Oscars 2007

And, the nominees are...

http://www.oscar.com/nominees/

I'll have my 2 cents' worth posted on Facebook. :p :D

LOL! Hunny, I don't play when it comes to the Oscars!!! :p :D

delph998 01-23-2007 12:15 PM

I Can't Wait!

I will definitely watch the Oscars this year. It's been boring for the past couple of years, but Jennifer, Eddie, Will Smith, Dreamgirls and Cars are all over it this year. I can't wait to watch.

jitterbug13 01-23-2007 12:47 PM

Tried to get up this morning to see it but didn't. Have a few comments.

Yay for Jennifer, Eddie and Forrest for their nominations. but :D that Will got nonimated as well. Yays also go to Leo and Mark Walburg for getting nominated too.

Boo for not nominating Prince for best song!

:( that Dreamgirls didn't get nominated for best picture but I also feel that it wouldn't have won anyway. I think Dreamgirls would have been nominated if Little Miss Sunshine wasn't.

squirrely girl 01-23-2007 01:02 PM

kinda happy that mark wahlberg is being recognized for his role in the departed.

and YAY for the cinematography category - choices!

does the devil wears prada really count as costume design? didn't they just borrow a bunch of stuff?

and happy to see apocalypto left off the lists for the most part

pinkies up 01-23-2007 10:54 PM

Go Jennifer!!! I bet Be"yawn"ce is somewhere hiding from her maniac daddy.

BlessedOne04 01-23-2007 10:57 PM

I will have to see Departed after hearing all the good things people have been saying about it. Beyonce is not even listed for the Listen nomination which is shocking since she was nominated for the Golden Globe. It seems like Hollywood is trying to shut Beyonce out by saying maybe you can win grammy's but it takes more to win an Oscar.

Of course I will have to watch to see if J. Hud gets the Oscar.

jitterbug13 01-23-2007 11:17 PM

^^^
Only three songwriters are recogized and nominated for Best Song. Since Beyonce was listed as the fourth writer, she didn't get nominated. Matthew is probably threating the Oscar people. :p

I am still  Prince didn't get nominated. So what if he won for Purple Rain? That was over 20 years ago! Can't a man win twice for songwriting?

AKA2D '91 01-23-2007 11:20 PM

I hadn't seen Siedah Garrett's name in some time. She's always done well with writing. I STILL lover her Jam w/ Dennis Edwards, "Don't Look Any Further." I LOVE "Love You I Do". I guess of the 3 tracks from DG, I'm pulling for that song.

ETA: Theory: Since Prince was nominated for a GG and won; to save face with Beyonce, maybe it was decided not to nominate him for the Oscar. That way, B would not be alone in the 'you forgot about me, I was nominated for a GG' category.

laylo 01-24-2007 01:57 AM

Beyonce shouldn't have been nominated for the Golden Globe either.

lovelyivy84 01-24-2007 01:35 PM

I was very happy to see Love You I Do nominated- that is a great song. It looks like it should be a great Oscar year- I am rooting for J Hud, Will Smith and Little Miss Sunshine personally

Obsession8 01-25-2007 01:40 AM

Actually...

I was wondering the same thing when I was putting together my predictions. Those were costumes indeed, designed by Patricia Field (of Sex and The City fame). :)

I loved her song "Everchanging Times" from the Baby Boom Soundtrack. I play it on Rhapsody all the time. It's glad to see she's getting recognition for her writing.

Yes!!!!!!!! That was from Baby Boom.

Co-sign! I also remember her duet with Michael Jackson -- "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" -- from back in the day, too. :D

That's her. When MJ went on tour, it was Sheryl Crow who sang the duet while on tour. Yes, she was MJs backup singer.

ETA: Siedah also wrote/co-wrote Man In the Mirror. She's a very accomplished writer. Her name won't get dropped in consideration for a MAJOR award! :p

Abigail Breslin was soooo funny in Little Miss Sunshine. The last like, fifteen minutes of that movie, me and the boyfriend were ROLLIN!

I'm actually pulling for Clint Eastwood. While, I loved The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima was fantastic.

AKA2D '91 02-06-2007 11:27 AM

Didn't Clint win last year for the boxing movie? Although, it may not be the same category; he ALWAYS gets an Oscar. :D

jitterbug13 02-06-2007 11:32 AM

^^^^
He won in '05 for Million Dollar Baby. He's also won for Unforgiven.

I know. But, I'm focusing on the movie. That film was fantastic and totally in a different category. Also, considering his directorial style makes his final product more amazing.

Okay, I'll chime in with my take on this (you know I couldn't resist :p ).

First, a little resume' recap, if you will:

http://www.oscar.com/nominees/?pn=de...rectingNominee
http://www.oscar.com/nominees/?pn=de...rectingNominee

Secondly, it seems as though Clint sees the "writing on the wall".

http://www.hollywood.com/news/Eastwo...s_Year/3656599

I respect him for what he said, but I take some exception to the sympathy aspect (it's a bit condescending, imho). Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Letters from Iwo Jima yet since many Oscar-worthy films don't come 'round my way (I *HATE* it!). However, when I *do* get around to seeing it, I know I'll love it (for reasons Soror abaici mentioned, as well as reasons I listed in my post-nods recap on Facebook :p ). Will I like/love it more than The Departed? Maybe, maybe not (but, I don't like comparing such vastly different films as it is anyway).

Regardless, that has no bearing on why I feel Scorsese should and will win on Sunday (and, I'm not saying that {solely} out of bias, sympathy, etc.). As much as I HATE it when the Academy hands out these so-called "body of work/career" Oscars (which is *partially* the case here), I feel it's very deserving in this instance. I'd rather see him win this way than to never win at all. I see it as a combination of sympathy and worth. I don't think Marty's going to win "just because" the Academy finally wants to "give" him an Oscar. The Departed is BAD@$$ (hence, why many critics {including yours truly :p } chose it as the top film of 2006 {or at least in the top 5 or top 10})!!! :D

In a perfect world, politics (i.e. Oscar campaigning) and sentimentality would have no place in the Oscars, and all nominees, including the "Susan Luccis" like Scorsese, would win when they're "supposed" to (i.e. when he should've won for Raging Bull and/or Goodfellas). That's subjectivity and competition for ya (*shrugs shoulders*)! :o Some aren't so lucky. :(

http://movies.aol.com/oscars-academy...e-kate-winslet
http://www.fandango.com/Commentator....ource=ca_title

Scorsese's peers have spoken; he's pretty much got it in the bag (remember: many DG members are also Academy members who vote on Best Director; the ballots were due yesterday, so it's as good as done). It's just time for someone else to have a piece of the Oscar pie (yes; I know that's never a legitimate reason to ever root for/against someone for anything, but enough already ).

Again, just my opinion. And, with all that said, it's nice to "meet" other people who share my love of the Oscars and who can appreciate "good" cinema over all of the cr@p we're bombarded with at the movies on a regular basis.

It's been real...off to bed I go...

4 MORE DAYS!!! :D
