Stomp The Yard!

Are you going to see it??

ladyb08 12-10-2006 01:33 PM

It sounds interesting enough, I think I'll give it a shot.

Intense1920 12-10-2006 06:58 PM

No, I won't be seeing it.

LoisLane 12-13-2006 10:08 PM

What's interesting is the boycott controversy between the Alphas and the films producers. I wanna see it just to see what the fuss is about!

Trademark infringement. That's what the fuss is about. This lawsuit as well as my sorority's suit against BSP is important for all of us, as they could set a precedent for keeping folx from wantonly using our orgs for their own benefit.

jojapeach 12-14-2006 12:10 PM

^^^ Exactly why I won't be seeing the movie. To my knowledge, my sorority hasn't taken an official stance with the Alphas, but I want to support my fellow Greeks in protecting their trademarks and their organization. If someone can come along and use Alpha's symbols all willy nilly despite documentation that demands for a cease and desist, who says it won't happen to my beloved Sigma or any other D9 org?

Nope, I shan't be financially supporting it despite the fact that my niece's elementary step team was chosen to be in the film. I'm sure it'll make it to HBO or Cinemax.

quteepie22 12-15-2006 12:13 AM

From looking at the trailer, the movie looks like a college version of You Got Served. If so, I don't think I'll be going to see it either.
And, copyright infringement could happen to anyone of the D9 orgs. If they could do it to the Alphas, they could do to Sigma. Another reason for me not to see it!!!

ZetaLawyer 12-22-2006 10:25 AM

I won't be paying money to see it. Now if it comes on TV, then sure. But they'll probably make plenty of $$ b/c Chris Brown is in it - You Got Served in College.

jojapeach 12-22-2006 11:06 AM

LOL @ college version of You Got Served. I didn't see that movie either.

radiantblu2005 12-22-2006 11:50 AM

I didnt know anything about the lawsuits and i havent seen the trailer yet. Wow...things that ppl do now a days.

BlueNYC2 12-24-2006 11:21 PM

it looks like a pile of some hot bullshit. since when have you heard of orgs recruiting someone so they can win a stepshow??? smh...

Jazzynupe4 12-25-2006 05:52 PM

stomp the yard Lawsuit

Just to put it out there, My Partner and I are filing a Lawsuit against the producers of Stomp the yard. Why, Because it is our story that they stole. We wrote a very positive Script eight years ago, and Studios wanted us to change eveything about the Greeks. Some of the lines are even ours in the trailer. Again, I am sure the film is going to be a very good film .But we do not go out and recruit people to pledge our organizations in order to win step shows. if you want to see a good film check out "My Brothers Keeper" starring Sinbad, Vanessa Bell- Callaweay (AKA) and Shadrack Anderson. The film was written By Danielle Porter S G Rho and produced By Jeff Taylor and Deon Reid (KAY)

jojapeach 12-27-2006 01:54 AM

OK, I saw on a NPHC listserv that there was a favorable resolution between Alpha Phi Alpha and Sony including a large donation to the MLK Memoral Fund. I'm glad a positive precedent was set for our organizations.

I still shan't see that wackness. In my years of attending step shows, I've never seen two step teams face each other on the same stage at the same time. I'm mad that some of the creative forces behind this movie are Greek, but they still managed to put together this gobbledygook that veers that far left of what happens in step shows. I've also never seen that many men step at one time.

I hope none of y'all support this film. There have to be other black films to support in 2007 besides this mess. My money will not send an okay that people want to see completely fabricated Greek Life. *insert nasty names here*

@ Jazzynupe4: Good luck with the lawsuit. I hope it works in your favor if what you alleged is true.

So are Alphas pictured in the movie or what? I saw the trailer and didnt think I saw any real letters

I saw real letters.

7thSonofOsiris 12-27-2006 07:01 PM

Seeing Real Letters

Originally, when I saw the first few trailers or whatever, I did see our letters in that jokah, however, some expeditious moves were made at our headquarters, and statements of infringement were thrown out there and those clips that showed our letters were taken out. Again, I think that this film is whack when it comes to the subject matter. I don't think that there should be a movie made about stepping, because of the sacred nature of what it means to step. Hollywood doesn't have to de-mystify every thang, shit. Some things need to remain private and sacred, not made into modes of entertainment and commercialized. Our pledge process is totally unique and unto us. Stepping is what comes as an end result of that journey.

Perfect 10 12-28-2006 09:37 AM

Agreed!

ladyb08 12-31-2006 03:26 PM

Hmm...

Now that I think about it, I don't think I will be seeing it. I originally thought it was a documentary styled film, but after really seeing the trailers, I can say it doesn't look too appealing.
It'll be interesting to see how the lawsuit goes, though.

I had posted another thread about this. The movie looks great, i can't wait to see some of the dance sequences. They should look great on the big screen

Finer Woman10-A-91 01-02-2007 03:20 PM

hmm...

I would n't pay money at a theater to see this kind of movie because its just not my favorite genre. I will probably check it once it makes its way to dvd. I am a sucker for great showmanship, and from what I can see, thats what is most appealing about the flick.

On a serious note, film makers take artistic liscense everyday when it comes to story telling. From a series of correspondences I read from the filmmakers and APhiA leadership, its all pretty sad.

So the Alphas got a donation from Sony...
...guess it really was n't about the principal after all ...huh?

To the Kappa who is filing law suit- if the story really is yours...good luck with that...

jojapeach 01-03-2007 03:00 PM

I still can't see it.

I get mad everytime I see that trailer come on. Never in my life have I seen two step teams battling...at the same...on the same stage. I personally haven't see that many men step together at the same time. Just seeing that many men wearing red jackets stepping together on the yard irks the devil out of me. Maybe it's realistic for a coming out show, but I don't like this fantasy version of Greekdom.

Maybe there's some hidden nugget of wisdom that they couldn't put in the trailers because wisdom in a flick about Greek Life wouldn't translate to dollars.

Me too! I have to turn the channel or leave the room.

random6_1920 01-03-2007 04:50 PM

I 'm not interested in spending money to see the movie.

I love you for using the words "shan't" and "gobbledygook.":D

sexydove 01-03-2007 10:25 PM

Well I'll be seeing it. I might as well it almost reminds me of Drumline and that was a good movie. I understand the whole trademark infringement, but that makes me want to see it even more to understand what the whole issue is about. The thing I don't understand is that the creator or the producer of the movie is an Alpha. I thought the movie may promote a positive image for all Greeks.

f8nacn 01-03-2007 10:39 PM

Wow...after reading the comments int his thread...I'm not sure if I will spend money to see it...but wait until Netflix brings it out. It does look appealing to the eye though.

you're joking right??? i really hope ur joking. cuz this looks like a hot pile of stankin gobbage!!! the minute i saw the trailer a few months ago, i was like ...hell no!!!

i wont even waste my bandwidth & time downloadin this rubbish...

sexydove 01-06-2007 09:08 PM

Well everyone doesn't have same style in movie's. I for one will see it because it looks interesting to me. If after watching the movie I'm not satisfied then it would be my problem and my money wasted....no one else is paying for my movie ticket but me. (Please don't think I am trying to be rude because I'm not). I just see a lot of people ridiculing the ones who are choosing to see it. That's their opinion if they want to see it.
The movie may catch a lot of eyes mainly because of the dance sequences....keep in mind it may be a lot of dance fanatics on GC.

P.S. I've never seen Titanic and that was by choice because it seemed like a stupid movie to me, but I never questioned other people that wanted to see it.

I'm with you, i think the step should look really cool on the big screen.

Intense1920 01-08-2007 08:16 PM

If you want to see it then see it. If you don't, don't. No need to defend your decisions.

ladygreek 01-09-2007 02:43 AM

Check this out, especially the second one of the Sigmas from Kansas City.
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/s...akes/index.php

The last one I can't figure out if they are dudes or chicks or a combination. I think I heard some deep voices among higher voices, but the video is too small to really see.

I couldn't hear the last group at all. I really like the Sigmas. Was the first group Alphas too? They looked really young.

I'm just all late. Thanks for the admiration of the vocab. :D

I'm sticking by my choice, and I hope that those who spend their money enjoy it. As for moi, I'm still urging my friends and family to not see that movie in the theaters.

The chairs thing blew me away. I am sure others have seen it before, but it was my first time.

Yeah, I think the first and third groups were Alphas. And you're right the first group looked like kids.

First Group: No idea, but they did look like Similac was their favorite drink. I don't wanna say Alpha b/c I swear I'm hearing "D Phi D" or "G Phi G", but I thought I heard "Ice Cold", too.

The Sigmas were NICE! I saw the Zetas do that chair step in Atlanta (took second place), but I liked how the Sigmas worked it.

The Alphas were pretty cool. Nice formations and movement.

Last group: Was it a mixed HS team? (Don't take that guess as an insult....) I thought there 2 boys, maybe 3.

alphamale1906 01-09-2007 07:32 PM

Stomp The Yard...

As soon as the lawsuit was filed, I googled for the movie and found the trailer (as I had not heard of the movie or its production prior to the lawsuit filing). My fraternity letters could originally be seen in the early trailers. The letters originally seen on the jackets during the cafateria seen have since been removed in the current trailer.

very very cool, i'm getting into this

Granny 01-16-2007 04:55 PM

Saw the movie on Saturday and the dance scenes were great! Was it a classic? No - however I have seen worse.

SigmasDream 01-16-2007 07:20 PM

they had real letters when they went to heritage hall, and i was upset because they had AKA and DST but did not mention or show ZphiB or SGRho...
