ADqtPiMel's sister's recruitment

My little sister's recruitment experience starts this Wednesday. She attends Miami University in Ohio, which has 17 sororities. I've coded them with colors since I'm not creative enough to come up with 17 great code names. :)

red
orange
yellow
green
blue
purple
pink
lavender
tan
turquoise
gray
magenta
brown
black
gold
silver
white

Miami has a lot of pre-recruitment things in the fall, so she already has a few favorites (red, pink, turquoise, purple and brown), but she's been properly trained to keep an open mind. I'll try to keep this updated as best as I can.

Dougie 01-01-2007 01:49 PM

First, I’m glad to see your sister’s attending Miami, she’s got good taste. Second, I’ll defiantly be watching this thread since the stories I hear from my friends about sorority recruitment are absolutely hilarious (mostly in a good way of course).

KSUViolet06 01-01-2007 04:19 PM

I'm excited-an Ohio rush thread :)

MJo19 01-01-2007 05:03 PM

I agree; yay for an Ohio rush thread. Good luck to your sister!

As a former Oxford resident (and Recruitment Advisor to the Alpha Phi chapter) YIPPEEE! I love Miami recruitment threads!

The Leadership Consultant I am working with at Oklahoma arrives in Oxford tomorrow! I told her to make sure to get a toasted roll and hit Bagel & Deli :)

twinkle555 01-01-2007 11:48 PM

seventeen is quite a handful!! good luck to your sister!

Aphigal 01-03-2007 10:45 AM

Yeah! Miami recruitment starts today!! I hope you/your sister posts an update.

PhoenixAzul 01-03-2007 10:49 AM

Hooray for Ohio recruitments!!! Historically, ours has started today too with opening ceremony...but our new GL Adviser decided to press it back a week and start next week. We've had to scramble a bit, but it was decided b/c it allowed more time for girls to sign up.

Miami is a great school and has super strong Greek traditions (how many were founded there?!). I hope she finds a fabulous sisterhood to join. I see Miami has an ADPi chapter...hoping for a legacy?

She is a legacy to two chapters on campus. I haven't talked to her yet - I think parties go on until like 8:30 or so. I'll post when I get an update.

ADqtPiMel 01-03-2007 11:46 PM

Okay, here's the scoop. She went to 7 chapters today.

Red - she really enjoyed them
Orange - didn't feel like it was the right one for her
Yellow - she also liked this one
Gray - she thought the president and recruitment team were really articulate, but she didn't connect with the girls she talked with
Purple - she really liked this chapter - it's one of her legacy chapters
Gold - she liked them today, but had a bad impression of a few members from pre-recruitment stuff
Silver - she really didn't connect with the girls here

So far, she's ranking them:
Purple
Red
Yellow
Gold
Gray
Silver
Orange

She has 11 parties tomorrow - one of them is a new Jewish local that I don't know anything about.

honeychile 01-04-2007 12:13 AM

I scared to say anything - except that I'm sure your sister is getting wise advice, and hope that she gets a bid from the chapter she wants!

GeekyPenguin 01-04-2007 12:38 AM

Yay, I can't wait to hear more! :)

AggieADPi10 01-04-2007 03:11 AM

My best friend from high school is rushing at Miami too! Today went well for her.

FSUZeta 01-04-2007 12:08 PM

best wishes to adqtpimel's sister and the best friend of aggieadpi10.

ADqtPiMel 01-05-2007 12:12 AM

So, she visited the rest today - there's still another day of open house tomorrow, but her schedule was crammed into two days.

Pink - her other legacy chapter, she really liked this one
Lavender - not one of her favorites
Tan - didn't stand out much to her
Green - she didn't expect to like this one at all and was pleasantly surprised
Turquoise - she didn't like this one as much as she expected, but she got picked up at the door by a girl she knows, so that was nice
Blue - she had a bad experience with them pre-recruitment but liked them a lot today
Magenta - not one of her favorites
Brown - she really liked this one but fears she'll be cut due to a personal connection
Black - she was really offended by a few questions here, and didn't like them much as a result
White - one of her favorites from pre-recruitment, but they didn't make a huge impression today

She doesn't rank until tomorrow evening, but so far she's planning to rank them (in no particular order except for the bottom five):

1. Red
1. Yellow
1. Gray
1. Purple
1. Gold
1. Silver
1. Pink
1. Green
1. Turquoise
1. Blue
1. Brown
1. White
2. Tan
3. Lavender
4. Magenta
5. Black
6. Orange

She's really hoping for invites from purple, pink, red, blue, and brown the most.

here's a link to an article in the Miami Univ. student news paper about the Jewish local - "Sigma" - from the fall.

good luck to your sister .. hope she finds her home!!

Aphigal 01-05-2007 12:57 PM

Sigma was a local group founded to bring AEPhi back to campus. They closed in 2003? (not sure about that one)

I am not sure when AEphi will be coming back either in the Spring or the Fall.

I didn't know Sigma was participating in Open House.

Thanks for this - very interesting that they sprang from AEPhi, who closed in 2004. They didn't take any new members in 2003 and 2004, so I thought they had all graduated by now.

Anyway, not much chance that my sister will end up there, as we're Catholic. :)

From the Alpha Epsilon Phi New Colonies!! thread.

AEPhi Colonizes on Three Campuses this Spring

National Council is pleased to announce that Alpha Epsilon Phi will be colonizing on three campuses this spring. We will be returning to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and to the University of Connecticut in January. Later on in the semester, a new group will begin at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Watch for more stories on our website or in Columns.

ADqtPiMel 01-06-2007 02:03 AM

Ok, just talked to my sister - she was only dropped by three, which is pretty great for Miami.

She will be returning tomorrow and Sunday to:
Purple
Pink
Red
Brown
Gray
Gold
Silver
Green
White
Tan
Lavender
Magenta

She will not be returning to:
Alpha Phi
Alpha Gamma Delta
Phi Mu
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta

Lots of houses to visit, and may she have a wonderful time at each!

Yay for little sister!

AGDLynn 01-06-2007 08:54 AM

Side note..I didn't even know we had a chapter at Miami, lol.

Aphigal 01-06-2007 08:56 AM

Well I am sad she's not going back to Alpha Phi....but to be released from only 3 and getting as a pnm to release an additional 2 is pretty darn amazing in this recruitment. With 17 chapters...I know that the releases are pretty heavy after open house (or at least I know Alpha Phi had to release 40%+ of the girls they saw)

I talked to our educational leadership consultant late last night...Alpha Phi is doing amazing....they had phi-nominal returns!!!

I know - here I was thinking that I had a pretty good rush back in the day at Miami, but my sister is definitely putting me to shame. She was even really disappointed with getting dropped by three because her roommate and two friends didn't get cut at all. I had to explain that that's definitely unusual!

carnation 01-06-2007 11:12 AM

I've heard a lot of girls getting upset at SEC schools when they get cut from, like, half the groups- and lots of other girls would kill for results that good. These days, you can be thrilled if you end up going to 2-3 prefs you like there and pledging a group you like.

The 2006 stories of 3 girls we know:
1 went through a very harrowing rush at Auburn and finally ended up Zeta.
1 went through a delightful rush at Ga Tech, never got cut, and went Zeta.
1 didn't go through formal rush at Shorter, got a call from a ZTA friend-and is now a Zeta.

All within a few weeks of each other!

ADqtPiMel 01-06-2007 11:44 AM

Yea, Miami can be brutal - when I went through four years ago, I only got to cut four groups. And that was considered to be a good rush!

I can still remember some of the girls I know being brought nearly tears last year after they got cut (of course, they got over it quick, fast ,and in a hurry by the next round). Your sister must just be one of those perfect rushies. Good for her!

Hahaha...don't tell mu_agd that! That's her chapter!

Aphigal 01-06-2007 09:16 PM

Remind your sister - are her two freinds double legs? And at least one chapter she is a legacy of that chapter. I would say that chapters that had to make heavy cuts, cut her for risk.

Honestly, when I posted that I thought it was U of Miami, Fla until I looked at the IHQ site. I was preparing to raise them a notch in my perception, lol.

ADqtPiMel 01-08-2007 01:24 AM

Ok, first round is over and her opinions majorly changed on a few of them! She ranked them in this order:

1) Purple
1) Red
1) White
1) Gold
1) Brown
1) Gray
1) Silver
2) Pink
3) Tan
4) Lavender
5) Green
6) Magenta

She said Gray, Silver, and Pink were all virtually interchangeable today - she ended up putting Pink in the drop list because all of the girls she really loved are graduating seniors. She almost hopes that she gets dropped by one so she can visit Pink again. She was also pleasantly surprised by Tan today. Invites come back Wednesday afternoon.

Aphigal 01-08-2007 02:05 PM

Yeah!! I can't wait to hear on Wed...that is such torture.

I heard Miami may be doing away with skits next year...boo!

Yeah, I'm sure it's even worse when you are the PNM. Good luck to your sister!

reveuse 01-09-2007 05:00 AM

This is really interesting to see. I can't wait to find out!!

ADqtPiMel 01-09-2007 08:04 AM

For clarification: I graduated from Miami not too long ago, so yes, my sister is rushing my own chapter. We are really close, but we have very different personalities. Although I obviously want her to like my chapter (which she does), I wouldn't be disappointed if she chose to join a different one. With 17 chapters, there is a good fit for any type of girl. I want her to find the best fit for her, and not just join mine because she loves my friends.

That being said, second round is next Friday and Saturday, pref is Sunday and Bid Day is Monday. I'll be in Ohio that weekend and most likely without computer access, so don't fret if I don't post. I'll give the whole rundown as soon as I'm back!

ADqtPiMel 01-10-2007 10:53 PM

Update!

She was dropped by two this time, and she was very relieved because she decided during the beginning of this week that she actually really wanted to go back to pink, which she put at number one on her drop list.

She will be returning to the following chapters on Friday and Saturday:
Purple
Red
White
Gray
Silver
Pink
Tan

She will not be returning to:
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Kappa Delta
Pi Beta Phi
Delta Delta Delta
Alpha Omicron Pi
