Holiday Office Party/Social: Are You Attending?

Are you attending your jobs' holiday party/social this year?

A. Yes
B. No
C. Undecided
D. N/A

I wll not be attending my office holiday dinner. It's more for families to get together. Those of us that are single or not from here are made to feel like outcasts. Plus...if I'm going to be around them in a social setting, I'm going to need some alcohol.

This year was my first year attending only because it was held right after work in our building instead of at a facility on a Friday night where they encourage "party attire." It was a lot of fun. LOTS of alcohol including apple martinis. We had each room as a country with that country's cuisine. Lots of fun hanging out with drunk co-workers, LOL. I saw some people in a better light last week. Funny to see the Greeks wear leis in their org's colors too.

Great raffle prizes but I didn't win any. Someone won a $3000 cruise voucher.

everyone in my office has been talking about this like it is princess di's wedding or something (sorry couldnt think of a more recent example)! being that my last day is the 15th and the party is the 14th, i will be in there drinking up all the free top-shelf liquor my company has to offer.

This Saturday

I actually helped plan our company holiday party. Our theme is Game Show Mania so we're playing Jeapardy! and other games. I'm looking forward to it.

Quoted because it pretty accurately describes my stuation, except for the single part. I dont have kids, I have no desire to hear any hippie bands playing, and i dont like kids with no home training, of which there are MANY at this event.

At the best of times I need alchohol to interact socially with the people I work with.

There's a division-wide holiday party scheduled, but I'm not going to that. The support staff, however is planning a separate party for the 21st - I'm supplying the libations. The 22nd is my compressed day off. :p :p

Fee's translation: "I'm gon have errrrrbody up in there on tilt!" :D

I've been in my new office about 2 months and this is a pretty sedate crew, so I don't expect anything too wild at next weeks' party. I do have to find something ($20) for the office gift exchange. <---good ideas appreciated.

I'm going. This year, my department will be doing to a dinner/live show at a music theater, so it should be interesting. I will also be mooching off of another department's Christmas party (I work with them) where we will be going to dinner and a movie (this movie theater is set up like a restaurant so it literally is - dinner and a movie).

My suggestions are:
A bottle of wine (you wouldn't believe how people act over trying to get this)
A Christmas CD
A cookie basket
A nice insulated mug (for hot or cold drinks)

Hope this helps

I'm not going. Supposedly, the organizers didn't realize that it was time again. So, they sent out an email on Monday saying that the party is next week Thursday and for people to pay for their tickets by tomorrow. I've never been to a DAYTIME office party (it starts at 11:30 AM) or an office party where I had to pay. I'd rather spend my money going out to dinner with friends.

jojapeach 12-08-2006 12:07 AM

We're having a holiday meal at a great Italian restaurant. And my small company is paying! Oh...I'll be there! Best part: it's in the middle of a Friday afternoon! Beautiful! Drinking: I 'on know yet.

I never attended the holiday party for another company that employed me for nearly 3 years. I loathed upper management, and I didn't want to get dressed up to act like I was holly and jolly with those people.

Still BLUTANG 12-08-2006 01:26 PM

this is the ONE THING i miss about my old job - partying. We held last year's on a ship, wonderful food and flowing bar.

My current job seems like we're having a potluck/pizza party type thing. I KNOW we won't have any drinks but juice and soda. Oh well. Free food so i won't complain.

That sucks! But enjoy the free food, I guess.

Nope, I don't much care for many of my coworkers and I would rather spend my time with persons I enjoy... :p

unspokenone25 12-08-2006 02:57 PM

My firm already had the "unofficial" Christmas party last Friday. The official Christmas party/luncheon takes place next week.

The "unofficial" party was great! Each year they have it a bar and associates, partners, and firm staff perform skits. I performed Santa Baby and Blues Brothers. Yeah, they go all out! It's amazing what people will do when they have some licca in em!

Steeltrap 12-08-2006 03:13 PM

We don't have our party until after the holidays (January) and I'm undecided.

our section of the psych department is small enough that you kinda need to go or else everybody will definitely notice and wonder if you're dying or something.

My department has two parties. The "official" one is next week sometime, and the "unofficial" one that's staff only is later in the week...at the Cheesecake Factory :D AWAY from the job. I'll be at both!

Do we work at the same place? :D

I'm not attending. This is very different for our holiday social. From what I've heard, most folks are NOT attending. I wouldn't be surprised if its canceled because of low numbers. We are accustomed to a blowout with alcohol, food, and a DJ. Our school is known for partying hard. This is totally out of our element, so I am SURE there will be an unofficial party planned before we get out on the 21st. :o

AKA_blackbarbie 12-09-2006 06:56 PM

All my job does is drink they are so excited about this party and I know the outcome. a bunch of drunk people. Should be fun though its my first one. I will tell you all about it later.
Free food ,free drinks, dj and a band so we will see.

SummerChild 12-09-2006 09:13 PM

I am going. My firm goes all out with the menu and location. We're at a country club nearby. We choose from Filet Mignon and Salmon, Filet Mignon and Chicken Or Vegetarian. Unfortunately, I'm trying to become a vegetarian so I will have to sit there and watch everyone else eat my favorite cut of beef while I have the vegetarian plate!

Oh well.

MsDJ80 12-10-2006 12:28 PM

We had our Dept Party last night and had a great time..no alcohol but I definitely see some of my coworkers a little differently...

the schoolwide party is in two weeks and is mandatory, not really looking forward to it

AKA2D '91 12-10-2006 09:51 PM

I attended my college alumni social last night. It was a mellow event. We didn't get out of hand. Someone did bring Long Island Iced Tea. I hadn't had that since I was in college. :o It was a great gathering. We had class members from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s present. I enjoy hearing about the good ole days. :D

blueGBI 12-10-2006 10:17 PM

I'm going to my first office holiday party next week. It's supposed to be informal but yeah, I'm nervous.

Soror, the same thing about the people at my job:

Someone passes the bar exam - let's go to the bar.
Someone's leaving for another job - let's go to the bar.
New interns coming in - let's go to the bar.

Notice the pattern here? LOL. :p :D

...SC, why don't you try to become a vegetarian after the party? I mean, no sense in letting a good, "free" steak just go past you all like that, right? :)

camii 12-11-2006 11:56 AM

I attended the holiday party for the campus that I work on. It was very festive. They had a calypso band, horderves and great gifts that they raffled off.

delph998 12-11-2006 12:46 PM

Our holiday party was Saturday. A lot of people were toasted by the time I left, and that was 9:15p. I couldn't get down like that.

Intense1920 12-11-2006 06:37 PM

The cut off for paying for the party was this past Friday. I guess they haven't gotten enough people cause hey sent out an email today saying the deadline had been extended. LOL. Only my group leader is going and she's not very thrilled.

firecracker08 12-14-2006 08:54 AM

I'll be going to mine. It's a small Catholic school where I work and we have quite a nice spread.

Luckie1922 12-14-2006 07:55 PM

Last year previous employer CHRW, had a Christmas party for our department only, the managers decided to put together a short music video of the people in our pod, the department is predominately white 90%.
The background music they played for the video was 50Cent off in the club the unedited version, the version were he say the N word clearly several times...
Don’t get me wrong I likes me some fifty, but at a Christmas party, it was totally inappropriate…. I was done… I don’t do office parties
