I'm wearing my new balances today :). Headed to Mexico this Friday to hopefully pick up some baby seal boots. Those are some old looking redwings! Have you seen the pledges boots this semester? They're pretty nice looking.

Edit** Those are the new Redwings. and those Wallabees, I hope nobody wears those.

Elephant Walk 12-15-2006 12:26 AM

I would hope the guy was referring to Sperry's, not Crocs. Crocs are absolutely terrible. My pair of Sperry's have lasted forever.

edit: he's clearly a northerner working his way into a southern fraternity. Asking what Sperry's are? From South Carolina? Are you serious? Besides that asking which houses haze less.

edit again:

I really don't like calling out ladies, no offense hun, but you live in Florida. Not the south.

I personally hate wallabees......just know that alot of fraternity members elsewhere wear them. The Redwings are 1178s......they don't make them anymore......but I still have my pair.

Which pledge boots are you talking about? My boots I got when I was a pledge were the custom made cowboy boots that werer burnt orangish in color with the longhorn cut out on the back.

shinerbock 12-15-2006 01:03 AM

I wear Georgia boots. Wallabee's are terrible. I also like the gold cup sperrys, although they really don't hold up well. Still, probably worth the money.

EE-BO 12-15-2006 01:17 AM

In my day it was pretty much Red Wings- but also the loafer options or a good pair of dress boots as mentioned above for certain occasions. We never wore sandals, but times change I guess.

Macallan, when did they stop selling those Red Wings? I got a new pair about a year ago since the ones I had through high school and college are almost unwearable now (nails coming out or poking through sole), but I didn't know they stopped making them. Those things last forever.

I'm not sure......I just haven't been able to find the 1178s anywhere....and someone else also told me they weren't making them anymore. I've had them re-soled more than I can remember.

Texas Beta 12-15-2006 03:00 AM

I wasn't able to buy those Redwings when I was a pledge, but our pledges this semester all bought a pair just like those. I'm not sure what the exact type is, but they look near the same.

And those sound like pricey pledge boots :P I have nails and all sorts in mine. They're still great work boots though.

Well... I just bought these. I think they are cute, and were super cheap. *LOL*

I'm usually a flip flop girl, since I live on the beach, but these will be cute with jeans and a poplin shirt or pretty blouse.

Texas Beta 12-15-2006 11:45 PM

Ok, I missed the Mexico trip today due to finals.

I really want a new pair of boots. I don't want to spend more than $600, which isn't really much for a nice pair of boots. A store here in Austin sells "long horn boots" is what they call them, they're ostrich, burnt orange on the bottom, white on top with an orange longhorn. I'm probably going to get these, the only reason I wouldn't is because after college, and football games, when am I ever going to wear them? Anyone reading this that goes to Texas football games has surely seen these boots before.

My reasoning for getting them is that I can always buy really nice dress boots, for half the price, through an organization I am in later next semester. Would buying those boots be a waste?

EE-BO 12-16-2006 12:06 AM

You can wear them again when you are 80 years old and parking your black Cadillac with longhorns mounted on the hood in the Longhorn Foundation lot in front of the stadium.

Texas Beta 12-16-2006 12:40 AM

Hell yeah, have you seen the guy who owns the yellow rose's car? It's a 350z, burnt orange, burnt orange tint, and giant longhorns on the front. I guess because he owns a strip club he can be that tacky.

I guess you think the boots are a bad idea?

EE-BO 12-16-2006 01:27 AM

I dunno. Not something I would get for me- but I don't really like ostrich boots. Had a pair once and sold them on eBay after a while. The pair you are talking about is something I have seen advertised in Texas Monthly (Capitol Saddlery, right?) before- and they are pretty sharp.

If you have the money handy- go for it. You know you are going to come to games for the rest of your life like any real Longhorn- so you can use them.

Texas Beta 12-16-2006 01:58 AM

I agree, I plan on going to football games until I am physically unable to. I also plan on going downtown a lot more. I think I'll go get fitted for them tomorrow. I can always get my dress boots next semester. If anything else, I can pass these boots down to my son (hopefully I have one and he wears the same shoe size as I do). I'm not too worried about what school he'll go to :)

Maybe passing footware down is a little gross. :P

I would say passing down like tennis shoes are gross, but boots are okay. My dad passed down a pair of boots to me.

CarolinaCutie 12-16-2006 12:41 PM

Someone starts a thread about shoes and you all come running, huh?

GatorsWearJorts 12-16-2006 01:20 PM

Crocs are great

Crocs are great if you own a boat like me

What does everybody think of these guys? I'm not the biggest fan of the square toe, but I think they look decent and cost half the price of the other boots I was looking at.

You're talking about deck shoes/boat shoes/Sperry's.

Elephant Walk 12-17-2006 07:28 PM

so did they completely discontinue 991's?

Denise_DPhiE 12-18-2006 03:34 PM

Um...what does football fames and boots have to do with each other??

Clearly, I am not in the know!

Elephant Walk 12-18-2006 08:20 PM

I believe they were discussing boots which had Longhorns symbols on it.

LOVEinZTA 12-18-2006 11:30 PM

come down to a UT football game and you'll understand:D

They're really no worse than half of the shoes posted in that "let's talk about cute shoes" thread.

Yes but I don't participate in that thread. Myself, I have a soft spot for a good pair of sneakers/running shoes. Not the grandpa NB 991s. I'm currently wearing a pair of Saucony's that I love.
*note: I love New Balance. Just not grandpa New Balance.

Lil' Hannah 12-19-2006 02:00 PM

They actually look quite normal with pants, but whatever.

Have you ever gone to the factory store in Brighton? I love that place!

ZING!

I'm much more of a handbag snob than a shoe snob, but holy hell there are some fugly-ass shoes on GC these days. I just took a look at the "cute shoes" thread, and I'm horrified.

It's great! I'll spend like $100 and walk out with three pairs of sneakers and a bunch of workout clothes!

Every time we go back to visit the relatives, the NB outlet is a must-do pilgrimage. Both GEN Alum and the D are serious runners and S is on the same path in the not-so-distant future.

NB used to have a program where you could turn in an old pair of sneakers (any brand) and get an additional 10% off.

My absolute favorite store in Boston is the New England Book Fair on the Newton/Needham line. Talk about deals and steals....:)

They usually do that around the holidays every year, last year it was 20% off I believe. I haven't seen anything about it yet this year, although I would be surprised if they weren't doing it.
