Name for dog

We recently adopted a dog and I'm trying to decide on a name. We think he is a Pekingese, mostly white, with brown patches. He is adorable (I'm not usually a "dog person"). We found him on Christmas Day, so I was thinking of a name going along with that theme.

I can think of a few names, but nothing seems perfect.

see page 2 for pics!

AlphaFrog 01-05-2007 09:58 AM

What about Navidad or Noel since you found him on Christmas?

_Lisa_ 01-05-2007 09:58 AM

If he were a girl I'd call him Holly, I think Christmas/Holiday themed names would lend themselves to girl names. Although, that didn't stop a couple I know from naming their male hound Rosebud.

Good luck picking out a name, he is a cutie! :)

Not necessarily. You have Santa, Scrooge, Rudolph, Kringle, Bob Crachett, Tiny Tim...
Kringle or Tiny Tim might actually be cute.

ThetaLove 01-05-2007 10:05 AM

thanks for those ideas! yes, it is more difficult to find male names.

Star would have been nice for a female.

other ideas we have are:
frosty
elf
hermy (misfit elf from rudolph cartoon)
bumble (adomable snowman from rudolph)
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Donder, Blitzen, Cupid and Comet.

Maybe...I guess I just don't think of those as possible names for a dog since they're so blatantly obvious as to the Christmas/Holiday theme. I liked your original idea of Navidad!

_Lisa_ 01-05-2007 10:09 AM

I think frosty & bumble are really cute names! :)

Senusret I 01-05-2007 10:11 AM

Fifi? That ain't a name for this mutt.
So how about Champion?
Champion? You're anything but!

We could call him Tiger, but there's no bite in him!
Tiger? Kittens would frighten him!
Rover, why don't you think it over?!
Rover is the perfect name for this dumb lookin' dog!

Sandy, Sandy's his name if you please.
If you don't believe me, ask anyone of the fleas.
Residing on Sandy, truly a pedigreed Sandy,
there ain't no better breed!

And he, really comes in handy!
Especially when you're all alone
in the night and small
and terribly frightened

It's Sandy!
Sandy, he'll always be
There.

I like "people" names for dogs. Never cared for names like, "patches" "spot" "fluffy" etc.

If you want to carry on the Christmas theme, you could name him "Nic" (for St. Nicholas) or "Rudolph" or "Rudy" for short-- for the rednose raindeer.

For a small dog like that, I like, "Bobby" "Cleo" or "Jess." Or if you want something more formal, "Miles" "Zach" or "Wallace."

Here is a website with more than 2000 dog names:

tunatartare 01-05-2007 10:47 AM

How about Myrh? Or Mistle?

AlexMack 01-05-2007 12:02 PM

What about Timmy?

quick story: we rescued a kitten on christmas day. 4 months old, absolutely tiny, big ball of fluff. We thought she was a boy but it turns out she was a girl (obv. by the pronouns). We named her after Tiny Tim and that is how my baby girl (now 8 years old) got her name.
Here she is asleep on my desk:

Failing that, I think Jingle or Kringle would be adorable.

Emory Kappa 01-05-2007 12:36 PM

My aunt found a cat on Christmas, and my uncle suggested naming it Leon. (Noel spelled backwards.) It was a female cat, so she got the name Leona.

Not sure if Leon is a good name for a Pekingese, though!

P.S. We're celebrating the Tigers' win at our house too! Maybe you should name the dog Mike?

woo hoo! :D I don't like this time of year much, because I'm left with a little bit of emptiness. I know that feeling will pass in just a few days. After all, its JUST football. haha.

I thought about Mike, but a lot of people named their dogs Mike. I giggled a little when someone suggest St. Nick. It was a great suggestion for a Christmas dog. But I know a few people that named their dog Nick or St. Nick after Nick $aban. No way in heck I'm naming my dog after him!:D Miles was a cute idea.
hmmmm. Maybe "Mac" after Coach Charlie McClendon? my boyfriend and I are both HUGE LSU football fans. We also thought about Holliday after Trindon Holliday the LSU player.

Everyone, thanks again for the suggestions and the link to dog names.

My brother's pug is named Earl. Sounds like a bizarre name for a dog, but when you see him, it totally makes sense. He was originally called Ian (my brother got him from someone who had to give him up when he was less than a year old)- which I thought was bizarre and not approrpriate for him.

Try calling him by different names, see what sounds right. You'll be saying the name a lot!

Tom Earp 01-05-2007 05:26 PM

How about Mikita? Use something Oriental?

AXO Alum 01-05-2007 06:07 PM

We adopted a cat 2 years ago at Christmas - his name (which my then 2yo gave him totally on his own) is Jingles.

Centaur - OMG!! Your cat totally is a twin to my Twenty (named for Tony Stewarts #20 Home Depot Chevy - Woo Hoo!! NASCAR rednecks unite!!)

Leave it to us to have everything in common bwahahaha :D

Hahaha we rule! I love my baby (we still call her The Baby, even though she's like the second oldest cat in the house now out of 6). When we first got her, my brother got a putting green/mat thing for christmas and she was so small she could cram almost her entire body into the hole.
I'll be inconsolable when she dies.
Pics of yours plz!

I'm sure you've already done this, but if the dog didn't have a collar, did you take him by the vet to make sure he wasn't microchipped?

Lots of people who spend a lot of money on pure-bred dogs (even lots of people with mixed breeds) spend the $10 to get their dogs microchipped in the event that they get lost and lose their collar.

I only ask, because someone is probably missing their doggie right now :(

My dog's trainer once told me a story of one of her friends who adopted a stray dog and took it to a dog festival where a clinic there was doing free microchipping. Before they inserted the chip, they obviously scanned the dog to ensure it wasn't already chipped. Well, this dog turned out to already have a chip and they had the dog for over 2+ years. They ended up finding the original owners and giving the dog back.

It's a sad story :(

bucutie02 01-07-2007 07:25 PM

wow! how awesome is this! the weekend before halloween, we bought a pekingese! actually, we had one for 17.5 years, and then we had to put him to sleep because he was going blind and could barely walk...not to menton he was deaf for a few years already!

anyway, we bought another pekingese about 1 month later. He is also white! He has green eyes and is the cutest thing!

I named him Parker James! He is such a little prep because he has like a plaid collar and everything!

of course. I really feel like I did everything that I could possibly do. I put a found ad in the paper. I called the number on the dog's tag with no response (numerous times since Christmas Day). He has his last name on the tag and I called everyone in our phone book with that last name (luckily it wasn't all that common of a last name). No one knew of the owners. I felt bad calling these people on Christmas day, but I just knew someone was missing their dog and they might be having a large family gathering and someone would know who they were. I looked in the phonebook and their address is unlisted. I also called the vet clinics close to my house and no one had a record of him. We got in touch with animal control who checked the dog out and kept him for the required amount of time (7 days- plus the weekends and holidays- they also tried to contact the owners) and we officially adopted him. He wasn't microchipped before, but he is now! He also didn't have his rabies/immunizations tag. But he does now.
People have been known to drop animals off in our neighborhood hoping that someone will take them in. I don't know if that is what happened here, b/c it seems like they would have sold him.

As far as I'm concerned the previous "owners" do not deserve this dog. It is sad b/c he is an adorable, playful, young dog.
And by the way....We named him Blitzen.... "Blitz" for short. christmas and football theme.:D

piphibabyangel 01-11-2007 03:33 PM

both your puppy and the name are adorable!!!! :)

Tom Earp 01-11-2007 04:57 PM

Oh, I thought this was about dogs ? Not Pussy Cats.

How about Dog or Dammit?

Sit Down Dog, Sit Down Damnit. For males only! Of course!:D

When I was growing up, the kid around the corner had a dog that his dad named Sob. Also male, of course.

Thanks!!! But that isn't his picture. That is just a picture that I found online of a dog that looks as close to him as I could find. I'll post a picture when I get them loaded on my computer.

and Tom, I don't think that's going to work. :D haha

Scandia 01-11-2007 07:55 PM

I like Noel or Kris Kringle.

You suck. \m/ :p

My nieces got a puppy for Christmas and they named him Mele, after Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas in Hawaiian).

Mele also means "song".

JeffersonStKKG 01-21-2007 03:41 PM

I adopted my "baby" while I was in school. She is a MUTT if I've ever seen one (I'm a veterinary technician, too); part: lab/cocker spaniel/chow. Basically, she looks like a black, lab puppy ---and she's on my feet, underneath the computer desk as I'm typing..;) I named her Roxy. At the time, I loved Roxy clothing and "Roxy" as a girl's name sounds a little too "va-va-voom", in my opinion. Initially, she weighed 25lbs. and needed to grow into herself; I didn't notice that she was part lab until she put on weight (about 20lbs..haha). The name suits her b/c Roxy's body moves independently of itself; when she walks, she "shakes what her Mama gave her." She's really pretty but also loves the outdoors and beach, so I guessed right when naming her.

Is that a Peke? Looks more like a Japanese Chin to me: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...&ct=image&cd=3

ThetaLove 02-25-2007 03:50 PM

hmmm. that is what I was wondering as well. I was asking around, and a few people have mentioned that he might be something else.

possibly a pug/shih tzu?

Any other info would be appreciated!
Thanks for the link!

khfadpi 02-26-2007 12:30 AM

That's a Japanese Chin. No doubt.
He looks like a Max to me, but you have probably already named him.:)

Thanks, Emory Kappa, I bet you will enjoy these pics because of your dislike of Nick Saban. This is Blitzen with his toy elephant that we nicknamed "Saban" because of the Alabama mascot. He has already destroyed 2 of them. Yep, we're insane. :o
