Oprah Defends Academy for Girls: Tonight CNN

"Your Money or Your Life" and "The Big Give"

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/1....ap/index.html

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Oprah Winfrey is expanding her media reach into reality television.

Her production company is working on two prime-time series for ABC, tentatively titled "Oprah Winfrey's The Big Give" and "Your Money or Your Life," ABC and Harpo Productions announced Friday.

The deal, which marks Winfrey's entrance into series TV, comes about three months after Harpo formed a new television development group for alternative shows, Tim Bennett, the company's president, said in a statement.

"The Big Give" provides money and other resources to 10 people and challenges them to help others in a way that tests the players' ingenuity and passion, according to the companies. The winner gets to realize their "wildest" dream.

"Your Money or Your Life," which is in development, features families who are confronted by a crisis and must change or risk being "consumed by disaster," according to the joint ABC-Harpo release.

I guess I have to see this concept but from the sound of it...I'm thinking its a no.

What are your thoughts about O opening a school in South Africa? Many feel that 'charity begins at home'; is that charity appreciated at home?

Honeykiss1974 01-03-2007 04:05 PM

I'm glad to see that is doing what she can in Africa because quiet frankly, the "world" doesn't give two shakes about what happens there. They need a powerful (both publically and financially) voice to speak for them and to show the world that Africa is more than just an AIDS epdemic and starvation - it is filed with hope and people who looking forward to a bright future.

Honestly, Oprah does things here in the US. I don't think what she is doing in Africa is going to cause a disadvantage to anyone here at all.

Heck, no the charity is not appreciated here at home.

Good for her and GREAT for the girls in South Africa. Girl Power!! lol

As a public school teacher I appreciate the fact that she built a school for children who will come to school to learn. I feel like a work in a detention center, daycare, or babysitter. :( Besides its her money.

Ok, like who are you? You have 9 posts and have YET to introduce yourself in the proper thread. Please grace us with your info.

Anyway, Oprah is truly a spectacular person and I wish that I may one day make a fraction of the contributions that she makes. I watch her special "Oprah in South Africa" everytime that it comes on and it continues to have a profound effect on me.

mccoyred 01-04-2007 10:58 AM

I think the what she and others are doing in Africa is great, phenomenal, sorely needed! However, it seems like MOST of what we hear about is in the country of SOUTH Africa. What about the other parts of the beleaguered continent?

AKA2D '91 01-17-2007 05:12 PM

Watch ABC on 2.26.07 for her Primetime special about this project.

Oprah wants parents to view this with their children and teachers to get their student's to watch this special.

This is what I'm thinking.
Why is it only 10:18 and I'm already crying?????

AKA2D '91 02-26-2007 11:23 PM

That's what I'm saying!!!!!

Like Kleenex says, "Let it Flow."

I guess I'm shedding tears because I WISH our kids, here in the USA would have this passion and thirst for the RIGHT kind of knowledge. After watching this, I have to go to work tomorrow to deal with reality. :(

I've gone through a box already (still on an emotional high from last night). It's seeing things like this that really makes one put things into perspective.

MzJ25 02-27-2007 12:36 AM

These girls are so inspiring. I'm amazed at how greatful they were to be going to this school. It makes me put everything in perspective.

nonchalant 02-27-2007 01:26 AM

I watched it, and it was great. You never realize what people go through until it's put in your face. Those children have gone through so much at such a young age. They seem practically grown. I'm glad Oprah opened up the school there to give the girls an opportunity to grow and live in a better environment. They have been exposed to so much that they are not used to. It can only get better. I felt especially sorry for the girl that stayed in the bad neighborhood. She was so scared of being a victim of rape or abuse. Also, a lot of those kids were w/o parents due to different reasons. The story about the father who shot the mom and then himself got to me. Then the girl said she wasn't mad about what happened, for God has a reason for everything. That was too touching. Their mentalities amazed me. Too much to talk about.

If you missed it, please watch Saturday, March 3rd @ 8 pm ET.

StarFish106 02-27-2007 10:23 AM

i wanna watch it again!!

I watched the whole thing in tears it was truly inspiring...From the 2 sisters Megan and Sade, for the girl who got up @ 4 am to catch the bus to school it was uplifting to see these bright beautiful African children want to achieve...:D

Then I get to watch on the news here how 2 students ambushed a teacher after school because the teacher took his iPod. The man has 2 broken vertebrae in his neck and is lucky to even be alive. the teacher is still concerned about the students (who are expelled). But why does it even have to go to that level? Why?

But there is a discussion going on to extend the school day.

NiaX 02-27-2007 11:31 AM

That was a beautiful school, and show, those girls were very appreaciative of the opportunity... They were selling themselves (humbly)... to show that they were worth of the chance. I can't wait to see progress on the young ladies.

That's what I'm talking about. Our (America) priorities and value for education is all out of whack!! I'm happy for them. I think they will do great things for their country and girls who will follow in their footsteps.

10PM ET, O defends her school, on Anderson Cooper 360

SummerChild 03-28-2007 06:02 PM

Really, I feel like she doesn't even need to do this. However, I do understand her need to have her thoughts heard.

I know I'm posting a little late on this one...But I am very excited about what she is doing. I think that someone should have done this a very long time ago. People always want to find the negative when people try to help others. Unfortunately I have to agree with whoever said that American kids (in general) are more concerned about material things and are not focused on education. So why should she spend her money on them? We also have a lot more opportunities here in America when it comes to getting financial aid to pay for schools that I don't think they have there, or they may not have access to. I applaud everything she has done to make those girls feel like true human beings...Heck...I wish I could go to the school! Did you see those lounge areas?

I cried throughout the whole show. Those girls have the most beautful smiles I have ever seen. It also showed me that I need to smile IN SPITE OF...They have gone through so much, but can still smile and have aspirations. Unbelievable.

I agree with you. If I was Oprah, I would not defend a thing. Her work in Africa should be applauded and encouraged - not criticized.

Go Oprah!

Really, as much as her foundation has done for people in this country, and as much as she personally has done for people in this country, I can't believe folks have the nerve to criticize.

anyone catching "keep the faith" right now...they are discussing "where charity should begin, at home or abroad" with main reference to Oprah's charity work in Africa, some very interesting points have been brought up.
