Wedding flowers, colors

I am wondering how ladies decide what flowers and colors to have. Do most people go with seasonal flowers and colors? Or, do people go with their favorite colors regardless of the season? My absolute favorite colors are bright pink, fuschia, and light- medium purple.

tunatartare 01-05-2007 10:54 AM

If you go with all three of those, it will look like Hello Kitty threw up at your wedding.

bichonl 01-05-2007 10:56 AM

LoL! I definitely don't want to use all three. Should have clarified! I'm just saying that those are my three faves. I'd like to have ONE of them for my wedding. I'm looking at a fall or winter wedding, but I'm not sure if ANY of those colors would be in season!

If you use those colors, then you should wear this to your wedding.

Yes folks, this is a real wedding dress.

Wow!

I think bright pink looks really pretty for wedding flowers. My friend that got married this summer had bright pink roses as her flowers and the bouquets the bridesmaids carried looked stunning with their black dresses. I don't know where you would find them in the winter though and personally I think bright colors like that look better in summertime weddings, but that's just my opinion. I don't know about fuschia and purple though, I'd say stick with the pink. Good luck choosing your flowers! :)

LPIDelta 01-05-2007 12:38 PM

bichon--the first rule about your day is that its your wedding, so do whatever you want! If you like purple and pinks then use purple and pinks. I actually think those color flowers with the right color dress in the fall would look lovely. Maybe a navy colored bridesmaids dress?

I guess I was lucky--my favorite flower is daisies and I had an August wedding. I had daisies, yellow roses, purple irises in my bouquet....all my favorite flowers. If you tell them what colors you like, the right florist will know how to make it work.

oh my god, I laughed out loud here at work and got a bunch of funny stares!

In answer to the OP question. I'm using favorite colors. yellow and royal blue. In October.

FSUZeta 01-05-2007 04:33 PM

sometimes brides choose the color they would like for their bridesmaids dresses to be, and then choose the flowers based on that color.

WhiteDaisy128 01-05-2007 04:40 PM

My wedding is June 16 of this year...I picked my colors from my dress at first. I thought I would end up with a white dress with a red sash of some sort...well I ended up not doing that...my dress is just white...but I still loved the idea of red and while. My bridesmaids are wearing red and white. I'll do red roses (my fiance's favorite) and white gerber daisies (my favorite). I think my bouquet will be just red roses...and the bridesmaids will carry just white gerber daisies. Simple and classic.

OleMissGlitter 01-05-2007 04:42 PM

whitedaisy that sounds pretty!

I used the same flowers for my wedding, but the bridesmaids bouquets were a mixture of the 2 flowers and I had white roses.

I'm having a scarlet and gray wedding (my fiancé is an alum and I'm a fan) and he is wearing a black suit with a red vest and gray tie. My bridesmaids will be wearing black and I will have a red sash around my waist. How did we pick scarlet and gray? It just honestly came to us when we were throwing around colors. My flowers will be gerbera daisies though. Those are the very first flowers he ever bought me. I don't care if it clashes; those flowers hold a special meaning for the two of us.

LOL, and I love the dress! ;)

You could get away with using more than one color, if you use them in different places. For example, you might use lavender for your stationery (invitations, response cards, table cards, thank-you cards) and have your bridesmaids wear fuschia.

When DH and I got married, we went with blue. I picked out light blue bridesmaid dresses, and we told each of our mothers, "Wear a blue dress, your discretion as long as it's blue." And I wore sapphire earrings (my "something blue"). DH and I both like blue, so it was a natural choice.

We're hoping that our Zeta daughter doesn't see the HK dress, as she's a Hello Kitty fanatic and I can just see her wearing that at her wedding!

I've known of some brides to go to the florist's first and look at the bouquet books and then plan colors that go with the one they liked best. I saw a bouquet in one of those books that was all done in blues, greens, and purples and thought that'd be gorgeous to plan gowns around.

One daughter has decided that when she marries, she'll have her bridesmaids wearing all different shades of pastels. We've also been to weddings where the bridesmaids wore gradually deepening shades of the same color. Like the first one down the aisle wore very dark pink, the next one was a little lighter, and so on until you got to the maid of honor, who was wearing very pale pink.

My friend was going to do something similar to that, and have varying shades of blue and green for her bridesmaids. It got too complicated though (she would've had to organize the colors based on our heights), so she's just sticking with one shade (seafoam, which I usually hate, but this dress looks so pretty that I don't mind wearing it!).

This is the dress:

I"m toally buying that Hellow Kitty wedding dress. It'll look AWESOME with my red hair. Totally. Maybe there is a matching dress for the bridesmaids and flower girl, too!!!! *pukes quietly.*

Our oldest AOII daughter carried red roses as well, and that's what the boys wore too. I wish I could post a picture of her bouquet--it was red roses and berries and greenery (this was a Christmas wedding)--but the computer won't let me. The bridesmaids had red roses, fragrant white lilies, red berries, and silver Christmas balls. The little girls had kissing balls covered with white hydrangea petals with silver balls at the bottom a a silver chain.

Hypericum berries, because they come in all colors, and kissing balls seem to be used a lot around here for bouquets these days.

LeslieAGD 01-06-2007 05:35 PM

When are you getting married and what color are you bridesmaid dresses?

I used peach and red roses with white orchids. Red is my favorite color (and it photographs beautifully), and I love orchids. The peach was a great accent color for summer.

PhoenixAzul 01-07-2007 12:59 AM

Also, keep in mind the timing of your wedding. Certain flowers are better and more available at certain times of the year. Of course if price is no object, do whatever the heck you want. But your florist can advise you on that.

LOL - but how can Hello Kitty throw up without a mouth? Out of her ears?

That sounds lovely, if you have enough bridesmaids.

Back to bichonl: one of the most stunning weddings I was ever at was a December wedding. The church was already decorated for Christmas, and the bridesmaids wore a deep forest green. They carried bouquets of stargazer lilies with white freesia (i think), and long pink ribbons. With the church's pink and white poinsettias and swags of greenery, it was beautiful!

FSUZeta 01-09-2007 06:21 PM

at a christmas wedding that i attended, the bridesmaids wore dark green velvet floor length dresses and carried a hurricane lantern which contained a lit candle. the lantern was mounted on a base which was hidden with greenery(i think small leafed ivy) and gold ribbon was woven into the greenery. it was stunning.

i carried a bouquet of white calla lilies which was arranged in an asymetrical, half moon style-very modern looking. it was lovely. my bridesmaids wore floor length gowns of lavender moire taffeta(at the time i thought they were lovely, but i shudder when i look at them now!) and carried nosegays of assorted pink, lavender, purple and white flowers. we were married in june-husbands choice-i would have preferred the fall.

ADqtPiMel 01-09-2007 11:31 PM

My colors are light green and bright pink, and I'm using pink, orange and yellow gerber daisies. My girls are just carrying 4 daisies tied with a ribbon, and my bouquet is similar but bigger.

valkyrie 01-10-2007 01:02 AM

My wedding colors will be whatever Elvis is wearing when we show up at the chapel in Vegas.

bichonl 01-10-2007 02:19 PM

Thanks everyone!

I would like a winter wedding- ideally January or early February. We are Catholic, so we might not be able to marry during Advent (December) or Lent (starts in Feb usually). Winter is slowly becoming my favorite season.

I'm thinking I'd like dark, non-vomit-inducing, pink bridemaid dresses.

Whatever happened to that woman who was "practically" engaged?

Generally only Sundays of Advent are prohibited, not a marriage during the Advent season - so you could probably still get married during Advent as long as you didn't want a Sunday. Getting married during Lent tends to come with a lot of restrictions if it's allowed, so I would definitely avoid that.

I saw a wedding here in NYC the Saturday after Thanksgiving when I went up to see the church I'm getting married at. Bridesmaids in a dark shade of pink & instead of flowers, they carried fur muffs on their hands. It was cute! I think if you look around you'll find the right shade of pink.

I was under the impression that Christian churches wouldn't perform marriages on Sundays?

Catholic churches can - it's not too common but it's allowed.

bump!-another wedding thread

honeychile 08-21-2010 06:05 PM

Back in the day, my parents wanted to get married during Lent, but couldn't - so they got married the Sunday before. This was in a Baptist church. My Baptist church doesn't do weddings on Sundays, but only because there's just too much going on, and the wedding could easily be ruined.

I never heard of the Advent prohibition, though.

IrishLake 08-21-2010 06:13 PM

I went to a Saturday wedding in Advent (Catholic) just last year. Not a prohibition. Lent is another story though. I had to wait to get both of my kids baptised until after Easter.
