miss Missouri
GPhiB: Miss Nevada

I think it's so sad that they have to show the Miss America Pageant on a MONDAY night. Hello, everyone's going to be watching HEROES -- DUH! :o

PeppyGPhiB 01-27-2007 03:13 AM

I did watch Pageant School tonight :) I'm home sick. Of course Miss America is desperate...they were dropped by the major broadcasting networks. I think the reality show thing is their way of making themselves more modern without making changes to the pageant itself, which is good I think. I noticed when Miss USA got more cheesy, and I haven't liked it much since then.

In light of all the problems with the Miss USA pageant, and because I'm SO SICK of Donald Trump, I've decided that the Miss America pageant needs to be brought back to the prestigious level it was for so long, and the Miss USA pageant needs to just fade into the background. Therefore, I will make the effort to find out when it's on and watch it. I actually always liked MA better, just never knew when it was on. I always liked watching the talent competition, interview and evening gown. I hope they keep their pageant classy...Miss USA is just a skin show.

Second night of preliminary results are in! Miss Hawaii won Talent and Miss Nebraska won in Swimsuit! Go Pili! Hopefully she stuck her other competitions and rated high enough with the judges to secure a Finalist spot. It'd be great to get a 3rd Miss America from Hawaii!

Thursday night winners included Miss Texas (in Talent, and she's the first African-American Miss Texas contestant in MAO history) and Miss Oklahoma (Swimsuit).

miss alabama is the former miss samford university, and she co-hosted this years miss samford pageant. i was so impressed with her poise and maturity. she just graduated last spring. she is a great representative for a d pi.

Drolefille 01-27-2007 12:45 PM

OTW, isn't Miss Hawaii ALWAYS in the top *whatever* that starts the show? I feel like there's a small subset of states always chosen.

I always feel that Miss California is consistently in the top 10 so yeah. There probably are some states that get more recognition from their girls. Good for them though! If states like Hawaii & CA put up some great girls that get recognized a lot, I say it's a good thing.

ETA: I just saw the pics of them on the website. WOW! Miss Hawaii looked amazing in that costume & that dance was probably HOT!

I want to say HI, CA, and IL always stick in my mind, I want to say TX, but I'm not sure if I'm channeling Miss Congeniality or not...

KatieKate1244 01-27-2007 01:09 PM

I went to the Miss America website, and honestly, not too many of the contestents stodd out to me. Too many looked like TV broadcasters, or trophy wives. Which a few will probably end up becoming. There's also a noticable abscence of upper lips (look at Ohio).

Those that stood out: Michigan, Montana, Nebraska (I love her hair!), Texas, Hawaii, and DC.

Hawaii won in Miss America 1992 and 2001 -- and in recent years, Hawaii's placed in the semis and finals in 1997, 2000, and 2003. We came so close in 2003 with Kanoe coming in 1st RU to Ericka Dunlap.

We may be no Texas or [insert whatever powerhouse pageant state here], but Ray and the guys at the Miss Hawaii Program are obviously doing something right!

LPIDelta 01-27-2007 08:12 PM

Since I usually do well at picking the MA top ten, one of my friends told me to enter the contest they had online this year to win a $1 million. My top ten picks, based on reading the info on the website, are:

Miss Arkansas *who won Pageant School*
Miss Texas
Miss Connecticut *good backstory
Miss Nebraska
Miss DC
Miss Florida
Miss North Carolina
Miss Maryland *another good backstory
Miss Pennsylvania
Miss Kansas

I do not think I am going to do that well this year based on prelims! I agree, Michigan was cute as button. California, seemed impressive but not a "natural" beauty *I hate saying that but this is about beauty* Did anyone who watched Pageant School think Miss Delaware was a little much?

It's like, do we really give a shit that you had to give up your lucrative engineer's salary to be Miss Delaware? And do we care that you're probably the oldest contestant there?

Um, no.

And regarding the top 10, everytime Hawaii's won a prelim, she's always been a finalist. Crossing my fingers that Pili does it again this year and brings the crown back to the Islands!

The CMT website -- for anyone else who wants to play.

Allison DeMarcus, Chi Omega and Miss Tennessee 1999, will be interviewing the contestants backstage!

Allison is married to Rascal Flatts member, Jay DeMarcus.

Miss Indiana is a grad student at IU and won the Miss Indiana University pageant, brought back after many years. :)

PhiMuLady150 01-27-2007 11:07 PM

I like Miss South Carolina but for some reason she doesn't seem to stand out. I like her but I really wish she would "pop" more.

DreamfulSpirit 01-28-2007 02:10 AM

Being from North Carolina and Arizona, I'm pulling for both. I'm also pulling for Miss Connecticut, she spoke and spent time at Omega Phi Alpha's national convention July 2006. Our sorority's purpose goes along with her platform which relates to community service!

Stef the Pef 01-28-2007 07:11 AM

I really, really like Miss DC. She's so pretty!

Haha, I just noticed that Miss Tennessee came from the "other" Baylor, though. Might pull for her just for that!

ASUADPi 01-28-2007 12:39 PM

I watched pageant school and I'm so excited that Alabama is a sister, she was adorable.

So of course I'm partial to Alabama.

I am also partial to Arizona. Miss Arizona has gone through a lot to make it there, so more power to her.

I really liked Arkansas, Connecticut, Texas and there was one more that I can't name now (but I can picture her).

But if they don't make it, I'll support any Greek that does. LOL.

Tippiechick 01-28-2007 09:50 PM

I pick these for the top 10:

Texas
Nebraska
Hawaii
Arkansas
Oklahoma
California
South Carolina
DC
Florida
Georgia

And personally from Pageant School, I am also rooting for Utah, South Dakota, New Jersey, and Nevada.

Unregistered- 01-28-2007 10:02 PM

I think Miss Georgia, Amanda Kozak, is just absolutely beautiful. I love how exotic she looks!

I read on another message board that one of her parents is from Guam (Chamorro)? Anybody know her actual ethnic mixture? I'm just curious.

BetteDavisEyes 01-29-2007 01:16 AM

Miss California & Miss Pennsylvania are winners in the 3rd stage of prelims.

I'm watching HEROES tomorrow night but will also be tuning in to watch Miss America while I can. Thank goodness for DVR!

KDAngel 01-29-2007 06:44 AM

I loved watching Pagaent School. In fact it's the only reason I'm going to watch the show this year. I definitely think they should do that more often, it just sucks you in. :p

PeppyGPhiB 01-29-2007 03:58 PM

Anyone else find it not-so-coincidental that NBC started talking about Miss USA Tara Connor this morning and broadcasting parts of a special they're airing this week on her recovery?

If I were the Miss America Organization, I'd be so pissed. Not only does their "competition" ramp up a marketing blitz the day of the pageant, but countless people still don't realize Miss America is NOT Miss USA.

I'll be rooting for Miss Washington tonight (good luck!), and the host state Nevada (a Gamma Phi!)!

purplewindex 01-29-2007 08:34 PM

Miss Michigan is an alumnae of the Sigma Kappa chapter at Michigan State University. :)

kk_bama 01-29-2007 09:14 PM

I'm rooting for Miss Alabama (where I live and went to school), Miss Georgia (where I was born and where my parents live) and of course, Miss Nevada!!

I was just up at Broodwood Village Mall today, right across from Samford University, Miss Alabama's alma mater. I think she looks a lot like a younger, prettier Geena Davis.

FSUZeta 01-29-2007 09:14 PM

have you all started voting for miss congeniality? i cast my vote!

Unregistered- 01-29-2007 09:44 PM

Just as I did when Angie competed in 2000, I've been reading message board after message board for the results:

SPOILER: Top 10 Semi-Finalists (Highlight to read)

In order of announcement
GEORGIA
PENNSYLVANIA
MISSISSIPPI
OKLAHOMA
TEXAS
ALABAMA
UTAH
HAWAII
WASHINGTON
CALIFORNIA

I'm  that Miss Arkansas didn't place! At least she got her Pageant School necklace to take home with her!

Pili's got some stiff competition!

ADPi Conniebama 01-29-2007 09:44 PM

I am always rooting for Miss Alabama - when I found out she is an ADPi I was even more excited.

You know though, I really thought Miss Tennessee was beautiful but I don't think she made the top ten - goes to show this isn't JUST a beauty pagent.

Good luck to all of my panhellenic sisters - gotta have a glo girl as miss america.

o commercials over

kk_bama 01-29-2007 09:45 PM

Tippie, you were 5/10, pretty good!

Texas, Hawaii, Oklahoma, California, Georgia all made the top 10!

The rest are Pennsylvania, Alabama, Washington, Mississippi and Utah!

Not necessarily.

A great Miss America is a great Miss America with or without letters.

BlessedOne04 01-29-2007 09:54 PM

I am going for Texas, California, and Hawaii. The top ten did not include Arkansas and that shocked me.

BetteDavisEyes 01-29-2007 09:55 PM

I gotta root for Miss California, Miss Hawaii, & Miss Texas.

kk_bama 01-29-2007 10:01 PM

Congrats Miss ALABAMA For Miss Congeniality!

She's a Valdosta State U. grad! Yayyy!

BetteDavisEyes 01-29-2007 10:34 PM

I thought Miss Georgia was really cute during her tap dance routine.

FSUZeta 01-29-2007 10:35 PM

the 5 finalists are all some of the lovliest of the contestants. gotta pull for miss alabama.

lovethedove 01-29-2007 10:37 PM

yay

Yay for two Sigma Kappa sisters being in the Miss America pagent! Can't imagine what that would be like...competing against eachother

tld221 01-29-2007 10:41 PM

wow i did NOT expect miss Texas to make top 3. but yay for her!

FSUZeta 01-29-2007 10:41 PM

okay, so i am now rooting for georgia or texas.

tld221 01-29-2007 10:43 PM

georgia's answer was weak!
