What GLO is the most known?
Which Org do you guys think is the most known across the United States or even the world? My vote would have to go to the BGLO Omega Psi Phi, almost everyone has heard of Que-dogs before. What about everybody else?
|
Hands down, the most known GLO (note it makes no distinction as to specific type) is Phi Beta Kappa.
|
My vote would go to Sigma Chi, due to the "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" catchphrase. Other orgs might be the fictitious Tri-Lambdas from the "Revenge of the Nerds" movies or of course the "Delta House" from the movie Animal House (I don't think the average person would remember their full name of Delta Tau Chi, though).
Delta Delta Delta is probably pretty well known also, if only for that unfortunate SNL skit. In short, if a GLO made it onto TV, people will have heard of it. eta: Rain Man, good call with the Phi Beta Kappa too. I didn't think of that!! :D |
Definitely Phi Beta Kappa!
In literature, "Kappa" is so often used, but not always for KKG, so it's a close second, IMHO. |
Most known??
To my understanding, Phi Beta Kappa is the most known. But to my own belief, ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY INCORPORATED, is the most celebrated, though I have friends who are TKEs, SAEs, and Sig Chi's. Either way, its all good in the fraternalhood.

I'll go with the Q-Dogs, because so many professional athletes have the brand on their upper arms. People see it every Saturday, Sunday.
|
I remember the "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" on Who's The Boss!
I think a lot of times people come across them, but have no idea what the letters or symbols mean. |
I think this is a question that can not be answered. Of course I am going to say Beta Theta Pi because we are one of the largest fraternities nationally and world wide. Then I would also say Sigma Chi because they are huge nationally and almost all of their chapters are composed of gentlemen and good people who are respected by their peers at their respected campuses. I would then say any of the next largest chapters nationally are the most recognized. Beta Theta Pi has the most fortune 500 CEO's. TKE has the most members. The above fraternities you have mentioned are unheard of to me which means almost the same to the rest of the Greek community at the University of Texas.
All opinions here are biased to geographical location. |
Alpha Phi Omega is very well known to those who were/are Boy Scouts, and there are quite a few of those.
Interestingly enough, the GLOs I really knew of before college were SDT, ZBT, Sammy, and Tau Delta Phi (my dad's fraternity). |
the only ones i had heard of before coming to school were AXO and TKE

I had never heard of Beta Theta Pi before Greekchat, so I can't agree. If you mean well-known outside the Greek system, I'd say Delta Delta Delta. Not real sure fraternity wise because I'd never heard of any besides Tri-lambda before joining. |

For sororities, I'd say Delta Delta Delta or Kappa Kappa Gamma.
|
I would say Phi Theta Kappa and Kappa Kappa Gamma :)
|
Only ones I knew of before coming to college were AEPi and AEPhi.
|
I think it also depends on where you live and how prominent the GLO is in that area. Before coming to college, I always heard about TriDelta, ZTA and DG. For the fraternities, I always heard about SigEp, KA (because my uncle was one at Furman and would always talk about his "glory days"), SAE and Pike.
|
I dont think you can get a true answer on a subject like this. Most of the GLO's being named, I never heard of before GC. It depends on where you from... In MY world, I would probably go with Omega Psi Phi (I am bias though :p ), but, if I had to pick one outside that, I would say Phi Beta Kappa.

Also, in Legally Blonde (the book, not the movie), the stepsister who did the shooting was named as being a KKG. Let's not forget Elle Woods' sorority: DN |
Phi Beta Kappa. Period.

I also think it's how you grew up. On the street where I grew up, literally everyone who went to college was in a GLO, and strangely, no two people were in the same one. I had heard of (going down the street) KKG, ATO, ASA, TriDelta, Delta Phi, Phi Kappa Theta, ChiO, DTD, Delta Sigma Phi, AXO, KAT, Sigma Chi, Chi Phi, SAE, Theta Chi, TriSigma, Beta Theta Pi, LXA, TKE, APhi, AXD, KA, (and one ADPi!). Pretty awesome, when you consider that there are only 14 houses on the street! But I agree, Phi Beta Kappa is THE best known, bar none. |
I'm leaning more towards Delta House just because of one of the greatest movies of all time. Of course I am more have more of a personal bias for the popularity of Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Kappa, but only did the brothers of Delta Tau Chi teach me the about true meaning of brotherhood...at the age of 12 one night. Delta Tau Chi is not the most important, but I didn't have a clue what Phi Beta Kappa was until I actually did research about greek life. That org never came up amongst my friends or anything.

People "across the country" overwhelmingly don't know and/or care about the names of specific GLOs. That's accounting for folks of various life experiences, races, and social classes.
But if I HAD to choose, I'd say whatever that fictional fraternity from Animal House or Tri Delt because of the "Delta Delta Delta--can I help ya, help ya help ya" jokes of the 90s. |
Okay, I keep reading Phi Beta Kappa.
<---going to Google because I don't know what Phi Beta Kappa is |
Here is a Phi Beta Kappa thread from ages ago

LOL... |
As has been said many times in above post, out side of each others little area, many were not known. Well untill GC for sure.
But, since then, I am much more familiar with many more than the few at my two colleges. One of the greateast sites has been produced and worked on very hard by one of our own GC Members: http://www.threebluestars.com/greek/ Check it out and see what is there!:D |
There's no easy answer. We are forgetting that by "most well known" we mean the general (read: non-Greek) population, not the biggest or most prestigious NIC, NPC, or D9 GLO. What we Greeks perceive as the "most well known" is going to depend on our region of the country, gender, race, religion, GLOs at our school, and Greek friends and family.

In terms of social fraternities, I would agree with Sigma Chi because of the song. This is yet another situation where what campus and/or area you are from will form your opinion since not all campuses have the same organizations. |

Oh--they are NOW an honor society. I hear their name often but didn't think "honor society" when I read the thread topic. Sure, PBK is well known but many people just throw the name around as a sign of prestige (i.e. "she's Phi Beta Kappa") without really knowing what the hell they're talking about. (Like the people who saw my Crimson and Cream symbols on my car after I crossed and asked if I was a "Que Dog" or a Kappa.) |

LOL... Just in Christmas someone asked me what Fraternity I was in... What I hate is when they say, "oh, you're one of those (do the wrong call)" i just say, um, no! |
The ones I knew before college were SigEp, TKE, Sigma Chi (because of "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi," as others have said), AKA, and Tri-Delta.
|
AlphaFrog
You are 150% correct. Yes, hell yeah, A PHI A is the most widespread, most celebrated and most service driven BGLO/Fraternity in the world. It's chilly at the top, but somebody's got to do it.
|
Well, I'd never heard of Phi Beta Kappa until today...lol
Before I went to college the only sorority I had heard of was ADPi (my grandma is a sister) and I had heard of Kappa Alpha (my great uncle). I'd have to agree with everyone else who pointed out that it's impossible to know what GLO is most widely known...Sigma Chi or Tri Delt might be a good bet though. |

I know that there was a blurb on Phi Beta Kappa in mine. |
I would say for Sororities Delta Delta Delta...mostly from the SNL clip...and for me, growing up in the south, Tri-Delta was always a dream for many little girls...
|
Phi Beta Kappa is my non-greek mother's vote.
