If I can ask a related question...

My local service sorority used to be a little sister organization of a national frat. When the little sisters were disbanded on the national level, our girls decided to form a new group. We always celebrate our founder's day based on when the little sisters were disbanded. We're nearing our ten year anniversary, and we're not sure if we should celebrate 10 years from when the little sisters were disbanded, or 10 years from when we received our charter from the university recognizing us as an official org.

So what do other organizations consider their founding date?

Hey Pbear...do you go to Truman (and in TLS?)
I know that for us, Sigma Chi Delta, we have two dates...the one that we call Founders Day which is when we declared our letters (April 14, 1991). The other is when the CAOC gave us our charter, which was on May 12, 1991. We don't celebrate this, but we try to have our formal as close to the date as Founders Day as possible. I hope this helps!

You know what, this has officially gotten on my nerves. I'm a Gamma Phi Beta from UW-Platteville and I did summer session at Whitewater this summer. You aren't the oldest sorority in Wisconsin - we are. We were founded in November of 1867, the year after our college was founded, and have been going strong ever since, we just went national along the way. :)

sugar and spice 03-17-2003 04:06 PM

Not to mention there have been sororities at UW-Madison since 1875.

And it's not even Wisconsin's oldest local sorority, as Beloit College's Theta Pi Gamma was founded in 1896. Of course, they weren't recognized by the university until 1908, but they were still founded earlier.

I have a feeling that this may be one of those "firsts" with lots of modifiers, like, "We're the first local sorority in Wisconsin that has stayed local throughout its entire existence."

Still, 105 years is an awfully long time for any sorority, and should be congratulated.

prdlocal -- your sorority and my chapter were founded in the same year. :) 1898 represent.

Remember, you are never a former member of your sorority unless you disaffiliated completely. Local or national, you are still a sister of AGG!

:)
Very true! Those girls will forever be my friends and *sisters* :)

founding date

[COLOR=royalblue] hey- well nu sigma chi was founded in november of 1928- and our house was built the next year- we just celebrated our seventy-fifth aniversary! We started to die out- but two pledge classes combined provided 16 n.m's and we're hopefully on our way to big numbers again:)

alpha lambda chi

This local girl founded the local sorority known as Alpha Lambda Chi at the University of Texas at Dallas on February 8th 2003. So we're just babies. But we already have a constitution, bylaws, creed, coat of arms, our first rush, (so there's an alpha and beta class), and excellent ties with Panhellenic. We want to go national very soon. So here's to Alpha Lambda Chi THE TRUE REPRESENTATION OF A WOMAN!

tunatartare 09-23-2003 11:58 PM

Congrats and best wishes to you!!!

Phi Nu was founded on December 8, 1853. We are in planning for our 150th anniversary!!!

AXWhoah 10-17-2003 01:23 PM

Damn, 150years! Why did you never go natioanl or join one?

PhiNuBlue 10-17-2003 03:31 PM

I don't know why we didn't go national. We are doing just fine being local. It's been mentioned. There's just so much history tied into our school though. I'm not sure more chapters would be quite the same.

Sister Havana 10-29-2003 02:10 AM

I am a founding member of Lambda Omega Pi, a coed fraternity. We were founded April 20, 2001. We're small but tight-knit. :)
