OMG I wanted one of those SO bad when I was a kid. Not a bear specifically, just a puffalump. I have no idea why, I just did. Well, they're better looking than cabbage patch kids so...

They're the softest things ever and they started making them again before Christmas, but now I can't find them anymore. I guess there's still eBay? :(

teddybear85 01-16-2007 04:07 AM

stef, i love your teddybear!
i'm sooo excited about the rush now...

FSUZeta 01-16-2007 09:09 AM

I got a pink cow puffalump when I was 6. 22 years later, she's a little worse for the wear, but still with me.

I bought the blue puppy for my son this Christmas. He's too young to really play with it, but I wanted him to have one.

Good luck!!!

AXObuckeye 01-16-2007 04:55 PM

aww!! i have a pink kitty named "puffy" who (yes, "who") i have slept with since i was a baby!! she's up in my bed right now :D i can't believe they are making 'em again!

good luck with recruitment!! keep us updated :)

Stef the Pef 01-17-2007 01:15 AM

Oh yes...I still sleep with most of my puffalumps...problem is, they take up half my bed. There's a cow, a bear, and a puppy from the new collection and two purple bunnies and a chicken that are the smaller older ones.

I've had one of my purple bunnies since my first Easter and slept with it ever since!

Good luck to teddybear!

teddybear85 01-17-2007 01:56 AM

thank u all!!
tmr will be the first day of the informal rush. I'm so excited and nervous.
i went to the info session last week and the rho chi said the dressing code would be just casual because most of the sorority girls will be wearing t-shirt and jeans.
so tmr I will be wearing t-shirt and jeans only.
I hope that will work.

teddybear85 01-18-2007 03:18 AM

Hi everybody,

I just went through the first day of the rush. I had so much fun.
I took the advice to dress nicer today.. and I wore a black turtleneck, skinny jeans and brown boots. and I wore a pink nova check coat and many sororities said it was cute and I was so happy.

So the following are my feelings about the chapter houses that i had visited.

PINK- I love it. The girl I met in the house was from the same city as I did, so we talked about the city a lot. However, the girl told me that people told her she was only supposed to "greet" only but suddenly people asked her to rush me. So it was her first time to rush people. I asked her lots of questions and I hope she would like me.

PURPLE- I love the house, but the only thing is that I didn't think the girl liked me. At the end of the party the president of this house came to me but we didn't really have a lot of time to chat so I didn't have a chance to impress her.

WHITE- I love the girl I talked to!!! She was so nice and told me so much about the sorority activities. I told her that it's my second time to rush because I didn't get a bid in the fall. She encouraged me and said I should try it again now too. I love her!

BLACK- OKAY, so I talked to about 4 girls and I have no clue whether I impressed them or not. One of the girl that I think she has a really pretty smile seemed very nice, yet I didn't think she liked me. I didn't know why.. it's just my feeling. I love the house though. It's so big.

BROWN- so I actually want to get into this house last fall. However I didn't receive any bid from them. I still love the girls.. I talked to 3 of them and I liked them all. One of the girls I talked to was from the same class with me and I'm gonna see her tomorrow morning!

Well. That's pretty much about it. I do have some preference on PINK, WHITE and BROWN. these are my top choices.
One thing is that. I thought I didn't mention, I rushed in the fall and I didn't receive I bid... I was honest about my situation to many sorority girls, but do u guys think it's a good thing to say? Or the girls would think I'm not good enough to receive a bid in fall and so they didn't want me to be there?
THANKS!

Stef the Pef 01-18-2007 04:34 AM

I wouldn't really mention that I'd been through rush once before--after all, if you're meeting a new set of girls, you should spend time getting to know the rusher and letting them get to know you. Chances are, they probably already know you've been through once before if you filled out an info sheet on yourself to register for rush.

I'm so glad you had a good day! Keep us posted on what happens throughout the week. Good luck! :)

teddybear85 01-18-2007 04:37 AM

stef,
i didn't mention until they asked me "did you rush in fall?"
i didn't wanna lie because it would give them a bad impression if they regconized me and knew i lied.
i hope it didn't hurt me from getting bid.
so far i only received call from 1 house. do you guys think it's possible to receive calls tomorrow too? or that's it?
i'm so nervous and couldn't sleep now:'(

Nah, that's fine. You did good. Never lie about anything.

I don't know how the "call" system works since our Panhellenic rush is very structured, but hey, that's still one house! Unless you absolutely cannot see yourself there, stick with it.

teddybear85 01-18-2007 04:57 AM

thanks stef.
yea i'm gonna stick with that ... :)
here is the thing.. last quarter, i didn't receive a call that i'm not going to any party until like 1 hour before those parties started (and i was already dressed up)
so.. i hope i can still get calls tomorrow:)
i'll keep updating no matter what

It sounds like you're doing great, and your outfit sounded really cute. Try not to worry about "impressing" any members of the sorority or worry that you didn't get enough time to "impress" the president or whatever. If you're relaxed and yourself you're doing all you can. If you're too focused on impressing the sororities you can look insincere even if you don't mean to be...just don't "try too hard." (I'm sure you're not being insincere or fake but I know it's easy for a nervous PNM to seem like it...just giving you a heads up!)

I can't wait to hear updates, good luck!

teddybear85 01-19-2007 02:35 AM

Hi everybody.
I was so unhappy today at the beginning because I only received calls from one houses. However, I love the house that invited me back because the girls there are so nice.
I saw the girl that I met in the fall rush and she said she was glad that I came back. The girls are so nice and I really wanna join their sorority!
and tonight they called me back and invited me to go to the pref. nice tomorrow, which is in CHEESECAKE FACTORY. I'm SOOOOOOooo happy that they called because i thought i had no hope (since there's only one sorority asking me to come back)
the greek advisor said if they called me back to their pref nice it's because they really want me to be one of the members. I hope I will get a bid tomorrow!
Anyone can tell me what I should do on pref night?

THANKS!!!!!

Teddybear,

This is great news! Be yourself and be prepared to have more in-depth and "heart to heart" conversations. Now is the time to tell the sorority how much you feel at home with their sisterhood and how you've really enjoyed yourself so far. Keep being yourself and you'll do great. Your greek advisor was right... you were invited back to this group because the women of that sorority see the qualities in you that they look for in a member. Have fun and good luck!

Stef the Pef 01-19-2007 07:38 AM

YAY! Go teddybear!

It only takes one...and cheesecake factory is yummy yummy.

Just relax and let them know how much you enjoy hanging out with them, that's all. Enjoy pref day!

FSUZeta 01-19-2007 08:53 AM

agree with stef-i wouldn't dwell on the fact that fall rush didn't turn out how you had wished-if it does come up, admit that you did rush in the fall-but you don't have to say that you did not receive a bid-you could say something to the effect of "i did go thru in the fall, but decided that i would rather wait a semester and join in the spring."

the girl that is in one of your classes-depending on the campus rules, outside of recruitment parties, she might not be able to speak to you. if this is the rule, please realise that she would probably love to have a conversation with you, but doesn't want to risk getting you-or her sorority- in trouble.

good luck-it sounds like you had fun at all the houses and made some new friends.

teddybear85 01-19-2007 09:41 PM

i'm so happy because the girls there are so nice.
they said if i can't attend the pref night they are gonna invite me for brunch. :)

twotimestalia 01-19-2007 10:17 PM

Good Luck! Have fun, and be your sweet self! *hugs*

teddybear85 01-20-2007 02:39 AM

thanks everybody.
i had a great time tonight. i really love the girls there so much.
somehow they all thought i was sick and they were all soooo caring...

I'm confused whether or not this is formal or informal recruitment but since you mentioned sorority open houses, I'm assuming that this is informal. Yes, during informal recruitment women are generally "cut." This is NOT always the case -- if a sorority is, say, 15 women below total and only 10 women accept invitations to the preference night the sorority MAY choose to extend bids to all 10 women if they feel as though they would all be good fits for the sorority. However, if 20 women show up to this hypothetical pref party, then 5 women will not be extended bids.

Don't worry though... in my personal experience as a PNM and a sorority member, it seems as though not TOO many women get cut from informal pref parties... it wouldn't make sense for a sorority to invite 50 women to a pref party when only 15 spots are available.

Rest assured that whatever happens, you were invited back because they genuinely like you and see something special in you. I hope you receive happy news tomorrow!

teddybear85 01-20-2007 01:43 PM

thanks so much. I hope I will receive the call from them.
also, do they taught to remember the rushees?
because i remember i didn't really talk to some girls and when they saw me they already knew my name.

At most schools, sorority members have a list of which women are coming in which round so they are familiar with their names before they meet them.

Yup. Like KSUViolet said, sororities will have a list of the girls who accept invites. Especially for a pref party, sororities will want to try to get to know everyone on a first name basis because 1. it's polite and courteous, and 2. because they really want to get to know the PNMs better and make them feel at home.

I'm hoping for a happy ending to your story today. Please let us know!

DeltaGamma23 01-20-2007 03:35 PM

Goodluck Teddybear! Can't wait to hear the news :)

I really hope so, but unfortunately PNMs are not always contacted. We never told PNMs if they didn't receive a bid, they usually just figured it out when they saw all the new sorority members wearing their spring bid day shirts or heard that XYZ gave out bids one day. I'm not saying that this is the best way to do things, but there was a very practical reason for this. Sometimes sororities will do a "rolling" bid system especially if they're close to total. In this system, for example, a sorority might have LOVED say, 8 girls during their pref parties but they were only allowed to bid 3. Let's say one of the three girls declines her bid (or depledges right away) for whatever reason. A sorority may decide to extend a bid to another girl in the following hours/days/weeks. If a sorority called up everyone to say "Sorry, you didn't receive a bid" then it might hurt the chances of another girl accepting her bid later on as she feels that she's been "rejected."

While formal recruitment has a very real sense of "rejection" (unfortunately) the best way to think about informal recruitment is that some girls simply cannot be chosen due to space -- not rejected. I'm sure this doesn't make a lot of difference for a disappointed PNM, but it's the truth. I know that there are plenty of women out there who I'm sure would have been amazing members of my sorority but because we were at or nearly at total. When we could only accept 4 girls, there were always 12 we wanted to bid.

So that's the long, complicated answer to your question, and I hope for good news either today or tomorrow!

Stef the Pef 01-20-2007 03:56 PM

YAY! I'm glad to hear you're having a good time with this. I really hope that one group comes through, but if not, it sounds like you've met some great girls who want to follow up with you later (and they do--you'd be surprised how many of my rushers I've run into after rush week).

I'm crossing my fingers for you, girl...
